2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Not disagreeing with you, because who's to say, but...

This is the same guy (Ryan Day) who was down 14-0 in the 2nd half at Wisconsin, was staring at the business end of a 4th-and-9 from his own 26 yard line, and had the balls to run a fake punt! I'd venture to say it's the same "I'll show them..." attitude.

So... yeah... he can't win 'em all. But I'd still take my chances with this approach. He's taking risks, to be sure. But I think he is taking calculated risks.

No question. Love Day and love the attitude.

Just observing that this one might not have been his best moment. He's human, it's going to happen.

Freshmen receivers grab 20 touchdowns next season
Based on potential and recruiting rankings, the four wide receiver signees on the way for Ohio State look like the best group in school history — and Julian Fleming, Gee Scott, Jaxon Scott-Njigba and Mookie Cooper won’t have to wait long to start proving it. With Ohio State watching four seniors head out the door, there is plenty of opportunity waiting for the touted targets walking into the Woody Hayes Athletic Center to replace them next season. Based on how quickly Garrett Wilson was able to unleash his five-star ability under Brian Hartline, and using his five touchdowns as a guide, it should be within reach for the freshmen to get to double-digit scores in a hurry. From that group, the early pick is for Julian Fleming to lead the way with some physical tools that suggest he could follow in the footsteps of Michael Thomas for the Buckeyes.

This seems to be concerning to me along with RB and CB recruiting this cycle.

It’s just a very lopsided top 5 class I guess in terms of positional weighting.

Eh only concern would be DE (IF WE DIDN’T HAVE LJsr), as most of the guys end up playing to their rankings it seems ... I believe historically if you look OL is a freakin crapshoot with just as many 3* guys being good/great as 4*/5* guys...DTs i’m not sure about

I'd want to see it over a 3-4 year rolling average to smooth out the one year spikes for when you have varying positional needs.

If that view has OSU being lapped by anyone then yeah, I would be concerned.

Right...because Ohio State had 9 4/5 star OL/DL in the 2018 class. 5 last year. It’s looking like the 2021 class will be one of those where OSU signs 7+ more.

And then go look at Clemson from last year. They had TWO! The way OSU is recruiting its going to go from Bosa to Hubbard to Bosa to Young to Smith to Harrison to Sawyer.....nothing wrong with that!

One superstar frosh catches 5, and it means that the incoming 4 will also catch 5 each?

That math does not check out.

May I present my wish for the conclusion of this class.

1 or 2 (if Wade leaves) portal DB's. The list of candidates will expand after bowl season. The caveat is that they are eligible next year.

A portal TB with speed and wiggle. I'm not counting on McCall. Teague, Chambers, Cowley are nice but strike me as downhill brutes.
I have posited Blacksheer from Rutgers would be ideal.

Not entirely certain how the total numbers will shake out, what with 3 (?) players coming back for a sixth year. Mayhap that more than the obvious juniors declare, or that some more athletes go the transfer portal route. Or maybe the staff winnows out the kids that aren't going to get minutes in the next season. Those are the things that make the coaches earn their money. Glad it's them and not me. This year's RB recruiting accentuates that one can never rest (two 'silent' commits) that went elsewhere. Sounds like tOSU stand pretty well with some big time RBs, but there were some kids that had tOSU very high early on, but ended up being swayed to teams in the south (Breese, and the MLB from DC for example). The portal is an option as Cdiddy70 points out, but seems like it's gotta be a specific guy to fill a specific need, with a specific attitude. Josh and Justin fit in pretty well methinks, so maybe Day has a nice touch there as well. We'll see. But this year is a great start to Ryan Day's tenure as tOSU Head Coach. Hope he can continue to live up and expand the legacy he's started. Go Bucks!

I get all the above comments but O Line absolutely WAS a need in this class. We took 6 guys! 2 elite/great types and 4 projects. And DL is almost always a “need” and I’d argue we didn’t land anyone elite.

I know you recruit to your needs.....duh.

My point was simply that the trenches didn’t have as high of an avg ranking as I’d like to see but admittedly the O Line in particular is labeled as “hard to project talent” and that’s kinda true but Wavy Dub and Josh are examples of guys that were accurately ranked based on production and with this class, PJ sure looks to be the same.

I’d just like to have seen a few higher ranked O Line guys that’s all and maybe one great/elite D Line guy but maybe that will be one of Cowan, Henry, Hamilton....will see. I just know that the Bosa’s, Chase Young, Smith, and Harrison show that rankings do matter.

We needed OL in a big way and time will tell how good the class really was.

This class, while desperately needing O Line depth and needing normal D Line depth didn’t have a lot of star power outside of Luke and PJ that’s all.
