Usain Bolt (official thread of speed)

Assistant Coach
We all know what Usain Bolt did in the 2008 Beijing Olympics by running a 9.69 in the 100m, shattering the world record. Well, he did it again today at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin (no celebration before the finish line this time). His winning time: 9.58. Tyson Gay finished 2nd in a new American record time of 9.71 and 5 of the 8 finalists were under 10 seconds, 2 others right at 10 flat. Quite possibly the best race I've ever seen:

That's an amazing time - it looked like his start was OK, but not great.

I can't wait until they break out his time at the 40-yard mark. I'm guessing 4.33.

I'll disagree with his start. In the Olypmics he was in 3rd or 4th place at the 20m mark because he didn't get a great start. Today he was already ahead by that point.

As for his 40 time, video evidence that he runs a 0.0... but also evidence he is just track fast, not football fast:

It was a decent start for him, but it could have been even better. He was ahead at 20 meters, but I'd say he was behind lane 3 at 10 meters.

It's amazing that he can take more than a full tenth off the record, and not have had an ideal start.

For added context: Tyson Gay broke his own American Record today. That's no small feat considering all of the legends of 100M that have been from the U.S.

... and Usain Bolt smoked him.

I guess that's added context for anybody that didn't read all of post #1. :wink2:

vBet on how long it will take Bolt to break the 9.50 barrier...

I don't think he'll peak again until the World Championships in 2011, and who wants to tie up vCash for 2 years? :wink2:
