S Donte Whitner (Official Thread)

If Donte goes pro, it's because he's ready to move on. Once your mind has been satisfied that you are no longer challenged like you once were, it can be better to go to the next level to improve. I'm sure a lot of folks on this board have experienced the same in their field of work.

Even if he isn't highly drafted, after a good season, he can restructure he contract like he was a first rounder to begin with.

I'm really just trying to come up with possible explanations, because I am a huge Donte Whitner fan, and I am going to miss that guy's steady play. He was the only person who NEVER missed tackles in addition to Hawk. Once Whitner's hand was on the player, he was going down.

Depend on the clauses that are written into the contract. As a fourth, or later, round draft pick he probably won't get to dictate a lot of what goes into his contract like he would if he were a first or second round pick.

Man I really hope he stays, he could be like Doss and come back for his senior season and say he is coming back to win the NC.

I have heard 3rd-5th round for him and with all these safeties declaring he could come back next year have a big year and be looking at first round.

Agreed, he could benefit so much by staying for his senior year. Not to mention going back to lead a defense that is a on a national championship contending team. There are only good things for him to stay.

DONTE PLEASE STAY!!!!

Wisconsin running back Brian Calhoun just declared for the NFL, and LenDale White is supposed to declare within the new few days. Although they're running backs and not safeties, the more pure talent that's available, the worse it is for Donte.

I can't believe some of the language I'm seeing in this thread...

"I'm disappointed in him"?!?! That's what you'd say to him if he flunked out or did something stupid. That sentiment should be reserved for people like Maurice Clarett, not Donte Whitner. Do you think Coach Tressel is "disappointed" in Donte Whitner? I don't see any reason to be disappointed in a young man who has excelled on and off the field enough to even warrant what he's going through right now.

Congratulations, and good luck to him - no matter what path he chooses.

I think they mean his decision, not him as a person. I think he'd be better off staying for his senior season. We all wish him the best of luck, we just wish he would stay one more year.

People are just disappointed because it's becoming quite obvious that it is a lose lose situation. Donte is not going to be a 1st day draft pick. There isn't even a guarentee he'll get drafted...sometimes that happens with safteies. He hasn't made a name for himself, and with another year of practice and college football, being a leader on the defense, it is almost certain that he would. If he is really that desperate for 5th round draft pick money, then that's fine, but it doesn't make much sense to me. Why not invest in yourself for another year, and then likely end up signing for a ton more money.
Also its a losing situation for the Buckeyes. They need him. He's A LOT better than where he would get drafted, and we know it. He'd be THE leader on our defense, and IMHO would have a great shot at being an AA.

That is what is disappointing. That his decision just doesn't make sense and doesn't seem to be good for either party.

Maybe part of me is also disappointed because of the passion I have for Ohio State, knowing that I personally would rather play there for free than get any amount of money to play for the NFL.

Here's a question I have. If Donte has contacted an agent...but now with what has happened, has decided that he'd rather stay, can he still come back? Could he like ask the NCAA to let him stay, since it would be in the best interest of Donte and the NCAA?
