SF/PF J.D. Weatherspoon (transfer to Toledo)

OSU basketball: Weatherspoon joins large class of 2010

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

J.D. Weatherspoon learned a lesson about taking initiative without having to learn it the hard way.

"It's a business," the Northland High School senior said yesterday when asked why he decided to commit to the Ohio State men's basketball program. Weatherspoon had said recently he wasn't likely to decide until September.

"Two days ago, a school that was recruiting me signed a player at my position and backed out of my scholarship (offer)," Weatherspoon said. "I was just thinking to myself, 'What if Ohio State does the same thing?' I told my family I can't wait no longer."

Weatherspoon called Ohio State coach Thad Matta yesterday morning and accepted Matta's scholarship offer, which had been made in May.

Weatherspoon, a 6-foot-6 forward, said he chose Ohio State over Xavier. He made a commitment to Xavier last year and rescinded it in the spring when coach Sean Miller left for Arizona, but the Musketeers left the offer in place.

Until Sunday night, that is, when 6-5 forward Jay Canty of Jamestown, N.C., committed to Xavier.

J.D. Weatherspoon
Small/power forward
6-7, 190
Columbus (Northland HS)
Rivals.com rank: 137

Weatherspoon:
"The chemistry is going to be right there (with four of the recruits from the same AAU team). That's what makes a real great basketball team, chemistry, and we've got that out of the way right away. It's going to be lovely to watch. We're not planning on losing any games. We haven't lost at Ohio State yet" in the high school games Northland has played in Value City Arena."

Matta:
"J.D. was the last addition to the class. He was one we actually told last year we want to see you play through your junior year. He had a decommitment (from Xavier in the spring) and became available, and I had seen what I needed to see through the state tournament.

"Hopefully in time, we can (develop him) into a wing forward as his shot develops. He?s an extreme athlete. He may be one of the most athletic players that I?ve ever recruited. He?s got a great knack for rebounding the basketball. Watching what coach (Satch) Sullinger does with those guys (at Northland), he teaches them the game and he?s got a pretty good feel for how to play. I view him as a guy who can guard a lot of positions on the floor, a lot like David Lighty."

I'm really excited to see this kid in the S&G. He may be a bit raw, but I envision his versatility and athleticism leading to some great things here. Watching him come out and exert himself in the second half of the State Championship game after foul trouble in the first half shows his desire to win. 'Spoon is another great addition to the program.

For anyone that watched the game last night, did J.D. end up playing? It's pretty impressive that Northland beat the #1 team in the nation and would be even more impressive doing so without their second best player.
