The concept is sound...but to call the 'winner' title town is craptastic.

The more ESPN tries to take themselves seriously as THE authority in all things sports..the more of a parody they become. I miss the days when they just broadcast the games, gave us scores and highlights....and that was it. Their forays into sports politics and 'investigative journalism' have been train wrecks...it reminds me of MTV's programming..they don't even play music videos anydamnmore...Real World my ass.

Gotta agree overall. The concept of titletown is not a bad idea at all especially right now when sports highlights are a little slower with only baseball as the major sport going on.

The "reports" they do are horrible and get played over and over. I would love to see sportscenter go back to a mainly highlight and actual news show, but that probally isn't going to happen anytime soon.

L.A. hands down. Even if you take away pro sports (the Lakers, USC :tongue2:) - UCLA smokes pretty much every other city on their own.

I like that they're doing some of these features - especially when it puts the spotlight on some places that have a great history but aren't well, New York or Boston. "Titletown" is definitely a better idea than who's the most "Now" (I'm still not sure what that's supposed to mean.)

Titletown USA? Skip it

I just turned 40, so maybe you can chalk this up to a crotchety middle-aged man, but I can't stand ESPN's contrived, self-promoting news events.
I get e-mails from ESPN public relations types, announcing so-and-so has been nominated for an ESPY, as if that's a newsworthy item.
The latest is their search for "Titletown, USA," where they selected 20 cities and they're touring around all of them this summer, holding a "Game Day"-type pep rally at each venue.
Please don't go, don't encourage them. I won't even tell you when it is (although I'm sure it's plastered all over the ESPN.com empire).

Continued.....

^^^^^ God, I totally agree. I don't hate ESPN to the extent many on this board do, and consider their sports news reporting pretty good aside from their recruiting info, a couple of their "experts" elsewhere (Mark May), and some of their editorial staff. For instance, I think their baseball coverage is by-and-large great. Buster Olney, Peter Gammons, John Kruk--love these guys (and I do miss Harold Reynolds).

That said, when they do these "special" competitions, I throw up a little bit in my mouth. The absolute bottom of the bucket was their "Who's Now" bracket-style competition, which was probably the most ill-conceived, idiotic, piece of absolute shit that I've ever seen in my life.

I can deal w/ the concept of this Title Town competition, but the fake pep rallies drive me absolutely nuts. Plus, some of their nominations are completely retarded. First, as another poster noted, including high school championships is ridiculous when you ignore the state titles won by high schools in major cities.

Also, some of the major cities included are ridiculous. Case in point was Chicago today. I love Chicago. One of my favorite cities I've ever been to, anywhere in the world. But for God's sake, if anything, Chicago is the anti-title town. I'll give them the Bull's dynasty, but other than that you had the Bears who haven't really set themselves apart by winning tons of championships; the Blackhawks (when was the last time they won anything?); the White Sox, who finally did win another one in recent years; and the Cubs. The Cubs. The team the town is known for is the Cubs. You know, the team that hasn't won a title in 100 years. Geez. Who put this stupid list together? In fact, as I'm typing this, I just witnessed Mike Ditka make his case for Chicago as Title Town by prefacing his claims with, "Chicago is a great sports town. We haven't won a lot of championships lately . . . ." And then, "Well, I don't know if I can make the case with titles we've won lately . . . ." Really, because I think winning titles is sort of what this whole thing is about. Chicago, despite being a great sports town, absolutely does not belong on this list.

I agree with several others that despite their horrible, horrible fans, LA has to be Title Town.

Here's the thread on Columbus over at ESPN.com:
ESPN - Conversations: TitleTown O-H-I-O

By the way, this little gem from a Gator fan really typifies what I experienced from UF fans while living in Central Florida for the past 3 years:

ThebautChaffin (4 days ago) Report Violation
There is no way in hell that Columbus should be in the running for this. last time i checked they have lost the last 2 times they have been in the Football Championship, and the last time they were in the Basketball Championship. The title they won in 02 was a joke. No way they should be in this. GO GATORS!!!!!!

A Florida Gator fan is actually unaware that college football was played before the 1990s. He has no idea who Archie Griffin or Vic Janowicz are, let alone Les Horvath, though he does have a vague memory of some guy named Eddie George that was alright. In fact, he doesn't realize that Steve Spurrier initially made a name for himself not as a head coach, but, providing the only tidbit of quasi-tradition the program can claim, as a Heisman-winning QB. The typical UF fan hasn't actually been outside of SEC-country to see a game because, well, his team doesn't really leave SEC country for games. Thus, the Swamp is the greatest stadium in college football and the Gators are the most storied program in college football history.

Totally agree about Chicago. That was a total joke. That'd be like putting Cleveland in this thing. 1990s Bulls = 1950s/early '60s Browns, and then the rest is just a bunch of crap and disappointments.

I am glad they put the spotlight on Stanford and Palo Alto for a day though. I think that was well deserved and that's the aspect of this whole contrived exercise that redeems it.

ESPN has changed, because the nature of news has changed. In the past, the only way you could get the scores of the games was to watch ESPN. No, you can follow games real time on the net - maybe even listen to play by play of your favorite team no matter where you live. There is no reason to watch Sportscenter anymore. Heck, you can even watch highlights on the internet. The only reason is for commentary...and for stupid specials.

Or to watch funny anchors. But they've left. Now, you left trying to figure out what Stuart Scott is trying to say.

CHICAGO!! Home of the greatest athlete EVER!! Michael Jordan!! If not for Jerry Krause and Jerry Reinsdorf, we might have won 10 titles in a row. We also got the 85 Bears, we got the Cubs, we got the Wolves, and we got the Blackhawks charging strong with the death of cheap-skate owner dollar Bill. The White Sox and their 2005 WS title don't count, b/c Reinsdorf owns them
