I don't really know where to access NFL contracts, but isn't Troy a free agent at the end of the season? I hope he lands in a good situation if he is.

Even if Troy was to be a Free Agent he would be a restricted Free Agent. Thus allowing Baltimore first right of refusal and the ability to lock him down for cheap. (I don't know what his contract status is specifically but he hasn't been in the league long enough for him to be a UFA)

Also consider that due to the Collective Bargaining agreement the tenure length to be designated an Unrestricted Free Agent has been moved back 2 years. Instead of 4 years service it's now 6 years. This is a specific item in the current CBA that is supposed to motivate the players union when renegotiation time comes around. (Hello, its here)

What bugs me the most about this situation is people say "oh but what an arm Flacco has". They do realize Troy when he came out of college won the farthest throw contest (over 70+ yards I believe), arm strength is not a problem for Troy.
The simple response to those claims is - Jamarcus Russell has a big arm too.

yeah my point exactly... There's tons of guys who can throw the ball 60+ yards but not all of them have what it takes to lead a team to victory. No offense to Flacco but when things got tough at whatever school he was at before delaware he simply transfered. Troy on the other hand looked like he'd never get a shot to show what he could do, but he hung in there got his shot when Zwick got hurt and never looked back.

Yeah anyone remember Troy standing next to Jamarcus Russel during the OSU vs LSU game 2 years ago? Jamarcus this huge medalion hanging down and was wearing these designer clothing with these HUGE sunglasses. Troy? polo and jeans... Also the way they handlled themselves too with Troy being well spoken.

Not all OSU players are probably well spoken but Troy was as good as they came.

Flacco isn't getting benched because of a bad game against one of the two best defenses in the NFL.

He's actually looked pretty good this year.
Against Cincy:
22-31 186 yds 1 td 2 int
18-32 195 yds 0 td 2 int

His last 6 games were very weak, despite some weak opponents
20-25 175 yds 1 td 0 int ... 30-07 DEN
18-32 195 yds 0 td 2 int ... 07-17 CIN
13-18 155 yds 0 td 0 int ... 16-00 CLE
23-35 256 yds 0 td 1 int ... 15-17 IND
23-35 289 yds 1 td 0 int ... 20-17 PIT
15-36 137 yds 1 td 3 int ... 14-27 GB

Take away bad performances against the two best defenses in the NFL and it doesn't look all that bad to me on a team where he's not supposed to win games for them. And what were the weak opponents on that schedule, aside from Cleveland? Denver is a playoff team, Cinci has a top 3 defense this year, Cleveland sucks, Indy is undefeated, Pittsburgh is no slouch (not what they usually are, but still not bad), and GB has a great defense this year.

Only one weak opponent there.

Troy isn't going to start in Baltimore because Flacco isn't a bad QB. He's in his second year and has shown some very good signs. It would be insane to bench him. Sorry dudes. Troy is my favorite Buckeye ever, but he's not going to play in Baltimore - for good reason.

Flacco stunk the joint up on MNF - 25 passer rating? One would have to think Troy gets an opportunity with another showing like that from Flacco.
No, one wouldn't.

Better option than Anderson or Quinn...

I'm just tossing that out there.
Joe Montana in his prime would fail miserably in Cleveland right now. That would be a death sentence to Troy's career.

Yep.

I understand the sentiment, but come on folks. Troy will never be more than a backup in Baltimore. Rightfully so. Personally, I don't think he'll ever be more than that anywhere in the NFL. He has a slow delivery, is undersized and he hasn't shown very good accuracy in the NFL. Love the guy, was a tremendous college player, but I try to take of the S & G glasses when they move on to the NFL.

1. Denver has one of the worst pass defenses in the league.
2. Cleveland is awful
3. Pittsburgh is a shell of themselves without Troy. These recent performances are pretty inexcusable:
... a. Gradkowski = 300 yds 3 td 0 int
... b. Cassel = 250 yds 2 td 0 int. He's been poor in 5 of the other 6 most recent games.
... c. They did shut down Palmer, which was very good
... d. They shut down Orton, which most teams are doing lately.
... e. The only other good QBs they faced were Rivers (258 yds 3 td 0 int) & Favre (334 yds 0 td 1 int)

That is half the list. Those are 3 teams that are vulnerable for a good quarterback. Flacco is not a good QB at this point.

I'm not sure if you saw his 14-30 preseason performance, but it was REALLY solid. That included 8 official drops. He really moved in the pocket well, showed great accurracy, and had the announcers really impreseed, not that that means much.

I think in the right situation he could be a successful NFL QB. And he 100% would be a better option than Quinn or Anderson right now due to his versatility. Not saying he's a better QB than Quinn overall, but Troy has some intangibles not all QB's have. Plus his teammates LOVE him. The Suggs package was put in for a reason last year.

I also think Flacco has shown a lot of promise and has looked great at times. I still wonder if Troy hadn't gotten sick, what may have happened to his career. Flacco won ZERO games last year for Baltimore. He turned around and handed the ball off to McGahee and Rice and was game manager. Baltimore's record is identical with Smith as a starter last year. It'd be interesting to see if that would have parlayed into anything.
