S/LB Jer'Male Hines (official thread)

He may struggle at times with coverages at the moment but he certainly brings the wood when he finds the ball. If he gets his time in and learns the coverages where he can just go play without thinking, he could be the best hitter we've had here since Doss.

I couldn't find an official thread on Jermale Hines but he seemed to be all over the field against Troy last Saturday and he almost had a pick 6!

If someone has some stats on him could you please post them.

Football: The players of the week for the Troy game have been announced.
Defensive Player of the Week - Kurt Coleman with two interceptions.
Offensive Player of he Week - Terrelle Pryor with four touchdown passes.
Special Teams Player of the Week - A. J. Trapasso with three punts inside the 10-yard line.
Jim Parker Offensive Lineman of the Week - Jim Cordle
Attack Force Player of the Week - James Laurinaitis
Jack Tatum Hit of the Week - Etienne Sabino
Scout Team Champions: Offense - Ricky Crawford, Defense - Tom Ingham, Special Teams - Ben Kacsandi.

It's a shame Jermale didn't get recognition for an outstanding game against Troy.

Hit of the week should have been the one by Laurinaitis - on the Defensive Player of the Week.

(Am I the only one who looks up Laurinaitis name three times to check the spelling no matter how many times I have typed it.)

High times for Hines: Former Tarblooder adding power, speed to Buckeyes secondary

by Doug Lesmerises Wednesday September 24, 2008, 10:16 PM

COLUMBUS -- The screen pass that banged off Ohio State defensive back Jermale Hines after he jumped a route near the goal line Saturday -- that was no coincidence. Sure, he wished he would have grabbed the interception for a touchdown.
"I knew I had the pick," the sophomore said. "I dropped it. I faked outside and went inside and the ball was right there."
He'll have other chances, because Hines always finds himself around the ball. In his first year at a new position since moving from linebacker, the Glenville grad has blown away his coaches with rare football instincts while establishing himself as the ideal antidote to the spread offense.
"I'm not sure I've seen a guy who can go line up and play a position and probably didn't get coached," Jim Tressel said. "He's just got natural instincts and an understanding of the game of football."

At 6-foot-2 and nearly 220 pounds, safeties coach Paul Haynes sees linebacker size and safety speed in Hines, an combination that makes recruiters drool. That's why he has seized the "star" position for the Buckeyes, the role as the fifth defensive back that takes the field on passing downs. As Tressel exhorts a veteran team to play faster, Hines has stood out as a example of ferocious, yet intelligent, intensity.

Probably because of the few missed tackles he had. He's gotta work on those angles.

Jermale and Malcolm are now my two favorite defenders. No one else on D matches their intensity.

I rewatched the Troy game today, and Jer'Male was flying around like crazy. There were some mistakes, but you could see that this kid has some ridiculous potential and is going to be the next star DB for us. Can't wait to see him progress throughout his career. He's also quickly climbing my favorites ladder. Love watching him play.

He didn't play a whole lot at Wisky as they ran the base offense, but he did come in a couple times, and he scares me in coverage still...

The one first down play where Beckham caught the pass and got undercut by Homan and then hit by Hines...They did a rub type route and Hines got totally lost by Beckham for the first down...He did recover and lay the wood to him after the undercut...

I think he will be all over the field this week with all the WR screens Purdue will bring this weekend...
