Ohio State tight end migrates to J-State
Recently suspended Frost joins parade of Division I-A transfers

By David Brandt

Jackson State's recent trend of picking up talented, yet troubled, Division I-A football transfers continued on Thursday.
Ohio State's Marcel Frost, the team's starting tight end entering fall practice, has decided to transfer to Jackson State after being suspended by the Buckeyes less than two weeks ago for the 2006 season.
"Ohio State released (Frost) and we picked him up," JSU coach Rick Comegy said. "Obviously, he gives us a great option at tight end with great hands. He should be eligible for us right away."
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Frost was listed as the Buckeyes' first-team tight end as recently as two weeks ago.
But he was suspended from the Ohio State football team on Aug. 9 for the entire 2006 season after violating undisclosed team rules. He did keep his scholarship and was eligible to return to the Buckeyes in 2007 if he chose.
"I made a bad decision at Ohio State and it cost me," said Frost, who declined to give a specific reason for the suspension. "The last week has been pretty crazy, but I'm confident this is a place where I can have fun with football and help the team win."
Frost played in nine games for Ohio State in 2005, starting five. He caught seven passes for 70 yards.
The addition of Frost is JSU's latest in a parade of Division I-A football players with highly regarded talent and a spotty past to find a home in Mississippi.
Linebacker Daniel Brooks was booted from Tennessee after several run-ins with the law. Former Notre Dame player LaBrose Hedgemon was suspended for two semesters for unspecified reasons. At Ohio State, Erik Haw was arrested on a marijuana possession charge and later pleaded guilty to an amended charge of disorderly conduct.
Frost said Haw - his former teammate at Ohio State - is one of the main reasons he decided to come to Jackson State.
"He said that down here they were trying to win football games just like at Ohio State," Frost said. "I think (Haw) was right. There's more talent then I expected here."
JSU athletic director Bob Braddy said he supported Comegy's decision to give Frost another opportunity to play football.
"This is America and I think everyone deserves a second chance," Braddy said. "I haven't learned the nature of (Frost's) troubles at Ohio State, but I have all the confidence that coach Comegy has sat him down and spelled out what he expects of him in this program."

That quote shows a level of maturity from him... totally blaming himself and not the program. Chalk it up for a life lesson and hopefully he learns from it. Good luck at Jackson State but I still disagree with transferring.. same with Eric Haw or anyone else that transfers because they won't get playing time. These players made a commitment and should stick with it.

Glad to see Marcel take responsibility for his actions. I'll be pulling for him.

Oh yeah, he had kept his scholarship is spite of his suspension in case he wanted to return next year, but his transfer out of Ohio State now frees it up...

Well, considering that league (SWAC) has produced (arguably) the greatest RB and WR ever to play, 3 members of the NFL 75th anniversary team, and 10 HOFers, I'd say his prosepcts can be pretty good down there if he keeps working hard.

Best of luck to him.

Big target Frost follows Haw's path to Tigers
By David Brandt
[email protected]

After his first practice on Thursday morning, former Ohio State tight end Marcel Frost and quarterback Jimmy Oliver stayed on the field to run a few passing routes.
By his fourth throw, Oliver had a big grin on his face because he had figured out how hard it is to miss Frost, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound target.
"(Frost's) a huge guy that can catch just about anything," Oliver said. "We had heard rumors we might get someone like this over the past few days, but that's all I heard."
Those rumors turned to reality Thursday, when Frost - wearing No. 8 - was getting acclimated to the Jackson State offense after more than three years at Ohio State.
"The hardest part is understanding all the terminology," Frost said. "But I'm sure I'll figure it out. It seems like a good offense that will have success."
Frost comes to JSU with some baggage. He was suspended by Ohio State for one year on Aug. 9. The Buckeyes said Frost violated undisclosed team rules, and Frost won't say what he did, offering only this: "Man, I just made a mistake."
Coach Rick Comegy said after a long discussion with Frost's parents he decided to make the tight end Division I-A transfer No. 9 on the Tiger roster.
"I think once you really deal with Frost, you'll see that he's a great kid," Comegy said. "I've had a lot of success as a coach giving kids another chance. I think they understand that if they mess up here, they're done. Often, it's my transfers that behave better than my returners."
Frost said one of the main reasons he chose Jackson State was because of running back Erik Haw, who also transferred from Ohio State less than a month ago.
"I explained my situation to Erik and he told me I should come check (Jackson State) out," Frost said. "He told me football's fun down here and the competition's still real good."
SATURDAY'S SCRIMMAGE
The Tigers held their second scrimmage Saturday night and the first half featured a defensive smackdown.
But the second half saw the offense score five touchdowns, including one on a pitch from Oliver to Carlos Simpson that turned into a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jaymar Johnson.
The other highlight was a 40-yard touchdown pass from freshman William Brack to Johnson.
"I think both sides saw some good things and that's what you want from a scrimmage," Comegy said.
Several players sat out with injuries, including linebacker Daniel Brooks (knee) and defensive end John Archie (foot). Comegy said both players could have played, but were held out to be safe.
The third string received extended playing time for both the offense and defense. Comegy said he planned on finalizing a travel squad sometime in the next few days.
THE COMEBACK TRAIL
Defensive tackle Jamile Owens has been upgraded from a cast to a boot on his right foot, and defensive line coach Jack Bush said he expects the junior to be back on the field in one-to-two weeks.
Running back David Kennebrew returned to practice on Friday after sustaining a concussion last week. He has been cleared for full contact on Monday.
Junior defensive tackle Jonathan Celestine is not practicing with the team. Instead, he's finishing coursework at College of the Canyons Community College.

what a traitor! i understand Haw's reason to leave, but because your suspended for ONE season, and can come back next year, you just get up and leave. To me that's sellfish!
I disagree with your opinion about Frost.

Realistically he could have been in dog-house mode even after coming back. Going to Jacksonville State frees up the scholarship he would have held this year and next, there is no way that is a selfish consideration. Last but not least, his words reveal a willingness to accept responsibility for his actions, and not back-stab the Ohio State University.

The only part in this that serves his interest is the opportunity to play this year, on a lower Division squad with less media attention.

If he's to be considered a "traitor", it should be for his choosing the weed over the chance to start at tOSU - not for transfering. Some of his teammates might use that word, I don't know.

Thanks for freeing up the scholarship, Marcel.
