The University of Toledo is expected to name Tim Beckman, defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, as its new head football coach, The Blade has learned. The announcement could come as soon as this afternoon. Late last night, the university announced a news conference for 1 p.m. today. Insiders at both UT and in Stillwater, Okla., confirmed that Mr. Beckman had been offered the job and was expected to accept. UT Athletic Director Mike O'Brien would not confirm the hiring when questioned at last night's UT-Massachusetts men's basketball game at Savage Arena. When asked if a decision was imminent, Mr. O'Brien said, "Stay tuned." Booster Chuck Sullivan, who was on the search committee to find Tom Amstutz's replace-ment, said last night he expected the Rockets would have a new football coach "in the next 24 hours." A native of Berea, Ohio, Mr. Beckman would become the 25th football coach in UT history, replacing Mr. Amstutz, who stepped down after eight years. Mr. Beckman, 43, is a familiar name to northwest Ohio football fans after he spent seven years coaching defense at Bowling Green, six as the Falcons' defensive coordinator. He was hired in 1998 by coach Gary Blackney and worked under coaches Urban Meyer and Gregg Brandon. Mr. Beckman helped the Falcons to the 2003 Mid-American Conference West division title and victories in two bowl games. In 2001, his Falcon defense led the MAC in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, and turnovers. In 2005, he left Bowling Green to become the cornerbacks coach at Ohio State. He worked under head coach Jim Tressel for two seasons, helping the Buckeyes to the national championship game in 2007. He then took the defensive coordinator position at Oklahoma State under head coach Mike Gundy.

Source: Beckman to Toledo
The hiring of the OSU assistant is expected to be announced Thursday.

Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Tim Beckman is expected to be introduced as the University of Toledo's new head football coach on Thursday, the Tulsa World has learned.

A press conference is scheduled for noon Central time in Toledo, Ohio.

A source confirmed to the Toledo Blade newspaper that the 43-year-old Beckman, who has coordinated the OSU defense for two seasons, was selected to lead the Rockets' program.

Attempts to contact Beckman and Cowboy head coach Mike Gundy were unsuccessful.

It is not known whether Beckman would make an immediate move to Toledo or remain with the 14th-ranked Cowboys (9-3 overall, 5-3 Big 12) through their bowl game. On Sunday, OSU will learn its bowl destination.

It is believed that Rocky Long, who recently resigned as New Mexico's head coach, could be viewed as a candidate for OSU's defensive coordinator position. The 58-year-old Long is nationally renowned as an outstanding defensive coach.

Beckman, a native of Berea, Ohio, has a history in Toledo's conference the Mid-American Conference. As Bowling Green's defensive coordinator in 1998-2004, he was a three-time nominee for the Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant coach in college football.

Coach Beckman was very classy at his press conference today. He was very geniune and enthusiastic. He thanked many people and coaches that influenced his lfe. Specifically, he thanked Coach Jim Tressel and credited him with showing him how a true program is built. He also referenced his father's ties to Coach Lee Tressel. I think this is a very good fit and he is going to do well at Toledo.

An Ohio guy comes home

It appears that Tim Beckman, a former cornerbacks coach at Ohio State, will be hired today as head coach at Toledo, according to the Toledo Blade, at least.
This ends the brief speculation that Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell might get the Toledo job.
I enjoyed working with Beckman in his two years at OSU (2005 and 2006 seasons). He was engaging and bright. I'm sure he wanted to return to Ohio, as both he and his wife are natives. He played at Findlay and was a longtime assistant at Bowling Green before coming to OSU.
The only thing I find curious is that Beckman most recently has been the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, and, well, the Cowboys' defense isn't very good. In 2007, Oklahoma State's defense ranked 101st nationally out of 119.
This season, the Cowboys defense improved.....all the way to 85th. I guess, in the wild, wild Big 12 with all those great offenses, maybe 85th is decent?

UT hands football reins to Beckman
Oklahoma State assistant has strong Ohio ties

University of Toledo athletic director Mike O'Brien, right, says he believes Tim Beckman's ties to Ohio will help him as coach.

Tim Beckman has moved around the country for football coaching jobs since he was in diapers, first with his father Dave and then for his own career. One common theme prevailed - he has always returned to Ohio. Beckman has again made the Buckeye State his home by accepting the University of Toledo's head coaching job, the school announced yesterday. A former assistant coach at Bowling Green and Ohio State, Beckman was most recently the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State the last two years. Born in Akron, he is a graduate of Berea High School in suburban Cleveland and the University of Findlay. "He has great ties to the state of Ohio," UT athletic director Mike O'Brien said. "No one is going to outwork Tim and his staff."

Beckman inspires Rockets

When Tim Beckman was named head football coach at the University of Toledo, he stood before the cameras and behind the microphones and spoke of academic excellence, of camaraderie, of competition, of citizenship, of his program forging a bond with the community, and of spreading the Rocket brand far and wide. In other words, he said everything that every new coach says during those feel-good, still-undefeated introductions to the masses. Sure, he put a wrinkle or two on the typical speech. He talked about how his players would be required to attend every class and always sit in the first two rows of seats. He talked about "encouragers" who would be hired to monitor attendance and adherence to the academic rules. He said his team would compete for the highest GPA in the athletic department and that those who achieved great things would realize great rewards. And blah, blah, and blah. Anybody can talk the talk and Beckman definitely had it down pat. "We'll do things right, and when things are done right it will have a direct correlation to winning football games," he said. Talkin' the talk. But who knew if and when his team would walk the walk?

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : Beckman sets bar for Toledo rebound

Since fall quarter of 2008, the team's grade-point average has shot up to 2.9 from 2.3.
"With our football team, it is about accountability and discipline," athletic director Mike O'Brien said. "You are responsible for the University of Toledo. First and foremost, it's about academics. You dare not miss class. You must sit in the first two rows."
The man behind it all is first-year coach Tim Beckman, a Findlay graduate and Ohio State cornerbacks coach from 2005-06.
Beckman, 44, was hired in December when it looked like the Rockets' house couldn't be put back together again.

Great article about Beckman in this morning's Dispatch. Definitely rooting for him, other than this Saturday.

Toledo football coach Tim Beckman left Ohio State Buckeyes in 2007, but not without a parting gift: Ohio State Football Insider

Thursday, September 17, 2009 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- Toledo coach Tim Beckman left a present for Ohio State before he departed Columbus after the 2006 season to become the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. It was just what the Buckeyes wanted - a linebacker.
OSU starting middle linebacker and Florida native Brian Rolle said he wouldn't be at Ohio State if not for the relationship he developed during recruiting with Beckman, who was basically his only connection to the school.
"He was like a brother. I felt when he was in my home that I knew this guy," Rolle said. "Coach Beckman was the only guy I saw. He was the guy that really sold me on the school."
That's how it works in recruiting - a coach sells you on the school and then leaves soon after you arrive. But getting Rolle out of Florida - "I still wonder how they found me," Rolle said - was no easy job for Beckman. And the connection was so strong, it might have taken Rolle farther from Florida.
After two seasons as Ohio State cornerbacks coach, Beckman went to Oklahoma State in February 2007 less than two weeks after National Signing day, when Rolle officially became a Buckeye.
"I probably would have gone to Oklahoma State if he had left here and gone there sooner," Rolle said. "Then that would have been bad because he would have gone to Toledo."

Coming off an upset of Colorado, coach Tim Beckman appears to have the Toledo program headed in the right direction.

Let's start with the lima bean story.

Tim Beckman and his younger brother, Ted, were kids eating supper when the competition erupted in front of their incredulous parents.

"We were sitting at the dinner table and we found them trying to see who could get the most lima beans on their fork," his father, Dave, recalled with a laugh.

"One says, 'I've got 14. You've got 12.' That's how competitive they were. Everything (Tim) does is competitive. He believes that's how you win."

On Saturday, Beckman, a former Ohio State cornerbacks coach under Jim Tressel, will have much more at stake than vegetables when he coaches Toledo against the Buckeyes in Cleveland Browns Stadium.

"I get to play against one of my mentors," Beckman said. "I've learned a lot of things about football and life from Jim Tressel. It's an honor to be on the same field with him and coach against him."

Illinois to name Toledo?s Tim Beckman as new coach
By Herb Gould [email protected] December 8, 2011

Illinois is expected to announce the hiring of Toledo coach Tim Beckman as its new football coach on Friday. | J.D. Pooley~AP

Updated: December 9, 2011 2:23AM

Toledo coach Tim Beckman is no home run. But after striking out or passing on more glamorous candidates, Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas is expected to introduce Beckman as the Illini?s new football coach Friday.

If Beckman, 46, wins a few games and plays his two-point-conversion cards right, Illini Nation might settle for an opposite-field double off the wall.

Unlike hot Houston prospect Kevin Sumlin, an offensive guru who turned down an offer that might have approached $3 million a year to become Illinois? first black football coach, the under-the-radar Beckman is a defense-oriented coach who has made steady progress in his third season with the Rockets.

Thomas wasn?t going for the splashy Mike Leach or other veteran coaches who might have baggage. He apparently was turned down by more people than Sumlin and Cincinnati coach Butch Jones, sources said.
