QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

He's a hall of fame player with coaching experience and he's only 52 years old. His career is not over unless he doesn't want to coach any more. He'll have multiple offers to join staffs as an assistant.

Possibly, but only as an assistant. SF was his shot at HC. He should've stuck with Troy.

Troy's 3-3 record as a starter this season (plus 1-1 in 2007) is at least as good as a lot of other NFL quarterbacks out there.
Agreed. But not sure that makes him good enough to start anywhere. I love Troy, but I have a hard time seeing this end with him being a starter anywhere.

But please Troy, prove me wrong.

The problem for Troy he now has to deal with is that he now has the dreaded "J" label that generally spells the end of the dreams of an established position somewhere for several years. I am speaking, of course, of "Journeyman". Enough teams have looked at him and not seen a potential "elite" QB in the making that he will now be scrapping to stay on NFL rosters the rest of his career, because the scouts don't think his ceiling is high enough. Sadly that probably means he will not get enough reps to "break out", even if he could do so with the same number of reps that, say, a Colt McCoy or JIMMAH Claussen get early in their careers. It pains me, because if guys like Trent Edwards get their shots why shouldn't Troy, but I really don't think he will be handed a starting job, now or ever.

He could at least put up a solid fight for the starting job in Buffalo, that's for sure. Fitzpatrick proved to be an upgrade over Edwards, and put up more yards and TDs than I expected, but he's still a mediocre (mid-70s career rating) NFL quarterback.

Alex named starter for final game. That team is a joke.

Seriously. What else does Alex Smith have left to prove? The 49ers are out of playoff contention, and Alex Smith has failed to produce more victories than Troy in a substantially larger role. He is going to be kicked to the curb after this game. So the realist in me would guess that the 49ers would let Troy have one more go, and see if they can find more use for him.

Troy - 3-3
Alex Smith - 2-7

The fact that they pulled Troy when they were down 15-14 in the second half to the Rams, with the playoffs on the line, will never make sense to me. I understand that the 49ers have a quarterback that they foolishly invested their first overall pick in, but enough is enough.

The fact that Troy was playing one of his poorer games of the season, and had his team in the game, illustrates that he at least provides some value to their anemic offense and organization.

I think that's removing Troy of any stake in his career to date. The fact is, he's had chances with two teams. One released him, and the other hasn't seen fit to make him their full time starter. Not yet, anyway.

He had two good starts but got progressively worse with each successive start. Go look at his numbers. You won't last in the NFL completing less than 50% of your passes and throwing as many picks as TDs. The Niners have plenty of flaws but that doesn't mean Troy's play hasn't been one of them.

I'd love to see him get another shot this Sunday to end on a high note but to this point in his career he simply hasn't been the player many of us had hoped in the NFL. Frankly, those expectations were probably too high based on our appreciation of him. He was drafted at the end of the 5th round. The next year the Ravens took a QB in the first round. That spoke volumes.

I wish him the best. :osu:

I don't exactly disagree with anything you say, but I think the frustration here isn't just a homer thing, but a legitimate feeling that Troy hasn't gotten a real shot to prove he's good enough or not good enough. Guys like Kyle Boller and Alex Smith have established that they're not good enough over dozens of starts. Troy may well also not be good enough, but single digit starts
for a team with which he's never been through a training camp don't establish that IMO. The fact is, however bad his statistics are and whatever his consistency issues are, he at least has shown flashes of real playmaking ability and leadership and the other flaws MAY be largely a function of insufficient reps/time with the team. Getting yanked for a dude who's established over time that he's not good enough blows in these circumstances.

I have never felt that Troy Smith's contribution in life would be as a quarterback. I see Ted Ginn Sr. I see Troy Smith in twenty years. Perhaps not as a football coach, but as someone who helps troubled young men come right in life.

well obviously san fran and baltimore has seen enough...maybe 3rd times a charm

Agreed. Perhaps Troy can still find his way, but there's no use in acting like Troy hasn't had opportunities...he's been on NFL teams for several years now. He HAS had chances, and the two NFL teams that have been involved aren't impressed enough to ask for more at the moment.

Actually, I think it is a homer thing. There wouldn't be a big debate over Troy Smith "getting screwed" if he was a graduate of South Florida, so let's be honest about it.

Kyle Boller and Alex Smith were first round picks in the NFL draft. Troy Smith was the last pick of the fifth round. Whether we like it or not, the league wide perception of Boller and Alex was much higher than Troy, and they are going to get more chances than Troy. To expect equal treatment is either naive or that homer thing, again.

No one said life is fair. I love our Troy but he's not going to get the benefit of the doubt given his draft status. He must produce quickly or he'll be set aside. That, unfortunately, has been the case.

I hope he gets another chance.
