Recruiting Class of 2002--Rating

Great Thread! I may have missed this, maybe someone else commented, but I would bet breakfast that the 1967 recruiting class was pretty damned good. Rex Kern, etc., and I think that 4of the 5 1970 All Americans were from 67.

I am probably wrong!! But not too far off.

And if you were to analyze that 67 class within the context of how many became starters or how many made "contributions", I'll bet it was pretty darn awesome.

Again, if someone has the exact info, set me straight.

Thank you all and go Buckeyes.

What makes a good recruiting coach?

Someone hit me in the face with a frying pan.....how in the world did i not see this thread until just now????

both sides have great points and i really enjoyed reading the discussion.....

in an attempt to straddle fences here.....i will say that assigning numbers to recruiting classes is open to evaluation.....thats why i always refuse when someone asks "what are the odds of so-and-so coming to ohio state".....

so....let me do some research....one thing is for sure.....i really like the 02 recruiting class....more for the depth than the stars.....

by quickly scanning the 04 roster....it appears that 12 members of this seasons starters were from the 02 class and a whopping 18 members of the 02 class were major contributors.....

again....i love the depth of that class....

this gets down to conley's approach vs. coach t's approach.....conley went shotgun style, hoping a few would hit.....tressel throws darts......

just my 2 cents....

nobody is right or wrong in this thread.....

All that I have heard of Tressel's sales style is that he stresses the whole college experience, and for that matter, post-college experience. Obviously it's more complicated than that. Does anyone know what kind of recruiting strategies these guys use, at OSU or anywhere? What makes a good "living room coach"? How does Tressel's sales pitch differ from other coaches, other than the previously stated?
Those in the know, fire away. How are high school coach relationships built? Does it piss anyone else off that scUM has a coache's clinic at Colrain?

Well, the recruiting class of 2002 could accomplish something only the recruiting class of 1954 has done, and that's win two major national titles (and both classes will have done it in their freshman and senior years).

By the end of the season I think 2002 will be recognized as one of the greatest recuiting classes ever at OSU. Just like Will Smith, Kenny Peterson and Matt Wilhelm became monsters in their senior years... I'll bet the farm you'll see the same with Mike Kudla, Quinn Pitcock and Mike D'Andrea. Those are three names I think you'll add to your list when it's all said and done.

P.S> There is a farm in New York City.

S. Holmes is a RS Junior as well... though i highly doubt he will be back... i don't think there is a more polished receiver in college football... and he's only been a starter for 17 games or so... unless the wheels fall completely off, i'd be pretty darn surpprised if he doesn't get an AA nod...

great thread, BTW... this is what separates BP from the bn's of the world...

edit: just had a thought... TG2 was 3rd team AA last season, and Frosh AA... if he stays all four years he could could be a 4-time AA... has that ever been done before at Ohio State? i know there are 10 or so 3-timers, Doss being the latest... i think the '02 class was fantastic, and if that only warrants a 3.5 or whatever, i hope we get a 3.5 class EVERY YEAR...

The official count at the AD site is only being kept of 1st team A-A athletes. By that measure the current total of 3-time AA Buckeyes now stands at 7. Most likely had Pace stayed through his senior year that would be 8.

OSU Three-Time All-America Selections <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="300"> <tbody><tr><td id="content">1916, 1917, 1919</td><td id="content">Chic Harley</td><td id="content">RB</td></tr> <tr><td id="content">1928, 1929, 1930</td><td id="content">Wesley Fesler</td><td id="content">E</td></tr> <tr><td id="content">1930, 1931, 1932</td><td id="content">Lew Hinchman</td><td id="content">HB</td></tr> <tr><td id="content">1934, 1935, 1936</td><td id="content">Merle Wendt</td><td id="content">E</td></tr> <tr><td id="content">1973, 1974, 1975</td><td id="content">Archie Griffin</td><td id="content">TB</td></tr> <tr><td id="content">1974, 1975, 1976</td><td id="content">Tom Skladany</td><td id="content">P</td></tr> <tr><td id="content">2000, 2001, 2002</td><td id="content">Mike Doss</td><td id="content">SS</td></tr></tbody> </table>
Certainly you have to wonder if the likes of a Fesler or Harley could have cracked a true 4-time AA standing, but freshmen didn't get that type of recognition in the old days.

The interesting thing about Ginn making both Frosh and 3rd team AA is that is likely a nod to the future, so (based on counting 1st team AA) the most TG2 can shoot for now is 3-time AA on a four year playing time career in the Shoe. To get that 4th AA nod Ginn would have to play in a 5th year, that's a stretch of the eligibility rules and, given his many talents will attract the Pros, it seems somewhat unlikely to happen.

As far as I know, if Ginn (or anyone) garnered 4-time All-American status, he would be the (edit) second, anywhere, in Football -- in Div1A.
EDIT --
Hub Bechtol -- of Texas Tech (one year) and Texas (post WWII - 3 years) has the honor of being the only 4-time consensus All-American in D1A Football. Perhaps one of our Horn readers can confirm whether TT was D1A (edit - they were, as part of the Border Conference) back then, without doubt Univ. of Texas is and was D1A.
END EDIT
