RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

He missed 3 games, but was dinged up almost his entire career. NFL is a 16 week season and more physical. And you're paying millions and millions of dollars.

I love Beanie, but as a GM you have to take his injury history into consideration. He's 6'3 and 240+ lbs as well. While many see that as a positive because of his size and speed, thats also a huge target that will take a lot of hits.

I'd take Beanie first because I think he has the most potential, but I don't get worked up over draft analysts labeling him as #3. It's a business move more than a talent breakdown.

Name me a power back who doesn't constantly fight through injuries. Beanie proved he can play through the pain in '07 and he played through it last year too.

Jonathan Stewart was injury prone. Adrian Peterson was injury prone. Willis McGahee got his knee blown out in his last game, still went first round, and has had a successful NFL career.

Legit 6'1" 240 lbs backs with 4.4-4.45 speed don't grow on trees. Not to mention having one of the most effective and devastating stiff arms ever.

I smell a vbet.

Pretty sure the Giants just put the franchise tag on Brandon Jacobs... just a minor comparison in terms of injury prone(ness)

Also a great example of why I wouldn't take a RB in the first round regardless. Too much quality for less money availible in the late rounds and too short a shelf life for RB's.

Let a team like the Bengals decide which one of these guys is a franchise back while you are out looking for the next Willie Parker or Brandon Jacobs.

I'm not disagreeing, really. I bet if you asked Todd McShay or that SI reporter if they had choose a RB for 1 game, they'd choose Beanie.

Over an entire career, I can see the other side. Knoshawn and Shady both had less injury troubles in college, even with Mccoy's knee surgery pre-college career.

Again, I'd take Beanie, but I can easily see the other side of it.

You smell correctly. I'll wait until April and make some vBets for a few of the Buckeyes that are eligible for the NFL Draft.

I agree and disagree. Beanie is, without question, the most physically gifted out of the three. But that is a lot of money being invested in him when he may not play a full season. All three of them could get injured at any given time, but he's more prone to it.

With that being said, I would take him first, because I don't think McCoy or Moreno could take an NFL pounding for 16+ games....so if I'm spending money on a RB to miss games, dammit I'll take Beanie every day of of the week.

Good points. I didn't see as much of McCoy as Moreno, but I think Beanie is better conditioned to hold up to an NFL sched than either of those guys. Moreno has great balance, which isn't going to do him much good when he gets hammered by NFL LBs. McCoy, well, is the Big East the best test for playing in the NFL? How many great defenses are there in the BE? Beanie played in the toughest run D conference, and he produced despite injuries. If Beanie falls to the late 1st round, then he'll be playing for a better team, which I have no problem with. I expect Beanie to have the best NFL career out of those three guys.

 McShay what a hack.

Dude talks about how his "change-of-direction" and "speed-burst" into the second level is great; goes on to say his competitiveness is in question and shows the one clip against scUM where Beanie ran out of bounds, and subsequently the fucking game with an injury. Says he could be the AP or Cedric Benson. It's just laughable, one video clip. What happened to the myriad of disgusting stiff arms? I guess ESPN burned all their positive tOSU footage [/sarcasm]

I agree with the bolded part, personally. He has the talent/potential/ceiling/whatever to be Adrian Peterson-good. OR his career could be plagued with shitty injuries. Let's hope it's the former

That I can agree on, it'll be one or the other. It always is with running backs. But as has been discussed before, you really can't question the dude's desire, heart, or competitiveness.

Unless you watch the single video clip of him running out of bounds. Oh well.

Benson was a pot-smoking dumbass. To compare Beanie to him is a travesty.

I don't recall Benson having the breakaway speed, devastating stiff arm, or vision that Beanie has, either. Beanie is bigger than Benson as well. I didn't get to watch him (Benson) much in college, but based on his performance in the NFL, I have no idea how he was such a great runner for Texas.

Not a fan of that comparison.

Ohio State football: Wells trying to show he's healthy at NFL combine

Beanie Wells, getting ready to spring during workouts last week at Ohio State

Beanie Wells has two things to do at the NFL Combine starting Thursday when the running backs report. He has to talk his way out of his injuries and run his way out of his injuries. I think he'll do both.

When I spoke with scouts and draft analysts late in the regular season, they saw Ohio State's junior running back as the No. 1 running back in the draft if he came out, and a possible top five pick.

Now, a lot of analysts see Wells falling beyond pick No. 20, behind Georgia's Knowshon Moreno.

That, I believe, is in part because no one saw a healthy Wells last season. From the moment he went down in the opener against Youngstown State, he wasn't the player he could be. That's a legitimate concern. But I think a 235-pound back running a 40 in the 4.3s is going to make people forget those concerns at least for a bit.

"I'm good, I'm 100 percent," Wells said last week while working out at Ohio State in preparation for the combine. "I couldn't be during the season because so much was going on. I never had time to sit back and rest and learn about new ways to get my body in better shape and get my body healthy. I can do that now because I have a lot more time on my hands, not having to go to classes and practice."

Ohio State football: Projecting Beanie Wells in the NFL Draft
by Doug Lesmerises
Wednesday February 18, 2009

Running backs arrive at the NFL Combine tomorrow, with Ohio State's Beanie Wells competing with Georgia's Knowshon Moreno and Pitt's LeSean McCoy to be the first back picked.

Nine mock drafts have Wells going from No. 5 to the Browns to No. 21 to Philadelphia. Five of the drafts have Wells becoming an Eagle. We'll be back in a bit with thoughts from Wells on what he needs to show in Indianapolis.
