RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

oh, and the players don't get free rides to college?

i'm so tired or the "universites make millions and the kids play for free"

how about playing for pride and a free ride through college. of course, in these days in a world full of greed, i guess that just isn't enough anymore.

And if we knew all the details of everything every OSU player ever did, you think some of them wouldn't have more than 1 incident either?
I think when you are ruled ineligible for one year, everyone will know. Last I heard, we didn't have anyone else ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

And what is the second new thing he did? You said lied to the cops...um, I mentioned that.
That's what you meant by cop problems. So he
1. Lied to police
2. Lied to OSU investigators
3. Lied to NCAA investigators
4. Violated NCAA rules which led to the lies in 2. and 3.

Ironically, if he hadn't lied to the police, then there would not have been the investigation that led to him lying to OSU and the NCAA.

How do you know if he apologized to Jim Tressel or Andy Geiger, or to the police? You have no clue. He did nothing to you, he does not owe you an apology. Robert Reynolds PHYSICALLY hurt somebody. I don't see how this can be equivicated with lying and passed off as better.
He may have apologized to them, he may not have. But Reynold's apology was public. Maybe, just maybe, on some level, Reynolds knew his actions was a black eye for the university and those associated with the university including the alumni. To me, that's speaks loudly about the level of maturity Reynolds has. And I think many feel that MoC lacks that level of maturity.

Did you ever play organized football? People do get PHYSICALLY hurt playing the game and sometimes it occurs in a pile, where anything goes. I do NOT believe what Reynolds did is acceptable, but stuff like that happens in a violent game.

And when a high profile person associated with my alma mater does something that is wrong (see MoC's list) and it casts my alma mater in a bad light, then that person has on some level done "something" to me.

I don't understand why, and I never will. Maurice Clarett has not personally hurt any one of the people who are filled with this venom.
I probably can't explain it to you since you said you never will understand, but what the hell, I'll type away. Mid-season his freshman year, he makes big news by thinking about leaving after one year. Then his shouting match with Spencer on the sidelines is caught on national TV during the Northwestern game. Then his behavior before the Fiesta Bowl about the funeral. (Recall there was MoC's version and Geiger's version). Then after the NC win, he just wanted to get home. Now I think many by this time were accepting that MoC maybe goes to the beat of a different drummer, but there was a certain fatigue with him. Then the theft from his car. Then the "story" about special treatment on tests. Then the investigation into the theft. Then the lies (police, OSU, and NCAA). By this time I think there were some folks who were simply weary of the negative press that followed MoC. It NEVER went away.

I am an alumnus and I supported MoC the whole time. I wanted him back mainly because I think the young man has some issues that possibly being around JT, he could have gained some important life skills. But I can tell you that I know many alumni who simply got weary of the continual never-ending saga and I think for them, that allowed bitterness to set in.
You probably still don't understand, but I can understand where the venom is coming from, even if I don't agree with it.

just pisses me off that everyone loved the kid when he was busy winning a national title for us, but now he wants his and everyone hates him
Soldier - Each item you chronicled alone isn't too bad (except the lying ones). There was more to the funeral story than what you stated, but that is irrelevant in this discussion. What you said (quoted above) is so true. In fact, how many of the people who truly hate MoC, would be cheering for him this fall if by some major flukes, he ended up back in the S&G?

"think when you are ruled ineligible for one year, everyone will know. Last I heard, we didn't have anyone else ruled ineligible by the NCAA."

Cris Carter. Vince Workman. Everybody loves Cris Carter.

"1. Lied to police
2. Lied to OSU investigators
3. Lied to NCAA investigators
4. Violated NCAA rules which led to the lies in 2. and 3."

Well, for all I know Cris Carter might have nailed the last 3 too. And I still would rather have somebody lying then somebody choking opposing QBs, driving drunk, or stealing golf clubs. The reason why Maurice gets the venom is because he is famous because he is a great football player. Not because he's done something so awful that has never approached by anybody else in the history of Ohio State football, as you are making it out to be.

"Did you ever play organized football? People do get PHYSICALLY hurt playing the game and sometimes it occurs in a pile, where anything goes. I do NOT believe what Reynolds did is acceptable, but stuff like that happens in a violent game."

Forget Reynolds. I SUPPORTED Reynolds on Bucknuts when people wanted to lynch him too. I'm an equal opportunity Buckeye supporter. We still have Chattams stealing, Bellisari and Joe and others driving drunk where they could have killed somebody, and we save all our moral indignation for somebody who lied to some twerps from the NCAA?

"And when a high profile person associated with my alma mater does something that is wrong (see MoC's list) and it casts my alma mater in a bad light, then that person has on some level done "something" to me."

Again, he's a victim of his own success. And I as an individualist just do not understand this one bit, how you let some teenager playing football for the school have anything to do with you personally on any level above being a football fan.

"Mid-season his freshman year, he makes big news by thinking about leaving after one year."

Overblown by a reporter. He said he was thinking about it. I'd think about it too.

"Then his shouting match with Spencer on the sidelines is caught on national TV during the Northwestern game."

Key word: caught. If you think Maurice Clarett is the only player who's ever gotten into it with a coach, then either you're nieve or Jim Tressel is an even greater person than I thought. The second could be true, I'll admit.

"Then after the NC win, he just wanted to get home."

He just helped win you a NC. I wouldn't worry about how he feels about it. So what, he wants to go home? That's his problem. He's not hurting anybody.

"Then the "story" about special treatment on tests."

You and I deserve as much blame for this as Maurice Clarett does.

Earle Bruce once supposedly said, "That's why a lot of coaches get into the cattle buisness. Cattle don't have alumni." Alumni really rub me the wrong way, thinking that the players somehow work for them and taking everything they do as a personal affront.

You seem to be contradicting yourself here. Wouldn't you say that Cris Carter is famous for being a great football player? You are incorrect in saying that MoC is getting the venom because he is a great football player. It is much much more than that. Why don't you ask those who truly despise MoC why they do so?

Forget Reynolds. I SUPPORTED Reynolds on Bucknuts when people wanted to lynch him too. I'm an equal opportunity Buckeye supporter. You were the one who brought Reynolds into this. I'm not sure where you get the "we save all our moral indignation" line from. I hope people would have moral indignation for those caught driving under the influence. And MoC did more than just lie to the NCAA. Unfortunately, he lied to the police first and that caused the cascade of lies from him after that first lie. (BTW, did you ever play organized football?)

Again, he's a victim of his own success. And I as an individualist just do not understand this one bit, how you let some teenager playing football for the school have anything to do with you personally on any level above being a football fan.
I guess you don't get it. My statement was about a high profile person. I didn't specify age OR an athlete. You did that on your own. My comment was much much broader than the narrow spectrum of athletics.

The bottom line is that you don't get the concept of having pride in your alma mater. That goes towards belonging to something larger than yourself which as an individualist you wouldn't understand.

As for all of the "Then" items I listed that you pulled out separately. My intention was to list items that may have caused some folks to get weary of MoC and his antics. It was meant to be taken as an accumulation. Each one by itself isn't much, but it's the accumulation.

However, I have played football and coached football and am not naive about players "getting into it" with coaches. It is rare that it happens to the level we witnessed at NW during the course of a game.

As for the "special" treatment on the tests, I do not feel any blame for this as you mention. When I first heard the story, I laughed since I know that oral exams are an acceptable evaluative tool, provided the professor has done this in the past and it wasn't preferential treatment.

Alumni really rub me the wrong way, thinking that the players somehow work for them and taking everything they do as a personal affront.
Are you a student now? Have you been a student at a university? If so, alumni donate money which believe it or not help students either directly through scholarships or establishing endowed chairs to attract top faculty. This is fact. And when an alumnus donates money to the Athletic Scholarship fund I guess that does give them the right to think, in an odd way mind you, that the athletes are being supported by him/her (which is akin to working for him/her).

Granted, some alums are assholes, just like with any large group, but to make a blanket statement about a group of people like that is something that I don't understand.

"You are incorrect in saying that MoC is getting the venom because he is a great football player. It is much much more than that. Why don't you ask those who truly despise MoC why they do so?"

I've seen many people who do and their answer boils down to, because he's brought so much negative attention. Why has he brought so much negative attention? Because he's a great football player. Out of the 50000 students at OSU, there are tons who have done things far, far worse then Maurice Clarett, far more "embarassing" or whatever to the university then Clarett. You don't know about them, because they're not great football players.

"You were the one who brought Reynolds into this."

I was using him as an example of somebody who did something bad, not about apologies. That's what you were using him for.

"(BTW, did you ever play organized football?)"

I didn't answer this the first time because I didn't see the relevance, I still don't, but no I didn't. I am a supporter of Robert Reynolds. I have no idea what this has to do with anything.

"The bottom line is that you don't get the concept of having pride in your alma mater. That goes towards belonging to something larger than yourself which as an individualist you wouldn't understand."

I do understand having pride, as I do. But not to the point where I let one person damage it. If you let one football player damage your pride, it seems to me as if your pride wasn't so secure to begin with.

"As for the "special" treatment on the tests, I do not feel any blame for this as you mention."

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you here, but my point was, it's a non-issue. He did nothing wrong, so why bring it up in the first place?

"Are you a student now?"

Yes, I am, although it's none of your damn buisness. I do not work for you, and neither does Maurice. When you donate to the university, you are DONATING. You are not making a contract with Maurice Clarett that he lives up to your standards. That's why its a donation, a gift.

"Granted, some alums are assholes, just like with any large group, but to make a blanket statement about a group of people like that is something that I don't understand."

My statement "Alumni really rub me the wrong way, thinking that the players somehow work for them and taking everything they do as a personal affront." Is quite obviously referring to those alumni who think that football players work for them and take their actions as a personal affront. Every time I see somebody mention in a discussion about Maurice that they are an alumnus, it is as a precursor to their bashing under those grounds.

rick james, do you really believe that he or half of these other players want a degree? thats fine for you and me, but these arent marketing execs or future psychologists or business owners... they are athletes, the student part left a long time ago.. if you ONLY want student athletes we better stop offering them majors like recreational athletics or whatever half of them get... sure some are good students, but thats not the real draw for half of the the major college programs and you know it..

you don't go to college to 'get an education' you go to college to get a friggin' career... you can be educated to the gills, but that doesn't mean jack squat... i knew some guys when i was in school who were recruited by some pretty major software companies as sophomores in College... a few of them left school to go work for those software companies... did those kids sell them selves short by getting a fat paying job instead of 'getting their education' heck no, you'd be an idiot to say yes...

and i, for one, am not a huge proponent of the liberal arts... i see a lot of the required classes as useless horsesh-- but that's just me... whatever.

football is a career for the select few, Moc being one of those select few with the talent to do so... and college, just as with the lawyers and doctors is the avenue to reach that career...

so get of the kid's back already... he only injured HIMSELF. your violent, spiteful attitude towards him is evidence of you throwing a tantrum because you didn't get your way... who friggin' cares about Moc... HE is the one who has to live with his actions, NOT YOU...

so PLEASE, get off MoC's back... he has enough trouble as it is without all the bad karma...

Rick James said:
Then they are being paid 50k to play football for 3 years.
yet they can't even afford to take their girlfriend to dinner and a movie, even though the school has an $80 MILLION athletic budget...

please...

I have the right to like or dislike whoever I want. If I don't like the qualities of a person, I have the right to have an opinion about whoever it is. Also, if I like a person's qualities, I have the right to like that person.
I will define my values. I refuse to allow someone else to try to define my values by attacking my opinions.
In other words, I don't like selfishness, arrogance, an inflated ego and taking the victim role.

What I really don't understand is the fact that so many of you defend this guy. You make excuses for all of his actions, and say they aren't a big deal, and everybody does it, but not everybody gets caught. Bullshit. If anything, I bet MoC has gotten away with a bunch more stuff that nobody knows about. I sincerely wish the guy luck in the NFL (and fully believe he will spend most of his time on an NFL roster on the injured reserve list). But I do not like him, and I definitely do not respect him. You cannot compare this kid to Cris Carter, because at least Cris Carter cared about his school. Yeah, all kinds of people make mistakes, and they are all entitled to forgiveness...if they want it. MoC doesn't even show any remorse. The kid honestly thinks he is entitled to stuff that everyone else has to work for. He has PROVEN that he HATES the Ohio State University in general, has PROVEN that he couldn't care less about his coaches or teammates, and has VERBALLY STATED that the university's administration "are a bunch of liars". And I am supposed to like and support this kid?

BuckeyeSoldier is always bringing up the funeral argument and making excuses for MoC's actions by asking if you also wouldn't be upset if the university refused to allow you to attend "your best friend's funeral". Again, bullshit. First, from all accounts, MoC was definitely not "best friends" with this kid. But, more importantly, MoC is a PROVEN liar, to the police, his coaches, his teammates, and his university's administration. Now, the admin's say that the NCAA would not allow them to pay for Mo's flight home. Mo says they're lying. Given the fact that Mo lied a documented 14 times to the NCAA alone, I think I will believe Andy Geiger. I am glad to see Mo gone.

LV: "yet they can't even afford to take their girlfriend to dinner and a movie, even though the school has an $80 MILLION athletic budget..."

If you believe this cry, you're being naive. Anyone who's attended OSU or any big time program for a day knows this isn't the case. Some of the most well paid amateur athletes made the same cry of, "I can't buy a hamburger," or, "I don't have enough quarters to do my laundry," to get sympathy. Hog wash. I heard Dominique Wilkins say that when he was in college, I heard CHRIS WEBBER say that while he was in college.

MoC (and the rest of em) can't afford to take their girlfriends out, but can afford to drive in SUVs that are so ridiculously loaded, it would make a pimp blush. And oh yeah, I forgot about the clothes, TVs, CDs, etc. I got news for these "poor" athletes" who can't afford McDonald's: sell the Bass Tube in your Fully Loaded Pathfinder. That should get you about $100, which will keep you & your girlfriend completely satisfied with Big Macs for an entire month.

Nice post, Sloopy.

These players "barely getting by" is laughable to me. And so what if OSU has an $80 million football budget? It's a business like everything else in this world, and it provides free education (even though some of you think that's not important to these guys), a free place to live, and a national spotlight to display these players athletic talent. If they are able to sign a LOI to play three years, and are fortunate enough to make it to the NFL, then it pays off in the end. Even if they don't make it into the NFL, how could you possibly complain? I'd give just about anything to be able to play for a football team like Ohio State, while getting my education for free. Just my opinion, though.

I guess what really bothers alot of buckeye fans is that this kid was given a scholie to play football at one of the best programs in the nation and the opportunity of a lifetime to get a education and the chance to earn a future and all the kid did off the field at OSU was accuse the administration of not letting him go to a funeral a few days before the title game and not that he complained but the way he felt he needed to make it public instead of discussing it with geiger and tressel and letting them handle it, he felt the need for the spotlight and decided to make an issue and say derogatory statements about the university. Do not get me wrong, he is a great football player, but the reality of this situation is this: he broke NCAA rules, lied to investigators, lied to OSU officials, lied to Columbus police and then did not take responsibility for his actions, instead of adhering to the guidelines of his suspension and working towards being reinstated, he hired a lawyer and basically probably cost himself millions and maybe his career depending on the outcome of the appeal to the supreme court.

He is a very talented player, but he is NOT a person we want representing OHIO STATE, yes I am aware he helped us win a title, for that he will have a place in OSU lore, but his legacy is one of what could have been. The majority of OSU fans will always remember him as putting himself before the team, he does not owe the fans anything, but he owes OSU something for giving him the opportunity to play football and earn a education.
