2024 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I think the staff is going to want to see the OH kids up close in at camp. But I also would like to see more offers go out, it seems to be a solid year for talent in state for ‘24. Heck, outside of Moore and Seaton, I can see 3-4 more OL sign with OSU(with the St. Eds twins being 2). They could also sign all OH players at RB, CB and TE
Yup, if you’re in state, show up to camp for an offer.
Grover like the other listed OH players will have to earn an offer at camp. It has been stated multiple times on BP, and Birm and AG have also stated the same.

We've already been in contact since the hire,"
Payton Pierce told DTEjust before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27. "I talked to [Laurinaitis] the most of any coaches from Notre Dame. He's one of the favorite guys I've met in the recruiting process by far.

"[The hiring] helped [the Buckeyes] chances tremendously. I don’t know if it was by coincidence that they offered me the same week as they hired him but I’m very excited about it."
Ohio State commitment
Garrett Stover always knew, from the moment the Buckeyes offered, that he'd likely commit to Ohio State. The relationship with Laurinaitis at Notre Dame was the only thing that ever gave him pause. When Koy McFarland and Matt Guerrieri left the Buckeyes program for Tulsa, Stover had his fingers crossed that it would open a door for Laurinaitis to return to Ohio State.

"It made my freakin' day," Stover said. "It sucks [McFarland and Guerrieri] left because I loved those guys but I’ve built such a great relationship with coach Laurinaitis. I can’t wait to get coached by him. He’s an awesome dude."
Because he's a graduate assistant, Laurinaitis can't recruit off-campus for the Buckeyes. That's OK, his influence and work ethic will be felt across every level of linebacker recruiting. Long-time Ohio State target
Edwin Spillman, who already talks to Jim Knowles multiple times a week, says the addition of Laurinaitis helps him see the program in Columbus a bit differently.

"Coach L is a Buckeye legend," Spillman said. "And I'm trying to be a legend myself. It’s even crazier because he did what he did in my position.
"He is a Godly man who wants to help anyone succeed and reach their goal He's passionate about me and what I can do on the football field and I look up to him."
Note these 3 as the top LBs on the board. I can see going forward, that as long as Knowles is DC,2- 3 is the max number of LBs to commit to a class. Close them out Coach JL

I could see Stover remaining at safety, though don't think it likely with his frame and current size. Regardless, I think you take those three for sure with their talent, plus with only taking Reese in the '23 class. Cool to see the recruits already getting excited over JL already.

Has there been a recruiting shift that I've missed? (Probably!). Have always thought that only commitable offers went out to Ohio kids.....because they were wanting to jump on that offer. Now, it seems like staff is offering offers, of the non-commitable variety as well? Can visualize the offer, as "this is an offer subject to your performance at an tOSU camp this summer" or somesuch. Certainly would avoid recruit being butt-hurt because "tOSU hasn't paid me any attention". This way they'd get their attention AND an 'offer'. A small nuance, but maybe needed? Also wondering (too much idle time), can a recruit take an official (counting against allowed total), if they have a non-commitable offer? Anyone help me clear away the fog?

Under UFM that was definitely the rule on "offering" Ohio kids. I think JT was similar. With Day, there may have been a shift because I see a couple "offers" that may not be commitable...no inside knowledge there, just seems to be the case. My high-level view is that the staff chased national targets that were never going to land here, and we want the "offer" out there to some Ohio kids that would commit on the spot to make sure we have a contingency plan.

I will label this as speculation and reading tea leaves on the coaches' comments on recruiting Ohio after this last cycle, so that is just my read of the situation. But putting that aside, the Ohio classes for '24 and '25 are incredibly good compared to recent past years, so part of it is just keeping good talent in the state...I say that but really '23 was pretty darn good as well, especially at OL with Montgomery, Siereveld and Padilla, plus I think all of Mathews, Smith Jr. and Hartford are going to be studs. But in '24/'25, I am incredibly high on all of: Dorian Brew, Bryce West, Jordan Marshall, the Armstrong twins, Nave, Rudolph, Witten, Aaron Scott, Stover, Bo Jackson...there is plenty of talent in Ohio for the next couple cycles, lock down as much as we can and it will make national recruiting a sniper approach on top guys that are interested.

I would also add that quality this class is way up in areas of need so more offers are fully committable. The kids that can't make camps for whatever reason still get in the communication channels that they want with the State School. I imagine local coaching appreciates that more as well.

I guess we would have a clearer picture if we had questionable talent in Ohio this year instead of a potentially outstanding pool. Looks like RB07OSU covered that part but I think that's definitely what we're seeing also.

Sure takes a lot of the stress off the staff when you can get awesome players at home and just cherry pick nationally
