WR Bam Childress (official thread)

Childress pitches in for Pats

Childress has been on and off the Patriots' roster for the past two seasons, amassing career totals of five receptions for 39 yards. He's also displayed some of that position flexibility that so tickles the fancy of coach Bill Belichick.

In his debut game with the Patriots on Jan. 1, 2006, against the Dolphins, Childress pulled a "Troy Brown" and played both receiver and defensive back. He was credited with five tackles in that game as well as three catches.

Belichick hasn't asked Childress to play the dual role since, but you can bet that it's filed away in the back of his mind for future reference.

"Bam is a pretty strong kid for his size, kind of like Troy is," Belichick said last week of the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder from Warrensville Heights, Ohio. "He's not tall, but he's thick and he's strong and he's quick and he's versatile.

"I think there's similarities between those two players, and I know both of them have heard it from other people about their size and their height and all of that," he said. "I don't think that affects them."

Apparently, Childress (given name: Brandon) was a bit of a mischievous little tyke when he was growing up. Developing a love for "The Flintstones" on TV, he started to emulate the behavior of one of his favorite characters.

"I liked Bamm-Bamm, so that just kind of took off," said Childress, admitting that he would take after his brothers and pummel them as might the super-strong adopted son of Barney and Betty Rubble. Not surprisingly, when mom Willeen would have to scold young Brandon, it would be as "Bamm-Bamm."

"After a while," he said, "if I was bad, they'd be so mad at me it would just be, 'Bam!'"

Eventually, the home nickname made it into general use in his Ohio hometown, and the rest is history.

"That was something nobody really knew until eighth or ninth grade," he said. "Nobody really started calling me that at first. But I think I did something at the house when all my best friends were over, and when my mom called me, my friends were asking me, 'What did she just call you?'

"Ever since then, they just called me that," he said.

Childress knows that keeping his roster spot won't be easy with the likes of Moss, Stallworth, Washington, Welker, Brown and holdovers Gaffney and Reche Caldwell already in place. All he can do is to work as hard as he can and learn as much as he can, and let everything else take care of itself.

"I learned a lot the last two years, but the biggest thing was to be patient," he said. "Good things come to those who wait, and right now it's just a matter of whenever I get that shot, I make the best of it."

That means playing all-out in the preseason games - a pleasure in itself, he said, because it's against different faces.

"It's always fun to go against somebody else other than Rodney (Harrison), (Tedy) Bruschi, (Mike) Vrabel and everybody else every day," he said.

Spunky Bam?s in mix

Pats? wideout has versatility

PATRIOTS TRAINING CAMPPATRIOTS TRAINING CAMP

FOXBORO? Bam Childress was one of just three Patriots wide receivers ? Reche Caldwell and Troy Brown were the others ? to play in the 2006 season opener.

New England went out of its way this offseason to avoid such a shortage at the position, but the spunky Childress is still in the mix.

The 25-year-old is among those fighting for a roster spot.

?It?s a challenge,? Childress said. ?You?re talking about Randy Moss and all them guys. But I look at it as if I?m worried about them, I?m not doing my best. So I go out there and play hard and have fun and let everything take care of itself.?

Childress had two receptions for 17 yards in the Patriots? 13-10 preseason loss to Tampa Bay on Friday. He also lost his helmet during a 13-yard punt return in the first half.

Since signing as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State in 2005, Childress has played in three regular-season games, while spending most of his time on the practice squad. Still, he seems like one of those players that coach Bill Belichick likes to have around and his versatility is certainly an asset.

As Belichick noted this week, he?s played all of the receiver positions, X, Z and inside slot. The Patriots have worked Childress as a kickoff and punt return man during training camp and ? a la Brown ? in his first NFL game, the 2005 regular-season finale against Miami, he had three receptions to go along with five tackles as a reserve cornerback.

?He?s a guy that has a lot of multiple skills,? Belichick said. ?He?s a smart kid. He works hard and is always in condition, (he?s) good running after the catch, good with the ball in his hands. He has a variety of skills, a lot of things that can be utilized in different ways, and I?m sure we?ll continue to do that with him. Definitely a strength of his is his versatility.?

Childress made just seven starts in four seasons at Ohio State. Mainly a No. 3 receiver, playing behind future first-round picks Michael Jenkins and Santonio Holmes, Childress recorded 33 career receptions for 392 yards.

Childress is listed at 5-foot-10, which may be a bit generous, and 185 pounds. Despite his diminutive size, he has stood out a few times at camp.

?Bam is a pretty strong kid for his size, kind of like Troy (5-10, 193) is,? Belichick said. ?He?s not tall, but he?s thick and he?s strong and he?s quick and he?s versatile. I think there are similarities between those two players and I know both of them have heard it from other people about their size and their height and all of that. I don?t think it affects them.?

Childress is trying to make the most of his opportunities.

?Every game is really just really going out there and just playing hard and knowing your assignments and playing relaxed,? Childress said. ?If you do that you?ll be fine. Let God take care of the rest.?

Childress, a cousin of Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey, had three catches ? two from Tom Brady, one from Matt Cassel ? in last year?s preseason game against the Cardinals. He started the season on the practice squad before being activated for the opener. He was released two days after the 19-17 win over the Bills and signed to the practice squad Sept. 13. He was signed from the practice squad to the Patriots? active roster on Dec. 23.

He had two catches for 7 yards in the Christmas Eve game at Jacksonville.

Childress? given name is Brandon. His parents nicknamed him Bam ? a shortened form of Bamm Bamm Rubble ? because he used to misbehave after watching episodes of ?The Flintstones.?

?When I was little I was real bad after I watched ?The Flintstones,? ? Childress said. ?They just nicknamed me Bamm Bamm, and then they took off one (Bamm) after a while. They?d be so mad they?d be like, ?Bam!? And then it just stuck.?

Childress is hoping to stick with the Patriots.

BIG RETURN
Bam Childress returned a kickoff 38 yards in the first quarter to set up a five-play, 58-yard scoring drive that ended in a 28-yard touchdown strike from Tom Brady to Wes Welker that tied the game at seven.

Patriots vs. Titans: Game Notes

Up and down night

If Bill Belichick was hoping to send a mixed message, he sure did so in the case of receiver Bam Childress.

The third-year man is fighting for the final receiver spot on the roster. He was inserted as the returner with the first punt team and first kick return team.

Childress was the last receiver to get into the offense, though, behind the likes of Kelvin Kight and C.J. Young.

Childress did have one big catch, though, for 26 yards, setting up a Matt Gutierrez 2-yard TD plunge in the fourth quarter.

Bam goes out in style

The writing is on the wall for Childress.

Last night, he played regularly with the Pats' starting offense, which means the third-year pro out of Ohio State probably isn't going to be happy with the news this weekend when Bill Belichick chops his final roster from 75 to 53 for the upcoming season.

With Belichick resting what amounts to his regulars, all 36 of them, it was time for the back half of the roster to make one final impression.

Childress, a veteran of three real games with five career catches, again looked sharp, pulling in four grabs for 39 yards, including what proved to be the game-winning touchdown.

If he goes tomorrow - and it looks pretty certain he will with Belichick keeping as many as six receivers: Wes Welker, Donte' Stallworth, Randy Moss, Kelley Washington, Jabar Gaffney and Reche Caldwell - Childress' days as a Patriot will probably be over.

He could, however, again return to the practice squad.

"I think I've got one more year," said Childress, who also ran an end-around for 25 yards in the second half last night and played a little tailback, too, ending with 27 yards on three tries.

"I didn't even check it. If I do, I do. If I don't I don't. Whatever I can do, whatever it is to help this team win, I'm cool."

Clearly, Childress will be the toughest of cuts for Belichick and his staff. Here's an athlete who has done nothing but impress with his desire and work ethic, squeezing every ounce of skill out of his 5-10, 185-pound frame.

One final, lasting impression of Childress that will stick here is one of those 90-plus degree mornings back in August, the final one of training camp for that matter. Belichick gave the veterans the morning off. Morning practice was for the rookies and free agents, a teaching session.

And there is Childress, in the oppressive, Louisiana-like sweatbox, on the scout team at running back, just because a body was needed. He's there, among a pile of aspiring rooks, taking shots in the back. Anything he can for the club.

Knowing Childress, he probably didn't even need to be there.

Here's hoping one of the teams with a lesser corps of receivers gives Bam a chance. Childress is sure to land in his feet with a positive attitude.

"At times, I got frustrated, but now it's like a blessing," said Childress, 1999's Mr. Football in the state of Ohio. "Being behind Deion (Branch) and Troy Brown, who can't learn from Troy and Deion. I just took it and ran with it. I'm not frustrated at all. The more positions I can do - defense, running back, special teams - the better.

"It's out of my hands; whatever happens, happens. I've done all I can."

And just a little bit more.

Practice squad to be named

New England did not announced its practice squad yesterday, though there were reports that the team had come to an agreement with several players.

According to the Boston Globe, receivers Bam Childress and C.J. Jones, offensive lineman Clint Oldenburg, and linebacker Corey Mays will be returning to the club as members of the eight-man taxi squad.

Childress, listed at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, is a versatile reserve, seeing time on the active roster in both the 2005 and ?06 seasons. He has lined up at receiver, running back and on kicking teams with the Pats, and had a nice 25-yard rush against New York last Thursday.

Oscar time?

Multi-talented New England practice squad player Bam Childress apparently can add top-rated actor to his r?sum?. It was Childress who played the role of Chargers? back LaDainian Tomlinson in practice last week, and in part helped the Patriots? defense get ready for the league MVP.

The result? Tomlinson, who had a league-record 31 touchdowns last year, was held to just 43 yards on 18 carries ? a paltry 2.4 yards per carry.

?I think one of the things that we had last week was an exceptional look from the players who were on the scout team. Bam did a real good job. We had guys that were (Antonio) Gates and (Marlon) McCree and guys like that. We had (Shawne) Merriman and (Shaun) Phillips,? Belichick said. ?I?ll mention it to them when they come back on Wednesday about how important that was, how much that helped us prepare for the game and then how important it will be this week going forward into Buffalo.?
