Game Thread tOSU @ Indiana, Sat 10/3 @ 3:30p ET, ABC/ESPN2

Now that I ave had some sleep for the alcohol to get out of my system. I've come to agree with the post game presser. If we don't turn the ball over 3 times that is a blowout. I feel good about the talent right now. For all the [Mark May] we gave cardale he was 18/27 for 245. That's a 67% completion rate. We gave him [Mark May] for every bad pass, but this is college and 67% is really freaking good. Zeke is a monster and the line is shaping up. Mental mistakes can be cleaned up. 100+ yds in penalties and turnovers are the problem. Everything we saw bad out there can be fixed. This game showed a lot more promise than the last few weeks. It just looks like nerves out there especially in the red zone and once the OCs hit a rhythm this team could be unstoppable.
While I get what ur saying but this has been many people's thoughts after most of our last four games. "Well if this doesn't happen then it's a rout" but it did happen and it's continued to happen this is who we are it seems.

I also think Dontre Wilson is our hardest working buckeye not named Zeke on offense. His hustle to stop that pick 6, watch him sprint down field to block for zeke on his 3rd and 2 play, he looks great on special team returns, hasn't turned the ball over and last week busted his ass to sprint in front of Marshall to block for his on a punt (blocking a kid twice his size no less).

I for one think he deserves more PT.

The issue is that Jones is a turnover machine. It's not that his completion percentage is bad, it's that when his throws are off they usually amount in turnovers. 67% is awesome, but he has given the ball away in every game he has started (minus Wisconsin) and has issues in the redzone.

As much as I'm troubled by the inability of the offense to find that top gear they had in the playoffs, it could be worse. We're undefeated, ranked number one, and we do move on to the next round robin. Am I wrong, Dude? Meanwhile in Austin, they've broken out the bag.

We struggle with identity because we don't have one. The coaching staff has had to rearrange the entire offensive attack and typical game style because #ArmCannon. This isn't a slight on Jones, it's what the coaching staff wants. The problem is that there has been no sighting of #ArmCannon against any opponent this season - to include the likes of Hawaii and a directional school. No one fears Jones passing except the coaching staff in the fourth quarter...

I think we've passed the point of seeing JT start (outside of injury or losses). It's like when you buy something, waiver on whether or not you like it, decide you arent sold on it but are stuck with it because you've passed the time limit on returning it. That's where we're at. Jones is the QB. The team will have to make him better and hope the turnovers get better.

It's not that we don't have an Identity for this years team, it's because it is a different team.

At first I thought that they were either unwilling to let Jones check out of a bad play or he was unable to do so.

I'm talking about 1st quarter, going right to left on the screen and pinned inside the 20 when they just kept running into 8+ man fronts.
I saw this again in the 4th quarter and what Cunningham was saying about the coaches not trusting Jones to throw in that exact same position on the field made a lot of sense

The thing that I am wondering now, without the benefit of re-watching the game yet, is I think I saw IU get pined in that same area for a stretch of the game and all of a sudden become just as one dimensional, predictable and ineffective.

So my question/theory is; was the wind just so bad that neither coaching staff was willing to throw down in that end?

Last year's team struggled at Minnesota, struggled at home against a depleted Indiana team and didn't pull away from Michigan until halfway through the final quarter. How many of us thought that team, minus their #1 and #2 QBs, would lay more 59 on Wisconsin?
Maybe but I've seen absolutely no indication whatsoever that this team will return to that form. At least 2014 had several games where they consistently looked like the best offense in the country. Right now I've lost complete faith that the offense will ever return to that form and I'm blaming that on coaching. To have an offense go from the juggernaut it was most of last year to what it is now despite 90% of the offense players returning points almost exclusively to coaching. Some of the worst offensive coaching I've ever seen to be frank. No way should our offense look THIS inept after 5 weeks.

No reason at all systemid. There's so many things that could be wrong with our team. A glaring issue to me is CJ in the red zone because if we can turn our 3s in 7s that'll go a long way in giving us some much needed rhythm and confidence. I just don't know if CJ in tight spots were we rely on accuracy and timing to score touchdowns is going to work. I'd rather put Braxton in and be obvious we are running than to see another freaking pass sail into the stands.

Isn't it odd that they scream at CJ to "throw is away" if it ain't there. To me that says we trust you for one read but after that we don't. So many red flags to me that says this is a square peg and a round hole in regards to CJ fitting this offense.

Side note if you turn the ball over multiple times in this offense you shouldn't see the field. We have enough talent itching for more reps that we can stand to reduce Marshalls touches in order to get Dontre more who deserves them.

If UFM loves the psychology of things this would be a good route for him. It's simple you reward hustle and you penalize those who put the team in bad spots with turnovers.

Once again they scored 10 (maybe 17) points off of our turnovers. Don't play those who can't handle the ball

If you thought that OSU with Cardale at the helm was going to pick up where he left off at the end of last season, I can understand you are frustrated. That is what I expected originally. But what I have come to understand is that Cardale just completed his 8 start. I believe number 8 was significantly better than numbers 6 and 7.

The Good
As others have stated he was 18 of 27 for 245. More importantly, he started checking down to his outlet when he could not find a down field receiver. Could he have done better going through his 2nd and 3rd reads? It hard to tell without seeing film that shows the receivers, but my guess would be yes. But that is something that should get better as the game slows down for him with more experience. He did not force as many throws into tight windows as he did in previous games and when he did, he put it a place that only his receiver had a chance on the ball. (Actually the one I am thinking about even Vannett did not have a really good chance but the point remains the same)

The Bad
On 1 drive he missed first Thomas and then Marshall costing the team 4 points (settled for a FG). I am actually less critical of the Thomas pass because my recollection is that he had a rusher in his face and could not set his feet properly. But on the ball to Marshall, thats was just a plane old miss as he was not under pressure and Marshall had a step. Does anyone not believe the narrative changes if he hits 1 of these 2.
The interception-Not seeing the linebacker dropping into coverage was bad and it did lead a swing in momentum. But I have a hard time believing Indiana would have scored off of it without the worst non called penalty as Simmie Cobb pushed Conley to the ground on Diamonte's wounded duck on the very next play.

That means that IMO Cardale was responsible for leaving 4 points on the field. And if you are going to blast him for that you need to consider the following

Marshall's first fumble- Cost at least 3 and possible 7 points.

Braxton's penalty-Cost 7 points (FG hit the upright)

Without these 2 mistakes we go into halftime up 16-10 and maybe 20-10

Marshall's 2nd fumble- Combined with a timely WR to QB throw back cost 3 points

Powells "criminally bad" angle on Diamonte's 79 yard run- Cost 7 points

Combine these 2nd half mistakes with those in 1st half and we are at 44-17 or 48-17.

My point is that there were a lot of players that allowed yesterdays game to play out as it did.

And to those that would reply that the coaching staff did not "trust Cardale" to throw in the 4th quarter, my response is really, an OSU fan is complaining that the coaching staff made a decision to play Tresselball in the 4th quarter on a cold and windy October Saturday when their All American running back is ripping off long TD runs one after the other. Really.

The field looked like a greasy ice rink. If that was so then why were we running sideways so much? Conditions had an effect. The wind? I couldn't tell from the TV.
The adjustments at half time made a big difference and give the coaches credit for that.
The QBs? Maybe JT is just not fully recovered, yet. Maybe Urban thinks Cardale is the better stretch the field option for this team.
But injuries to the WR corp are starting to effect everything.
How much help are the WRers, other than Thomas, giving the QB?
It seems like Cardale is yelling at them a lot.
We really need Paris Campbell back. But maybe we see more of Hill, Dixon and/or McLaurin soon.
Maryland has no offense so that should be a "W".
Ped State looks like another defensive struggle. Glad it's at home.

As was pointed out, we struggled last year. And the defense wasn't as good as right now.
The kicking game looks better.
So, if we can slow down the turnovers we have a winning formula.
I heard that historically, Urban's teams tend to turn over the ball a bit.
Is it just me or does Michael Thomas look like he's open on just about every play?
