QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Love Troy, but WTF????

Nate Davis looked great in the pre-season? WTH is San Fran thinking?

He had some flashes, but Davis didn't look great in preseason. Nor did Davis appear to have the work ethic to learn the playbook. I think Davis has the tools to become a solid QB, but the mental motor currently isn't there and Singletary wants determined players.

Good move for Troy because I doubt Alix Smith does anything spectacular this year.

The problem I had with Carr is that they traded Shaun Hill for a 7th rounder, and Hill was more than capable in that offense to be a backup. And then they gave Carr too much money considering he probably won't play much, if at all at this point.

Davis showed plenty of talent, I'd much rather spend resources on him than David Carr. A non-motivated Davis still looked like a fine backup.

I don't know, man, it's hard to keep investing in a guy who's not repaying the investment by working hard.

I agree Hill would have been a good backup. I would rather have had him than Carr. I think there's a chance there might have been some bitterness on his part after he lost the job and he might have wanted out. I also think he was a McCloughan guy and not a Singletary guy (sortof like Davis.) I also think it makes some sense to have a backup that can run the same playbook as your starter. Carr can run the playbook like Smith can. You need to change it up b/c Hill has such a weak arm.

I'm still on the fence about Davis.. he showed a lot of promise and I hate giving guys like that up. But I understand it. I still disagree, but it's at least understandable.

I never understood the Carr deal. Even if Shaun Hill had never existed. There were guaranteed to be cheaper options available. There are every year.

Either way, I'm happy we have Troy. I love him in this system and I think Singletary will love him as well. He's a gamer.

By my eye, Nate Davis looked SIGNIFICANTLY better than Alex Smith. But one poor pre-season game seemed to kill him. I have no idea on work ethic and inside knowings of the San Fran locker-room, but Nate Davis looked legit as an outsider....to the point, I thought he should get a look as the starter THIS YEAR. His TD throw to Ginn out of the endzone was a thing of beauty...but his best tangibles were quick throws and a strong arm.

I just don't get it...he must have been hated inside the locker-room

I agree 100%. But I've heard plenty that Davis had poor work ethic and just didn't seem to "get it." But he looked fantastic. Looked good enough to take a chance on. But I like Singletary, and if he wasn't good enough for him, I can accept that.

Alex Smith was starting this year no matter how good Davis looked though. And he'll be starting all year unless he's injured or actually loses multiple games. This is his year. If he fails again, Troy will have a shot and likely start next year.

I feel like people are going to be upset when he still doesn't play in SF. :p Patience! I have no faith in Alex Smith.

LOL poor Troy he goes from playing ball in Ohio to one of the worst fan bases in the NFL. Good luck Troy, wear rainbows to fit in out there.

Like someone else hinted, he already played in a city with a large gay population - Columbus. A big part of that terrible fanbase is looking for a reason to get Alex Smith out, so Troy will have plenty of support from us terrible fans.

Some of the most rabid football fans I've ever known have been gay. Not sure what your bedtime preference has to do with how loud you cheer.

The manner in which you cheer is, of course, another matter.

Troy has a tremendous opportunity in San Franisco. If he stays hungry and asserts himself to the 49er system, he has a real shot at significant playing time.

It could be great for Teddy too to have his old buddy around. Maybe they'll both find a fresh new start out there! Go Bucks!
