Tom Herman (Head Coach FAU Owls)

I'll say one other thing. Any new white coach is going to have to understand that he'll have to turn things around by early in his 3rd season or there is going to be an absolute political [Mark May]storm at UT, in Austin and nationally as to why Strong was dead man walking by October of his third year but the white guy is being given a longer leash.

There is so much that's dysfunctional with that school and athletic department that transcends any tradition or recruiting advantages to the job.

I don't think so on the white guy thing, at least not in the sense of a huge turnaround being required. Strong has barely been above 500, which is simply ridiculous, but I don't think that he's left the cupboard bare. Get to 8-9 wins and show some on-field purpose and discipline by year 3, which really shouldn't be as tough as Strong has made it look, and you get more time. There's also an eye test: Cooper was 8-4 in 2000 and Tressel was 7-5 in 2001 but it was still obvious that progress in the form of on-field discipline and toughness was being made (and of course he got the huge win in AA). In year 3, Strong's Texas is still a hot mess that can look pretty darn good one minute and then like undisciplined incompetent idiots the next.

I agree that the athletic department is a mess.

If you are in Texas at UT, you are SUPPOSED TO have a top 10 class.

Know who else had perennial top 10 classes?

Georgia, Auburn, LSU, and USC.

All but Auburn have fired coaches in the last few years.

You should probably not quote class rankings when it doesn't change the outcome on the field...
That is my entire point. At Texas you are pretty much guaranteed a top 10 class year in and year out. Hence a major reason UT is a premier job.

To say otherwise is odd to me. UT is a top job for this very reason and as soon as they get a coach like Herman they will be a force every year, just like an Urban OSU, a Saban Bama, a harbrau ichigan, or a Carroll USC.

Not sure that should be one of their aspirations.

Any coach who is lightening in a bottle and doesn't want the Tejas job isn't going to be the guy who lights the word on fire and takes your mid-major program from nowhere to getting national attention. If he's not confident enough that he can make it work at Tejas... right or wrong... this is about his confidence... then I don't want him on my sidelines.

i get what you're saying about Texas, but if you're Herman and have your choice of multiple schools. ear that level, do you want any part of that place.

it's not lack of confidence that would lead him elsewhere. it's the bullshit that comes with that job that turns people away.

Not convinced that there's more bull[Mark May] there than at other big programs.

I didn't used to think so but I'm wondering anymore

Two things are certain;

  1. Coaching is a tight fraternity
  2. Strong is an Urban guy so you know Herman is going to know exactly what the hell he's getting himself into before he makes a decision

You could add a third thing, Herman is a smart Mfer and armed with all the facts will probably make a smart decision

really?

the moment strong was hired the big money boosters blasted the hire all over national tv.
then went out of their way to have the AD removed and a puppet put in his place so they get their way.

other than Auburn, name another school where the boosters are actually running the joint publicly.

yeah there's bullshit everywhere. but at Texas, the bullshit is deeper than it is in the Vatican.

Agreed in spades about taking the job. My example was about being interested in it. That said, my example included only one alternative. Nash-equilibrium where someone else _takes_ Tejas would be fine by me.
