Tom Herman (Head Coach FAU Owls)

no less delusional than Osu, Ala, uf, FSU, Tenn or most top programs.

What higher / better job do you envision him securing by waiting ?

It's a win if you want to stay in Houston. It's a huge gamble if you want a destination job. There are two premiere ones available now.
Only difference with OSU, Bama, and FSU is that they have actually won NCs recently, and have won conference titles recently. UT's last Big 12 title was in 2009... Out of the list Tenn is the only fan base as delusional who can only hang their hats on past accomplishments.

Idk of a higher or better job, but right now there's no problem with UH. And I don't know if he wants a destination job or not. That is a valid point. He very well could, and if that's the case, good luck at UT, because he'll need it!

UT has 31 guys on NFL rosters this year. How many schools have more? Not that many. Just because you only know McCoy, Young, and Williams doesn't mean they haven't had a ton of talent go through UT.

Most kids in Texas grow up wanting to play for the Longhorns, just like most in Ohio. Texas is easily one of the top 3 if not top 2 states to recruit in the country. If Herman goes to UT and starts winning, TCU, Baylor, Houston, OU, and all of the other schools will have somewhere between Nil and Zero chance of pulling the top guys away from UT.

I would love to see a poll of actual coaches that named the top coaching jobs in the country. I can't imagine there would be many in front of UT. What would they be? USC, ND, Bama. That may be it. They have a tradition like few others. I can recall when Alabama was a bottom feeder in the SEC that wasn't exactly a powerhouse conference either. Saban came to town and look the fuck out. All UT needs is the right guy and Strong wasn't it. Just like Dick Rod, Tyrone Willingham, Mike Shula, Fat Charlie, and Ron Zook.

If the choices are UT, ND and LSU, then why take the headache as coach of any of those programs who have out of touch fan bases and boosters who expect an NC by year 3?

one of those 3 schools is a lot closer to making a run than the others are.
LSU already has a roster loaded with talent and a really damn good defense. they're a semi-competent offense away from being a legit threat.

if they were capable of scoring at all this year, they're in the playoff hunt.
instead we have 4 losses, fired one coach, and about to show the interim the door as well (i hope).

Which is important, because Major Applewhite left UT in 2013 after it was discovered he'd been tapping some student ass while coaching there.

I'm not sure the University would allow Herman to bring him back.
He'll never be allowed back while Bev Kearny is still alive... - female track coach fired for relationship with a player... similar to Applewhite ... the lawsuit was dismissed I believe but he's tainted goods for Tejas

And yet, somehow, they're like Hillary on election night and never end up the juggernaut that they're expected to be on paper. They haven't strung three AP top 10 season in a row together since the late 60s. They went missing for pretty much the entire 80s and 90s. There's something at work here.

Now, throw in the absolute shitshow that are the big money boosters, a situation every coach in the country is aware of after Strong's hiring and tenure, and I think more coaches would have that place farther down the list than you might think. When an organization keeps failing and keeps blaming it on "hiring the wrong people," the problem usually ends up with the organization and not all those hired and fired people.

Don't forget the time suck (money pit of ESPN) of LHN

This means jack and s**t in today's college football, my friend. If you hadn't noticed, kids are more wired to worry about their social media feeds, some stupid new "challenge" that's out there (see the #unameitchallenge for the latest one), or other things. Tradition is furthest from their minds.

If UT were such a great coaching job, Saban would've bent over backwards for the reported $10m they were offering him. He barely batted an eyelash. They settled on Strong, and they knew it and so did he. UT tradition means absolutely nothing, kids in Texas do not grow up wanting to play for UT anymore. They want to play for a team that will get them immediate PT and/or a winning program. You can get immediate PT at UT, but will be laughed at as a has been program. If not for all the rapes at Baylor, they would be years ahead of UT now, not to mention TCU and aTM have both passed up UT for popularity in state.
And the fact that you only can associate 3 guys to such a "storied" program should tell you a lot! Without those 3 they would be closer to Texas Tech...
And let's not even bring up the terrible LHN which was a disaster from the start. This program isn't at all what it's cracked up to be

I'll say one other thing. Any new white coach is going to have to understand that he'll have to turn things around by early in his 3rd season or there is going to be an absolute political shitstorm at UT, in Austin and nationally as to why Strong was dead man walking by October of his third year but the white guy is being given a longer leash. And UT is not ND; they won't simply tell the outside world to go fuck themselves and award the white guy an extension.

There is so much that's dysfunctional with that school and athletic department that transcends any tradition or recruiting advantages to the job.

I don't think it matters one bit. They kept him for 5 years after they learned about it. he was disciplined for it in 2009, It was disclosed to the public in 2013 in the wake of the Kearny scandal, and he didn't technically leave until 2014 when Strong took over.

So Texas isn't all that and the Texas kids don't really want to attend UT anymore?

Class Ranking according to Scout
2016 - 3rd
2015 - 7th
2014 - 15th
2013 - 23rd
2012 - 1st
2011 - 3rd
2010 - 3rd
2009 - 6th
2008 - 16th
2007 - 3rd
2006 - 3rd

Those classes are pretty much comprised of all Texas kids. I am not going to take the time to add up all of the other Texas schools combined, AM, Baylor, Tech, TCU, but there is a good chance all of them combined have not had as many 4 and 5 stars as UT each year. A&M has only been ranked higher 2 times in the past 10 years.

It is laughable to think UT is not a premier coaching job and that they are going to get out recruited by TCU and Baylor. Do a quick Google on "best college coaching jobs" and there is a consensus that Texas is one of the best jobs in the country and several publications I saw had it #1.

We will see if Herman takes it or not, and if he doesn't, if they get a "big" name coach or some joe schmoe.

If you are in Texas at UT, you are SUPPOSED TO have a top 10 class.

Know who else had perennial top 10 classes?

Georgia, Auburn, LSU, and USC.

All but Auburn have fired coaches in the last few years.

You should probably not quote class rankings when it doesn't change the outcome on the field...

While I agree that there is HUGE risk for Herman (or anyone) taking over a program like Tejas, I don't know that I want a head coach who doesn't want that job.

... and that's the problem that a school like Houston or any mid-major will forever have. You get a coach... not a great coach... and he stays. He stays a LONG time. You stay a mid-major and don't really challenge the P5 for anything. OR you go out and buy a bottle of lightning like Herman at a discount price because he's an up and coming coordinator. He lights the world on fire and takes your mid-major program from UofMiami like attendance to a full stadium for every home game in two years. He builds a sense or pride in the team and community within your school as for _once_ everyone has something to cheer about.

The down side? He's likely to bolt to the next big opportunity... and especially if it's a destination job like Tejas. Any coach who is lightening in a bottle and doesn't want the Tejas job isn't going to be the guy who lights the word on fire and takes your mid-major program from nowhere to getting national attention. If he's not confident enough that he can make it work at Tejas... right or wrong... this is about his confidence... then I don't want him on my sidelines.

Just like Urb talks about wanting a kid who will choke you over a game of checkers... it starts at the top... and it starts with confidence in his system.

And I'd apply that line of thinking to just about every one of the top 20% of P5 schools... with the exception of State Penn and now maybe Baylor. Those are situations that have issues way beyond football on which moral ground could be cited as a reason for not taking.

My $0.02.
