Game Thread tOSU at Illinois, Nov 16, 12 ET, ESPN

1. There were five big scoring plays in the game, four by Ohio State (Hyde's two runs, Miller's run, and Roby's pick six) and one by Illinois (the punt return). Take out those five plays, and the score would have been 33-28. Here's another way to look at it: Illinois was four mistakes away from winning the game. I understand that good teams make big plays, but the Buckeyes needs to be more consistent in all phases of the game.
So take away our long touchdowns AND just give Illinois the ball?

Mistakes by Illinois or the Buckeyes executing?

I can see the case for the pick 6 being a mistake (since it was tipped), but that occurred due to pressure & CJ/Roby making nice plays. Not sure I can agree on the other 3 being mistakes.

Even if they were.....let's pretend Illinois doesn't make those "mistakes". They don't get the ball. We still get to run more plays.

I laugh at those who nitpick about if the Illini didn't make their mistakes.. they would have won. If the Bucks didn't make their mistakes, Buckeyes would have blown them out worse. So it is what it is. Look tOSU has an injury riddled defense right now. Illinois is lucky they caught the Bucks when they did.

The two negatives were.
1. Braxton can't pass in Champaigne Urbana.
2. Not enough press coverage in windy conditions where short timing routes are the norm.

Big positive.. Hyde is still a beast at running back.
Why wasn't Dontre Wilson played more?

A few thoughts....

i refuse to 'take out' those five plays. the plays happened. they count. the outcome of the game was never in doubt.
if your aunt had balls, she'd be your uncle.

Sorry, I was trying to make a point while in a hurry to get to a family function, and was answering a direct question about what I meant in my use of the word "discount" in regard to late in the game scores or statistics.

Different models use different criteria and usually they treat those criteria as proprietary data. I referred very clearly to "offensive statistics" which could include scores. My point is that, as margin of victory and scores are completely discounted in the BCS models, models may still place lower weightings on other criteria such as rushing yards late in the game to limit the rewards of running up the score.

I strongly resent it when people misrepresent things like this or create straw men in arguments, as is well known on this board. I hope that my meaning is now clear.
