What is the biggest concern...

Punter, punter, and punter. We can be adequate in the punting game and still compete, but we cannot suck at it, or else we're in big trouble. We need someone who can pin it inside the 20, or someone with a big leg, or both, to emerge, but we can't have neither...or else.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Louis would say our Ks are 8th in the big ten and that our WRs are "busts", too...I mean they all don't catch 15 passes a game, so none of them have "lived up to their potential".

I will not say QB is my big concern. I will say that this year should be very exciting to see how our Buckeyes emerge from a relative abyss. We'll have a new identity.

Here's a quote I won't soon forget:

``I feel great about the way Justin Zwick has progressed,'' Tressel said. ``I thought he was ready to go in the middle of the year when Craig (Krenzel) got hurt. (Senior) Scott McMullen had the first opportunity, but really it was negligible who was ahead of whom. If it's that close, typically you're going to go with the older guy. Scott McMullen bore out that he should have had that opportunity.''

Asked what he liked most about Zwick, Tressel said, ``Great vision. He's got an awareness and a vision of what's going on out there unlike any guy I've ever been around.''

Somewhere I remember Zwick getting thrown into the NW game, 1st qtr, completing his first pass and his second laser beam got dropped by a guy. Seemed pretty good to me.

No Concerns

Every year Ohio State recruits some of the top athletes in the country and I think this year our graduating seniors opened the door for an even better team. We've got a couple of competitive games that we should win for the team to start gelling before the big road test at NC State. Win that and we push for the NC.... lose that and we learn a lesson in the push for the Big Ten Championship.

By the 3rd quarter against Cincy, you won't know Zwick is a Sophomore.

Troy Smith will give the O and outstanding change of pace.

Lydell Ross is due for a big senior year like Wells and George before him.

Brandon Joe will be the best fullback in the Big Ten.

The O-line is a ton more athletic.

Mike Kudla is opening eyes this summer - he'll be the strongest on the field.

E.J. Underwood is better than Gamble and Youboty is close.

We have at least 8 defensive linemen with great pass rush and run stop skills.

The linebackers are superior... ALL of them.

If we lose it won't be because we don't have the horses, it'll be because we don't know how to ride them.

(Did I mention our under-rated receiving corps and notice I didn't mention any incoming freshmen)

Slickman - I remember reading that quote and that is when I started seriously discounting any chances of Smith winning the starting job.

I know a lot of people are high on Underwood but to be honest, I have never seen anything to get that excited about.
Maybe some one can enlighten me as to why this guy is perceived as such a good DB. There were times when he was a freshman I thought he was really disappointing.
I think Youboty has much more upside. Again, I know the spring game may not be a great indicator of things to come but I thought Youboty was outstanding.

When a CB is a true Frosh they are ALWAYS supposed to be disappointing. That he got the PT he did from the gitgo was a very large statement by JT. He had the speed and the moves, but there is a lot to learn for a young corner and getting beat is often part of the process. However, I agree Youboty is tough. To me the biggest suprise of the Spring draft was that Youboty was drafted ahead of Underwood. I have heard that he may not have been 100% then either.

Ashland, Underwood looked extemely good his frosh year...for a frosh. He showed excellent cover skills, what he needed to work on was his understanding of the defensive schemes, and his vision. EJ's biggest problem, and it was oh-so-obvious, was his inability, or his refusal, to turn his head and look back for the ball. This is a classic mistake made by young DB's, and it usually is a result of a lack of confidence. Now that he has had a year and a half under his belt, and a full spring, summer, and autumn workout session as the number 1 CB, Underwood will amaze you.

many areas concern me...

1. The running back position...Ross has to show up this year or we will be in trouble and if he doesnt then get someone else in there.

2. The punter....we have won alot of games the last two years by playing D and pinning them back, we need someone to step up and be at least average in this department, we have to win the field position battle!

3. The Quarterback....I know both of them have talent, but its the inexperience that concerns me, I am against platooning qbs, I think by the end of the third game, a clear starter needs to be known, if not then it could be a three loss season.

4. Injuries! Injuries!.....we are thin at RB and O-Line (as far as experienced players)....we need to limit injuries (cross your fingers)

5. Heart.....the question for me is...does this group have the heart and hunger that the previous group did? We will find out in the third game on the road against a good team, with vengence on their minds.

thats my two cents....

The way I see it we know that we have quality at almost every possition. If JT did his job right the offense and defense will reload and be as good or better than they were last year. The only possition that we don't know if we have anything is punter. We have been blessed over the past few years to have great punters and now it is a huge ?. On the bright side if we don't have a great punter JT is going to have to open up the offense in order to win the field possition battle.

In a JT scheme?
Heck, it may not even be the 4th most important position in our offense.
Unless OSU switches to the Single Wing, QB is the most important position. If for no other reason than he triggers every play and directs the offense on the field. The QB distributes the ball as appropriate and is primarily responsible for not ending possessions prematurely (without a kick).
