QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

It definitely was worse on Saturday, but I'm really interested in what Tulsa did defensively and to hear from smarter people what they did and if it make sense that Stroud would struggle more. He missed throws, but they also drop 8 consistently and I'm wondering if this was closer to the NW game last year when he got impatient and out of sync due to easier throws not always being there.

Everything I've read and heard says that he can't pull the ball in those situations. They aren't actual reads. I think they need to be, at least a few, and he needs to take some easy yards if he can on scrambles.

He's 19. Not surprised, and he's obviously feeling pressure and frustrated with misses he's had. I don't think it's that abnormal for a young QB. He just needs to outgrow it.

1. You are correct. The 3-3-5 is a very difficult defense to play against, if ran properly. They consistently drop 8 into coverage to muddy the passing windows. Real hard for a young QB.

2. You are correct. None of those are read options. It sucks that a lot of fans can’t tell the difference and then rag on the QB for not making a choice that wasn’t supposed to be made in the first place.

3. Agree. I’m not sure what people expected from him. There’s been moments from each of our QB’s since Meyer/Day have been here that they’ve been rattled and played poorly. It’s expected. He just needs to grow from it.

I think the issue is if McCord plays great, then you have a real QB competition that the media is going to run wild with. I hope he gets a shot, he plays with a gambler mentality IMO. We have the WR to gamble though. Stroud has a ton of potential, nerves are a huge piece of every game for him thus far. Throwing high seems to be a issue, I dont know if that is nerves or poor foot work. We need to get these QBs some reps though and if we cant do it against Akron or Tulsa, not sure its going to happen this year.

Oh I don't blame him... I wouldn't be able to function under all that pressure especially at his age. I just don't recall seeing this out of a previous QB. I wonder if that small amount of doubt is what I notice? Who knows.

I wonder if it's nerves/technique or sore shoulder that prevents him from completely following through on his throws.

CJ admitted that he's not 100%. I believe that Day would love to sit CJ (or maybe only play him one quarter) against Akron. But...What happens if McCord starts and looks much better running the offense? Doesn't sail passes. Throws on time. Pulls the ball on read options and keeps the defense honest. Offense looks great. Sure it's against Akron. But everyone in Columbus and all of Buckeye Nation will get really vocal. What would Day do? I'm sure he wants CJ to leave no doubt that he made the right choice. But I'm not sure he's done that.

Hey, so be it. Nobody on the team should be guaranteed a starting position. Competition makes everyone better. We want the best guy (i.e. whoever is able to put Ohio State in the best position to win) starting at QB.

In all fairness to Stroud, besides only starting his 3rd game he was placed in difficult situations on a number of occasions. He had some dropped balls (be nice), a bad snap, and if memory serves me right there were five false start penalties and one facemask penalty. Catch the passes and avoid the OL penalties and it could have been a much different outcome. Yes, there is much room for improvement on Stroud's part but throw in a injured shoulder and I think we have cause for optimism.

I think that Stroud will be a great QB, however injury to the throwing arm is a concern. My untrained eye hasnt seen much improvement week over week. I would have hoped to see a much more efficient Stroud last week. Through three weeks we have seen 59.1% vs Minn, 64.8% vs ORE, and 60% vs TLSA. One Interception each week and multiple misses. Yes the WRs didnt help him out this week with the drops. However the misses to Olave and forcing it to Ruck really have me wanting to see the other guys. Obviously Day knows a thing or two about QB play, the potential of everyone on the team has me eager to be the judge though haha.

Agreed! I remember a HC in Alabama who benched his starting QB in the National Championship for a true frosh... Sometimes you have to let the players know that this is big time now, and your feelings need to be checked at the locker room door

A guy who ended up a Heisman candidate at Oklahoma at that. Saban will give up all the other trophies for the natty. The way it should be

It’s not a read option if he’s not reading anyone and doesn’t have the option to keep it.
So why keep running the look if the execution isnt possible? Pretty sure thats what most people are asking.

Considering, Stroud had 0 passes going into this season for his career but has an 80yd TD on an option keep. Something else is happening

I’m not sure what play he was referencing, but that’s kind of just how you hand off out of the shotgun, or even the pistol. Ideally, the QB would still provide a run fake or pass fake after the handoff - both of which Stroud can improve on. And yes, he’s proven capable of running the read option in mop up duty. It would help balance out some numbers. Unfortunately, out of designed read option, he’s had opportunities to scramble and hasn’t taken them. Maybe they don’t want to run him until the Big Ten schedule? Maybe they didn’t think they’d have to?
