Who will be the new coach?

Oh8ch said:
As regards Cleamons (with whom I shared at class at OSU many years ago - one in which I don't recall ever seeing him open his eyes) other than being an OSU grad is there ANYTHING that he has done to distinguish himself as a candidate?

I think that being a longtime assistant coach for the man who's won as many NBA Championships as anybody else is a pretty good thing to have on your resume.

People say, "Oh, he failed with the Mavericks". Well there's a difference between the NBA and the NCAA. Pete Carroll didn't set the world on fire in the NFL as a coach either. And then people talk about his 3 poor years at YSU. I would just say 1)it's friggin YSU 2) that was 15 years ago, before he trained under Phil Jackson and got all this other experience. JC is my second choice.

Plain and Simple, Once a Buckeye always a Buckeye...

I would like to see Bobby Knight return to Columbus and help place a stamp on this team. OSU has some good talent just need a coach to take them to the next step.

If not Bobby Knight, I think either George Karl or Laker Assistant, Jimmy Cleamons

Is this the long term solution to the BB program? He looks like a viable candidate to me. :)

From the official buckeye site:

Ohio State Interim Head Coach Rick Boyages
Opening statement:

"A year ago, I was approached by Jim O'Brien and Director of Athletics Andy Geiger, about the opportunity of leaving my head coaching position at The College of William & Mary in order to return to Ohio State. At that time, I publicly discussed my admiration for both men, as well as The Ohio State University and its athletics program.

"At noon yesterday, I was informed by Andy Geiger of the circumstances surrounding Coach O'Brien's dismissal. Andy asked me if I would assume the title of interim head coach and I accepted. As difficult as this is for me, I am extremely proud to assist the university in any way I can.

"I will continue to assure our players, the incoming recruits, and future prospects, of the great virtues of Ohio State and commit all of my energy to this basketball program. The players have worked exceptionally hard this spring and I assure you that we will continue to make progress. We're fortunate to have the country's finest facilities, tremendous administrative support, and great fans. This program will persevere.

From Terence Dials:
On whom he would like to be the new coach:
"Personally, I would like to see Coach Boyages as new head coach. He has been with Coach O'Brien. He knows the system. He knows us personally. That would be a great fit for us. As far as what Andy Geiger wants, I don't know."

I think this is the next OSU coach.
The Crestline native is refusing to comment on whether he has been contacted about the job.
He's relatively young, an Ohio guy and has done a fine job at Alabama.
I think he's the obvious choice.

Stallings is a good coach and he truly has turned dog crap into diamonds at Vandy. I wouldn't mind seeing him in C-bus - he could do some good things for the Bucks, and it would take him out of the SEC.:wink2: Stallings is not a fluke candidate like you may think. He interviewed with OSU last go 'round in '97 when he was with Illinois State, and apparently Geiger liked what he heard back then, and still likes what he sees.

Could be jlb...he might be OK. I just remember when Gary Nord was on everyone's short list for a football coach after his one co-championship at UTEP too...and ended up getting fired 2 or 3 years later. Vandy had some decent teams before Stallings got there (though von Breda Whatever had definitely worn out his welcome) so I guess I'm just not as convinced as I'd like to be.

That's understandable. With the way Geiger has handled this though, I don't think you can read much more into this other than the fact that OSU is indeed looking at Stallings. This process doesn't seem to be anywhere near over, and if Stallings does end up in C-bus he will have had to prove his worth against several other highly qualified candidates.

Buckeyes interview two candidates, have third on radar

Ohio State could be narrowing its field for a men's basketball coach after interviewing two candidates Tuesday and likely scheduling another today.

Rice coach Willis Wilson told the Houston Chronicle he met Tuesday with OSU Athletic Director Andy Geiger, and an NBA source said Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jim Cleamons also met with Geiger at an undisclosed location in Dallas.

That leaves Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings next on Geiger's list after OSU gained permission to speak with him late last week.

It appears Rutgers' Gary Waters has backed out of the search in the wake of his athletic director, Bob Mulcahy, denying Ohio State's request to speak with the former Kent State coach.

Wilson is coming off a career-best 22-11 season at Rice, where he is 169-175 (.491) in a 12-year career, with no NCAA Tournament appearances.

"It was a really good meeting," Wilson told the Chronicle after speaking with Geiger. "But there's a process involved and they're going to go through that process."

Like Wilson, Stallings' record is unlikely to generate much excitement among OSU faithful who hoped for a big-name hire like Texas Tech's Bob Knight, Marquette's Tom Crean or Xavier's Thad Matta.

Stallings was considered to be coaching for his job last year at Vandy, when he entered the final year of a five-year contract just three games over .500 at 62-59.

The Commodores' 23-10 finish and trip to the Sweet 16 put Stallings back in Vandy's good graces, but university officials made signing their baseball coach to a contract extension a higher priority.

Stallings still doesn't have a new deal in place and is thought to be ardently pursuing the OSU job. He finished second to Jim O'Brien for the job seven years ago.

O'Brien was fired June 8 for arranging a $6,000 payment to a former recruit.
