Tim Beckman (you're fired!)

Don't seem all that ironical to me neither.

Reading between the lines on this hire: 1) it appears Hazell is living up to expectations as a coach and a recruiter and JT is anxious to keep him here and happy; 2) it seems Beckman will be much more than a position coach. He'll be involved in 'all aspects of the defense', 'gameplanning' and will 'sit in the press box' on gameday, doing what DCs (with the exception of Mark S.) usually do up there -- calling plays; 3) tOSU cornerback position is going to get a ton of TLC this summer and fall, to make sure we've replaced Foxy with talent and depth; and 4) Cleveland and Northeast Ohio will get a stellar Buckeye recruiter to keep that pipeline flowing wide-open.

All these are great signs and show once again what a master administrator JT is -- beyond the Xs and Os. He is turning this program into the finest in the country in every important way -- on the field, in the classroom, on the recruiting circuit and among young, 99th-percentile assistant coaches.

Over time, you get the sense that this is the job JT was born to do. Born and bred to master every aspect of college football coaching and to leave a remarkable legacy when it's his time to give it up. He will be a College Hall of Fame coach and could go down as the greatest of all time, with 9 or 10 NCs after his name, like a Red Auerbach or a John Wooden.

Solid guy.....already stated that he is the Cleveland guy and will start this week. Was the recruiting coord. at BGSU and has been at BG since 1998 with Cleveland as his area.

Was a patient of my dad's in BG and he says that their family is top notch. The guy almost followed Urban Meyer to Nevada and would of been the D Coord. at Florida right now if his father in law hadn't passed. This is a steal and a blessing at the same time.

I feel bad for BGSU but it is a stepping stone school anyway.

Marshall....way of basis....grew up in BG and have many friends that work for Krebs as well as people in the community that are Trustees.

Beckman was so loved at BG that if Brandon ever left he would be the head coach in a second. Very well respected. Only coach retained by previous 2 coaches after Blackney was fired.

What is with the BUGS comment...I guess you Hiljack's have nothing better to do but arrange acronyms and fuck your sister.

So I'd guess that there's a chance he might eventually head back to BG to be their HC? Nonetheless, for the here and now (and we need a here and now guy, because '05 is our year!) this guy is a solid addition.

At the rate we're going, every head coach in the state of Ohio will be a former OSU coach.

This is a fantastic snag! The guy is very skilled with X's and O's against the spread offense. I think that Tressel brought him in especially for this fact, in addition to the fact that he is highly thought of by Blackney and Meyer. I love his attitude, I think that he is next in line for defensive coordinator at OSU.

Tim Beckman, defensive backs coach

On Bowling Green

"Bowling Green has a great staff. They do a great job with their players. It will be an exciting time for them and for me this week. It is going to be different to be on the other side this year. Bowling Green will come in and be there in the fourth quarter. They know how to win there. We can't take any team for granted in college football."

On being ranked No. 1

"Every week you get every team's best blow. They are coming out with their best shot and that is what you get win you are No. 1."

On working for Ohio State

"Being around football all my life, Ohio State is a dream come true. Then you add working with Jim Tressel. That is what I tried to do since his days at Youngstown State. It is a dream for anybody in college football to be at Ohio State. It is one of the top programs in the country

Beckman Joins Ohio State Football Staff

Head coach Jim Tressel announced the addition of Tim Beckman to his staff.

April 29, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio: Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has filled the vacancy on his staff by hiring Bowling Green assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Tim Beckman.

Beckman, who has been a member of the Bowling Green staff since 1998, replaces Mark Snyder who recently became the head coach at Marshall University. At Ohio State, the 39-year-old Beckman will work with the Buckeyes' cornerbacks and will be involved in all aspects of the defensive operation.

Prior to Bowling Green, Beckman coached at Elon University and Western Carolina. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Auburn, including the 1989 campaign which concluded with the Buckeyes and Tigers meeting in the 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl.

While at Bowling Green, Beckman was a three-time nominee for the Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year Award and was a finalist for that honor in 2001, when the Falcons led the Mid-American Conference in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, total turnovers gained and scoring margin.

"Tim is a great addition to our staff," said Tressel. "He really knows the game, he has worked under three excellent coaches at Bowling Green in Gary Blackney, Urban Meyer and Gregg Brandon and he is an excellent recruiter."

Beckman is a native of Berea, Ohio and a 1988 graduate of the University of Findlay. He lettered for the Oilers in 1984 and '85, with both of those teams qualifying for the NAIA playoffs.

Beckman began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Auburn in 1988. While working with the Tigers' defensive backs, he was awarded his master's degree in education.

Beckman's first full-time job came in 1990 at Western Carolina, where he served as secondary coach and recruiting coordinator.

Beckman left Western Carolina after the 1996 season to become defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Elon. He was there just one full season before moving on to Bowling Green as secondary coach and recruiting coordinator. <!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE -->

He was named defensive coordinator in 2002 and assistant head coach in 2003.

"This gives us a really solid defensive staff," said Tressel. "With Jim Heacock (defensive line) and Luke Fickell (linebackers) on the front end and Paul Haynes (safeties) and Tim on the back end, we have four excellent coaches."

Beckman comes from a football family. His father, Dave, coached on the collegiate level (Iowa) and later was an assistant in the NFL with both the Cleveland Browns and the San Diego Chargers. He also was head coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL. The elder Beckman played his college football at Baldwin Wallace under Lee Tressel.

"Growing up in Ohio and in a coaching family, the opportunity to coach at Ohio State is a dream-come-true for me," said Beckman.

Beckman and his wife, Kimberly, have three children: Tyler, Lindsay and Alex.

In a related move, Tressel announced that wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell will assume the duties of assistant head coach.

"Darrell is a very talented coach and has done a great job for us," said Tressel. "Now, in addition to coaching, he will take on a few more administrative duties that had been handled by Jim Heacock."

Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

There?s nothing like beating old buddies, which is why Ohio State assistant coach Tim Beckman wants the Buckeyes to put a whipping on Bowling Green this afternoon in Ohio Stadium.
For years, he and BG offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa and their families have been taking vacations together. That?s because for four years Beckman and "Studs," as Beckman calls him, worked together on the BG staff before Beckman, the defensive coordinator, left in the spring of 2005 to become a defensive backs coach at OSU.
"Knowing what he?s thinking, and he knows what I?m thinking, too ? yeah, it will be strange, but it will be just like those spring games at BG, and I beat him every spring game," Beckman said, laughing. "No. ? But it is good friends, and it is a little bit different."
That?s because just three seasons ago Beckman was sitting in the visitors locker room with the Falcons. He, Studrawa and then-new BG head coach Greg Brandon put together a plan they thought could upset the defending national champion. They had knocked off Big Ten foe Purdue a couple of weeks earlier.
"We thought we could come in and really play," Beckman said. "I mean, the confidence level was there."
Had it not been for a late interception by OSU?s Will Allen, who knows how it would have turned out. OSU limped out with a 24-17 win. But so much for Bowling Green being overwhelmed.
That?s the message Beckman relayed to his OSU players this week. Even if this is a Bowling (very) Green team compared with the veteran group of 2003, the No. 1 Buckeyes can expect resolve from the Falcons.
"You tell them these kids are going to come in and they are going to try to be there in the fourth quarter (with a chance to win)," Beckman said. "You can?t take anybody for granted, because in college football today, with 85 scholarships, anybody has got a chance."
OSU coach Jim Tressel understands what must be running through Beckman?s mind.
"I?m sure it feels strange," Tressel said. "Those are some of the kids you recruited; those are some coaches you spent hours and hours of staff meetings with."
And yet, "You want to make sure that when you?re with your buddies, you win, so I?m sure there is a pride factor," Tressel said.
That?s it in a nutshell, Beckman said. He didn?t hesitate when Tressel offered him the job at OSU in 2005, even if it wasn?t as a coordinator.
"Ohio State is a dream," Beckman said. "To have an opportunity to work at Ohio State ? and then work for Jim Tressel, who is somebody I even tried to get involved with when he was at Youngstown State ? that?s something you shoot for."
So friendships aside, "I want the Buckeyes to win this game," Beckman said. "No doubt about it."

Having worked under Urban Meyer you gotta think that Coach Beckman knows the Florida Offense as good as any Defensive coach out there. I bet he's licking his chops at the chance to help with the Defensive game plan against his former boss.

One of the things Tress liked about Beckman was his familiarity with the spread Offense, since we face a number of teams each year who run that Offense. We have always seemed to do well against those teams. But the added fact that Beckman coached under Meyer is an added bonus, no doubt. He knows the X's and O's, tendancies, etc. Gotta like the hire even more as Jan. 8th approaches.

Tim Beckman, the cornerbacks coach for 2006 national champion Ohio State, will be announced either Friday or Saturday as Oklahoma State?s new defensive coordinator, sources are telling GoPokes.com. Beckman has spent the last two seasons at Ohio State after coaching the previous seven years at Bowling Green, where he was defensive coordinator for six seasons and spent two as assistant head coach.

Beckman replaces Vance Bedford, who spent the past two seasons as the Cowboys? defensive coordinator before leaving after the 2006 season.
