Walk-On?s Choice: JMU or Ohio State Posted 2007-04-19
By Mike Barber
HARRISONBURG ? On the field, James Madison?s football team would have no realistic chance against Ohio State. But in a recruiting battle, the Dukes are ? apparently ? hanging tough, albeit for a walk-on.

Quarterback Joe Bauserman, who spent the past three years in the Pittsburgh Pirates? minor- league system, is planning to play college football this fall at either Ohio State or JMU, his father said Wednesday.

Enrolling at OSU this summer per today's Tallahassee Democrat

Former Trojan changes careers
Former Lincoln pitcher Joe Bauserman not only switched careers but moved on to a different sport.

The 6-foot-2 right-hander, selected in the fourth round of the draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2004, gave up professional ball to join the Ohio State football program this summer.

Bauserman originally gave up a scholarship with the Buckeyes as a quarterback. The Virginia native made waves as a Trojan with his 90-plus-mph fastball and later spent time in the Pirates organization at Hickory in the South Atlantic League.

Don't want to be too early on this one, but if Joe hops on board and proves a quality QB...I bet a million someone transfers out by the beginning of '08.

Regardless...welcome aboard officially to Joe. Hope he has a great career as an Ohio State Buckeye.

Bauserman in town
Quarterback hopeful Joe Bauserman is living in Columbus and will attend the spring game Saturday, his mother, Joy Bauserman, said yesterday.

Joy said Joe was not 100 percent sure he would attend OSU, where coaches have said he could walk on in the fall. He has applied for admission for summer quarter but also has been accepted at James Madison University.

James Madison is a Division I-AA school in Harrisonburg, Va., near the Bauserman's home in Palmyra, Va.

Bauserman orally committed to Ohio State out of Tallahassee, Fla., in 2003 but chose to play professional baseball instead.

A fourth member of the fall quarterback competition was sitting in the stands Saturday. Joe Bauserman, a 2004 OSU commitment who chose to play minor league baseball instead, is taking classes this summer and said Saturday he plans to enroll at Ohio State in the fall and walk on the football team.

"I committed here in '04 and I kind of want to see my commitment through," Bauserman said. "I don't want to turn back. It's a good fit overall. How could you not want to be out here?"

Scouting service rivals.com ranked Bauserman as the No. 22 pro-style quarterback in 2004, so this isn't Vince Young waiting in the wings. But another arm wouldn't hurt.
