Troy Smith not among 49ers receiving free-agent tenders

Published: Thursday, Mar. 3, 2011

The 49ers on Wednesday placed restricted free-agent tenders on three defensive players, even though those designations may be obsolete when a new labor deal is finalized.

The team did not place any restrictions on Troy Smith, a signal that it has cut ties with the quarterback who started six games last season.

Maybe it's already been posted, but if you haven't read this from eleven warriors yet, you should.

Coach Tressel is and always will be one of the all time great leaders of our university imo.

A different take on Coach Tressel's approach to coaching / teaching his players.....with Troy Smith used as an example (as well as Antonio Smith mentioned), but I'm sure there are hundreds of other examples of players and situations over the past 10 years that we'll never hear / read about.

Former OSU QB Smith would be good fill-in for Bengals
By Ken Paxson | Friday, July 8, 2011

Once the NFL labor situation is resolved, the Cincinnati Bengals need to start looking for a veteran quarterback to fill the gap while rookie Andy Dalton settles in.

There will be quite a few on the market once there?s a new collective bargaining agreement. I?ve heard rumblings about Bruce Gradkowski, who played with Oakland in 2010 and was less than impressive (5 TDs, 7 INTs, 66.3 QB rating).

Below are some of the options to consider. Stats are from 2010 (unless otherwise noted) and are TDs, INTs and quarterback rating from left to right.

Bruce Gradkowski (5, 7, 66.3)

Matt Hasselbeck (12, 17, 73.2)

Matt Moore (5, 10, 55.6)

Seneca Wallace (4, 2, 88.5)

Alex Smith (14, 10, 82.1)

Matt Leinart (0, 3, 64.6 - 2009)

Marc Bulger (5, 6, 70.7 - 2009)

Brady Quinn (8, 7, 67.2 - 2009)

Drew Stanton (4, 3, 78.4)

Trent Edwards (2, 5, 54.9)

Troy Smith (5, 4, 77.8)

Rex Grossman (7, 4, 81.2)

Ohio State?s Smith is actually a good choice out of this motley crew. He?s mobile, familiar with the AFC North and no threat to win the starting job long-term. The last thing the Bengals need is a quarterback controversy, so an average veteran like Smith would fit nicely.

Not looking good for Troy to have an NFL job this year being unsigned at this point. I'm wondering if he should consider signing with a UFL team in the hopes of playing well and getting another look from the League.

Who knows, maybe he could play in a backfield with Clarett. :wink2:

Cleveland has Wallace & Brown on roster.

I'd be just fine dropping Jarret and taking Troy. That's 2 quality backups, plus my all time favorite Buckeye.

:oh:

I'd like to see them drop Brown and pick up Troy.

NFL Free Agency: One Unsigned Player Every Team Should Consider Re-Signing

The quarterback situation in San Fran is the opposite of solid. And whoever lines up under center?be it Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick or current third-stringer Jeremiah Masoli?will have to be able to scramble out of trouble behind the team's shaky offensive line.

Smith didn't put up great numbers in his six starts for the Niners last season, throwing for 1,176 yards and five touchdowns versus four interceptions. But he does have more experience avoiding an NFL pass rush than Masoli (and Kaepernick for that matter), and no one should be surprised if this team needs to dust off its third-string QB at some point this season.

Makes sense on paper but it appears that bridge is burned. I hope someone picks him up. Still makes more sense than Brown as the 3rd QB in Cleveland.

Sometimes I wonder if these NFL personnel evaluators really know what they are doing. To take Masoli over Smith is just ludicrous.

I think the Niners are just done with Troy after last season, for whatever reason. Still think he makes more sense for Cleveland than Jarrett Brown who looks completely lost.
