Tom Herman (Head Coach FAU Owls)

Unless USC/UCLA came open, I'm not sure there will be a more attractive job opening for a mid-major coach. Despite the texas craziness, the difficulty of winning there is noticeably lower than many places. It certainly beats LSU (unless Saban retires soon).
If the difficulty to win is so much lower, than what has been the problem with Strong? Who was a very good coach at a lower tier school in Louisville.

There's a pretty big problem that would take awhile to discuss (and possibly break forum rules for sub forum location).

He's also a defensive coach in a high flying offensive league.

And Herman could definitely fail. Or he could have another year like this one at Houston and miss his window for a rare leap from non power-5 to blue blood, destination job.

I know I haven't been following football as long as many of you on this board, but going back to early 90's, what major success has Texas had outside of McCoy and Young?
Pretty much none... That's why I say Herman should stay put in Houston and ask for a raise.

But is the leap worth it, is my question? If the choices are UT, ND and LSU, then why take the headache as coach of any of those programs who have out of touch fan bases and boosters who expect an NC by year 3? If it's all about money, then ok. But if you know that you can win the AAC, play in a NY6 bowl one year, and if you dominate in that league again, you give the boosters a hard decision to make to put you in the CFP, you have little pressure if you have an off year(say 7-8wins). You can create leverage to get your salary increased to $4+mil, and be worshiped in a major city, and still be able to pull top talent from around the Houston area. Seems like a win win, for me.

Texas has as much tradition and history as we do. A quick search and Texas was the only program in the country that won at least 10 games every season from 2001 to 2009. That is pretty strong. They claim 9 National Titles. They have the third most wins in NCAA history. They have 53 bowl appearances which ranks 2nd in the nation.

I would consider Texas one of the top 6 jobs in the country. Mack Brown used to say the hardest part about recruiting at Texas was deciding which Texas kids you were going to tell No to. At one time, they literally landed the top 20 players from the state every year. If you can bring in the top 20 kids from Texas every year, there is absolutely ZERO reason you shouldn't be a top 10 team year in and year out.

Just look what Herman has done with just the Houston talent. I don't care if he recruited them or they were there before he got there, he is winning with just the Houston kids for the most part.

Coaching make s huge difference in college football. Just look at Harbau. Dick Rod and Hoke couldn't touch what Harbrau has done in no time at all. Urban would win immediately wherever he went in the country, ie see Utah and BGSU.

Herman cannot fail at Texas, it would be impossible for him to fail as good as he is.

Yes, UT has tradition, but in the last 20yrs, its Ricky Williams, Vince and Colt, and that's it. In that same time span, there's no way can tOSU football be narrowed down into 3 names. When Mack was there, he only had to worry about Stoops and OU stealing recruits. Nowadays, UT is battling TCU, Baylor and TAMU who have all had a resurgence, to go along with OU and Ok St. Not to mention schools nationally pick off players from TX now as well. The last class where Mack could get the top 20 or so players was around 2012 or 2013, no longer does UT have the same prestige. They're the arrogant school, in a cool city, with an even more arrogant set of boosters and alum who think that they should be in the same breath of Bama, tOSU, etc. But if you look further into your search, they're not. They are closer to Wisky or Nebraska than tOSU. A school who can win 9-10 wins(because they will beat the cupcakes and win against the bad Big 12 bottom feeders) but is not on the elite level annually. What Herman has done at UH is equivalent to what Strong did at Louisville, and he did a damn good job there. And Strong was the hot name who would turn UT around at one as well... Mack left UT in a very big hole since he pretty much gave up the last 3yrs that he was there. If Herman were hired he'd need at least 5yrs to turn them around. They barely gave Strong 3, and he had to clean house, recruit and coach. If Herman wants that headache, than more power to him, but don't be surprised if he's in the same boat as Strong in 3yrs...

Let's not forget that it isn't only Herman who has some coaching experience at Austin.
The same offensive coordinator that Herman has right now is the same guy who was the UT QB that was just a straight baller (I hated that guy with the passion)...

I say go to LSU. A premier conference, fertile recruiting grounds AND most importantly, the least insane, entitled, delusional fanbase...by far. On top of that, they always seem to be just a QB away from being serious contenders and Herman might know a thing or two about how to fix that.

Oh, and a chance to knock Saban down a peg or two year after year.

Oh, and he gets to snub the elitist pricks of Texas and ND.

Personally, I think staying at Houston is a better move than going to Texas. LSU isn't bad but competing with Saban is difficult year after year and who knows how long he'll be there. Probably a few years at most but still difficult to compete year after year. ND is also a dumpster fire but you know your job is safe losing a couple games a year and not being fired(Brian Kelly still there) building Houston to a premier program nationally and getting more expereince at a lower level could be beneficial to Herman and once Meyer retires he's ready to be the next coach at tOSU. It's a long shot.

no less delusional than Osu, Ala, uf, FSU, Tenn or most top programs.

What higher / better job do you envision him securing by waiting ?

It's a win if you want to stay in Houston. It's a huge gamble if you want a destination job. There are two premiere ones available now.

Which is important, because Major Applewhite left UT in 2013 after it was discovered he'd been tapping some student ass while coaching there.

I'm not sure the University would allow Herman to bring him back.
