Real Racing, Formula One, F1 (official thread)

An insane race today in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Multiple restarts, with Verstapen and Hamilton battling into the first corner every time, guys going off the track, Verstapen having to give back a spot more than once, Hamilton hitting the back of Verstapen when he didn’t know he was supposed to be given the lead (although he may have been brake-checked).

Final result, Hamilton got the win and the fastest lap point, Verstapen got second, meaning the two drivers are tied going into the final race, with Verstapen holding the tiebreaker due to more wins this year.

Next week’s finale at Abu Dhabi is must-see racing.

I still don’t know all the ins-and-outs of F1, but I’ll sometimes throw it on for a Sunday morning.

I do know today’s race was wild.

I don't know all the rules concerning a F1 accident/safety car/restart; but I think Lewis Hamilton just got screwed.

Hamilton has like a 12 second lead over Verstappen with 4 or 5 laps to go, there's a wreck, safety car comes out, Verstappen goes into pit for new tires, all cars are behind the safety car, Hamilton is first, Verstappen is like the 5th or 6th car back, safety car leaves, they race for 1 more lap, all of a sudden Verstappen is right behind Hamilton, and passes him on the last lap for the win. How did Verstappen instantly get past those 4 or 5 other cars?

Verstappen wins the Abu Dhabi race and F1 Championship.

All the cars in between were down a lap, and they moved them out of the way in order to create the last lap excitement. Verstapen owes a debt to Latifi for crashing with 5 laps to go, and to the racing stewards who wanted to have excitement on the last lap, so they allowed a guy with 30+ lap fresher tires to get right on the ass of the guy who had a big lead.

Race control originally said those cars wouldn’t be moved out of the way, snd then they changed the ruling. And they changed racing history, basically taking away Hamilton’s record 8th championship.

What Happened on the Last Lap of the Controversial F1 Finale in Abu Dhabi?

Red Bull manager Christian Horner asked F1 race director Michael Masi over race radio about the situation: “Why aren’t we getting these cars out of the way? We only need one racing lap.”

Soon after that exchange, Masi made the decision to let the lapped cars pass the safety car. Mercedes manager Toto Wolff yelled over the race radio to Masi.

Wolff: “You need to reinstate the lap [57] … That’s not right.”

Masi: “Toto, It’s called a motor race, OK?”

Wolff: “Sorry?”

Masi: “We went car racing.”

While Masi technically has jurisdiction to make calls in the moment, Mercedes has lodged two protests over the situation.

According to F1 rules, all lapped cars must pass, which didn’t happen Sunday.

FIA rule 39.12 states: “If the clerk of the course considers it safe to do so, and the message ‘Lapped cars may now overtake’ has been sent to all teams ... any cars that have been lapped by the leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the safety car. … Unless the clerk of the course considers the presence of the safety car is still necessary, once the last lapped car has passed the leader the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap.”

Essentially, allowing time for all lapped cars to pass the safety car likely could have hampered Verstappen’s position to overtake Hamilton.

Tainted title if you ask me. It's like a baseball game where Team A is leading 7-4 at the end of the 8th, and the umps announce that the score to start the 9th will be 8-7 in favor of Team B. But I'm sure Netflix is happy.

Shit happens. If Pirelli hadn’t fucked up the tires in one race the finish wouldn’t have mattered. Add in a race where Hamilton got to unlap himself then proceeded to finish high in the points. Point is that there were a ton of what ifs. Mercedes had a couple of opportunities to get Hamilton off of those worn hards and chose not to.

American Haas F1 team first to reveal new 2022 car
New-look F1 cars designed to be more competitive

America's Haas F1 is out in front.

The only U.S.-based Formula One team on Friday became the first to reveal its 2022 car, which is built to new rules intended to improve the racing in the world's premier open-wheel series.

haas-1.jpg

The 2022 Haas F1 car is the first to be revealed. It's white, red and blue livery is representative of its primary sponsor, Russian fertilizer company Uralkali, rather than the American flag.

The VF22's most striking visual features are the cleaner-looking front and rear wings that, combined with the addition of underbody "ground effects" downforce-producing tunnels, are designed to reduce wake turbulence and allow the cars do stay closer together on the track through curves, with the aim of delivering more frequent passing opportunities.

.
The engines in the 2022 cars follow the previous 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 hybrid formula, but will now run a 10% ethanol blend. Drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin both return for the team's sixth season.

Well, it's out in the open now. Masi followed the instructions of the Red Bull guys to the tee. The reality is that when the VSC was out, there were five cars between Hamilton and Max. Hamilton had passed them by racing past them. Max passed them because Masi ordered them to let him pass. #TaintedTitle

Stole a title from the better driver.

I don't know much about F1, but I kind of started paying attention last year and that's how I feel about it. Seems that there was more fuckery than previously thought. Too bad.

And better team (disclosure, I root for McLaren not Merc). Red Bull is the most entitled and arrogant and whiny organization in sports: if you combined Notre Dame, the Patriots and the Yankees, you wouldn't come close to the level of douchebaggery that is Red Bull Racing.

Yeah as a kind of rookie fan, I can’t stand how Verstappen handled a few questions and then after seeing this debacle.. no bueno. Bunch of divas.

I feel like I’m probably going to be a Hamilton fan just to spite Red Bull.

Why is Hamilton so hated in F1? Seems like a good enough dude and also the GOAT.

I’m going to try to watch as much as I can this year. I enjoyed the storylines as much as the races I saw last season. There were some incredible races.

I watched the first F1 race of the season today. Some changes to the cars occurred since last season.

10 things you need to know about the all-new 2022 F1 car

1. It’s been designed specifically to promote better racing
2. The car will feature over-wheel winglets for the first time – and wheel covers are back!
3. The car will feature 18-inch low-profile tyres for the first time
4. The front wing and nose concept have been completely re-thought
5. An aero feature from the 70s is back! (sort of)
6. The rear wing features new ‘rolled tips’
7. It will use the same power unit as 2021
8. Cars will run on more sustainable fuel
9. Safety has been at the forefront of the design
10. The 2022 car has been put through over 7,500 simulations to get to this point

Anyway, some teams were more successful than others with their redesigned cars. Ferrari (Leclerc & Sainz) finished 1st and 2nd. Mercedes (Hamilton & Russell) finished 3rd & 4th). Haas the only American owner (Magnussen) finished 5th, his other driver (Schumacher) finished a respectable 11th. The Red Bull drivers (Verstappen & Perez) were in contention until the last few laps when they both had a mechanical problem and DNF.
