WR Bam Childress (official thread)

Bam! Just like that, he’s gone: Childress cut for castoff

Say bye to Bam.

The Patriots yesterday released scrappy wide receiver Bam Childress and claimed wideout Jonathan Smith, who was released by the Buffalo Bills.

Childress was a fan favorite during the preseason, leading the Patriots with 214 yards and finishing second with 11 catches. He recorded a number of big plays, including a tumbling 42-yard catch against the New York Giants in the preseason finale when he caught six passes for 116 yards.

An undrafted free agent out of Ohio State, Childress spent 15 games on the practice squad last year before being activated for the season finale against the Dolphins, playing both wideout and defensive back.

Unless he’s claimed by another team, Childress will certainly be signed to the practice squad.

Smith, 24, is entering his third NFL season. The 5-foot-10, 194-pounder has played in 16 games since being selected in the seventh round of the 2004 draft by Buffalo. He has eight catches for 77 yards. His career highlight came on Nov. 14, 2004, when he returned a punt 70 yards against the Pats at Gillette Stadium in a 29-6 loss.

Smith has limited return experience, taking back six kicks for 152 yards (25.3 average) and 15 punts for 198 yards (13.2).

Smith’s acquisition leaves the wide receiver corps revamped. With veteran Deion Branch continuing his holdout while he awaits a grievance hearing, Smith joins a group that includes Doug Gabriel, just acquired from the Raiders, veteran Troy Brown, rookie Chad Jackson and free agent Reche Caldwell.

Colts sign Klecko

Former Patriots defensive end Dan Klecko, cut on Saturday, signed yesterday with the Indianapolis Colts.

Klecko’s best moments this summer came as a situational defensive lineman in 4-3 sets. He’s smaller (5-11, 275) and quicker than the average defensive lineman, which makes him a good fit for Indy’s speed-heavy 4-3.

More practice

The Patriots signed six players to the practice squad: guard Billy Yates, guard/center Dan Stevenson, wide receiver Kelvin Kight, cornerback Antwain Spann, inside linebacker Corey Mays and defensive end Santonio Thomas.

That leaves two spots to fill.

This really is disappointing for Bam. He looked solid in the preseason and with the Pats WR depth paper thin with their top guy holding out, an injured rookie, and an aging Vet I thought he had a sure place on the team. I would be concerned that Garbriel and Smith could pick up the offense so quickly.

aimed at the team which has won how many superbowls in the last five years?

So that automatically makes anything the personnel gurus decide correct? Last time I checked, it's the players and coaches that win games, not the personnel department. Before you say that it's the personnel department gets those players, check out how well the defensive guys the Browns traded to the Broncos are doing in Denver...same players but different coaches and different results.

Bottom line is that Bam performed as well as, if not better than, any other Pats WR during the entire preseason and he gets released for some clown who had 30 catches over two seasons...under a catch a game.

#3 wr in oakland the past two years (30 catches, 500 yds, 2.5 tds the past two years)... I love bam and think he deserved a spot, but your statement obviously applies to bam as well.

When you can explain to me how a WR can have 2.5 TDs, then I'll listen to your point...

The broncos coaching staff & system is better than the browns? Shocking! I fail to see how that refutes how well NE has done with personnel.

Childress produced nicely in the preseason, hopefully that would carry over but it definitely doesn't prove he is equal/better than Gabriel when it matters. Gabriel produced as a #3 wr during the regular season on a terrible oakland team. Apparently NE wanted Gabriel as a deep threat as well, which Childress clearly is not (at least not for jump balls).

That was his season average the past two years... thoough you would think 2.5 would give that away.

How about using English next time, as in "He averaged 30 catches, 500 yds, 2.5 tds per season the past two years"? When you say "30 catches, 500 yds, 2.5 tds the past two years", that means exactly what its says: 30 catches, 500 yards, and 2.5 TDs over the past two years (15 catches, 250 yards, 1.25 TDs per year).

I'll do my best never to leave out one word again. Thanks for the lesson. Hopefully we can get back to discussing Bam now...

you win with people.

its about getting the right people on the bus in the right seats. nobody in the nfl has been better at it than the pats the last five years. apparently bam didnt fit into the plans. hes been there over a year, they know enough about him to make the choice. best of luck to bam, hell get picked up if not hell be back on the practice squad were he can fight for his postion.

The AP reports that Bam has been promoted back to the Patriots Team from their practice squad after releasing Jonathan Smith, the receiver they signed from Buffalo just about a week ago.
