Report: Carroll close to five-year, $35m deal | ProFootballTalk.com

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reports that Pete Carroll and the Seahawks are "close to a deal" that would pay Carroll $35 million over the next five seasons to be Seattle's coach and team president.

Carroll has often attributed his mediocre record in New England to his lack of control over personnel. That wouldn't be a problem in Seattle, where the president tag indicates Carroll would run just about everything.

Potential chaos in the recruiting world this late in the process when ships are scarce. 1 of every 5 players in the Scout top 100 are either committed to USC or considering them.

Report: Carroll accepts Seahawks' offer

Posted by John Taylor on January 8, 2010 8:58 PM ET
Five or six hours after news first bubbled to the surface that the Seattle Seahawks had interest in Pete Carroll -- and vice versa -- we now have the first report that the current head coach at Southern Cal has become the former head coach at Southern Cal.

According to Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News, Carroll has accepted a job offer from the Seahawks, and all that remains is for the contract details to be ironed out.

As reported by the Los Angeles Times earlier this evening, the two sides were discussing a five-year, $35 million contract for Carroll to become both the head coach and president of the club.

With Carroll's departure now seemingly out of the way, the focus will shift to the bastion of Trojans football's replacement.

Per various reports, Oregon State head coach Mike Riley seems to be the leader in the clubhouse. Other candidates could include Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, current Washington coach and former USC assistant Steve Sarkisian, and a pair of current NFL head coaches -- Jeff Fisher of the Tennessee Titans and Jack Del Rio of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
