WR Ray Small (official thread)

Gotta disagree here. For every Ray Small and Darius Hiley, there has been way too much "Good" to come from the "pipeline. The "Coach" can only do so much, in this case and in others that would be Coach Ginn, Sr. and Coach Tressel. These kids, at very young ages, are being coddled and told how great they are, day after day. How they are going to be rich beyond comprehension for performing on the football field. The trouble starts when they actually start believing it and leave evrything else that it takes to get there in "it's" wake. An inflated view of self needs to get knocked down every once in awhile, and in Ray's case its a shame that it didn't happen at home. I think things may have turned out differently if it had.

Why and from which end? Coach Ginn has a close relationship with Tressel and the staff and was instrumental in correcting some of Troy Smith's early attitude and body language with the satff that was leading him down the wrong path in his freshman and RS-Freshman years. And thank god it worked. There is nothing to suggest that this will have any effect on Newsome, Hall, and possibly Edwards and Owens.

My first thought about this was disappointment. Then I started thinking about the pipeline, but that's just the worrier in me.

I don't particularly care for the way Ray's father responded in this interview and his replies speak volumes. It's a shame it didn't work out, but I can certainly see why it didn't.

You are correct, we have had a lot of solid players come from Glennivle, but the pipeline is beginning to clog up with the national recognition in G-Villes program.

Hiley and Lenix never panned out, and Small's OSU career turned sour quickly. This won't bode too well for the Bucks up there.

Im not saying we won't snag 1-2 guys each recruiting class, but it is becoming more challenging to recruit from.

hmmm..

First off. What Career? Careers are something you earn, scratch, and claw for. Probably another guy who's depending on this kid to somehow get to the pro's and financially fullfill his dreams. This is college ball. In order to have a career in the NFL you earn it in college.

What Ray did was skip classes, meetings, dropped passes, fumbled some punts, and just hasn't performed. So career? Hey, Ray is the one who slammed that door shut. He had a full ride to THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, playing infront of 100k+, national recognition, and is an NFL factor for this "CAREER" and he threw it away. Who's going to hurt more by this loss depature? Ray Small or Ohio State? Ohio State will have other greats come along, where as Ray just blew a golden oportunity. Sad Sad Sad.

Unbelieveable... yeah it's personal... One of the greatest coaches in college football is being so immature and making it personal that he's purposely screwing over Ray. Yeah thats it.... Thats it....
It has nothing to do with your son, yup, nothing at all. / Sarcasim.

I'll tell you all a little something. My junior year in high school I quit football and there was a HUGE fall out between me and my coach. Well to make it short I blammed him for not playing me ( I was a starter previous year) that much but what I realized is I got lazy, fatter, and felt a sense of entitlement just because of my past success. I realize TODAY that it was pretty much ALL my fault and I also regret my decision to this day. If I wouldn't have skipped a two a days practice, if I would have kept in shape, and if I would have put the hard work in I wouldn't have put the coach in a position to make an example of me. Honestly I think it's pretty pathetic if he can't see this at 22-23 years old because I knew my mistake before I was 20.

Also as far as Glenville as a program. The school supply's great talent but even if we lose a recruit now and again from then it will not hurt us. We'll just simply find another kid (probably just as good if not better) else where. Don't get me wrong it's nice having them as a pipeline but losing some kids from there wouldn't hurt us. Regardless Ray is the first disgruntled Tarblooder... Who the kids going to listen to? Teddy, Troy, or Daunte making millions? or Ray Small?

OSU football notebook: Small suspended two games, dad says

By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Receiver and punt returner Ray Small is in trouble again, and the latest incident prompted his father to lash out at the Ohio State coaching staff. Small has been suspended for a violation of team rules, according to an athletic department spokesperson, who said the length of the suspension is undetermined.
But Ken Small, Ray's father, said yesterday it is for two games, and the reason is because OSU said his son missed a class, which Ken denies. He said the coaching staff is singling out his son unnecessarily.
"We don't think he's getting a fair shake, and we don't know why," he said. "It seems they're trying to intentionally ruin his career."
Ray Small's problems began in the spring, when he admittedly was late to some classes. Coach Jim Tressel stripped him of his No. 4, giving him No. 82, and held him out of most of spring practice.
Ken Small said the family met with Tressel at that point and asked him to release Small from his scholarship. They thought that entering his junior season, maybe Ray needed to transfer and get a fresh start.

A couple of things I'd like to mention in this discussion:

As of today, Ray Small is still a Buckeye, and he will always be linked to Ohio State. We are all Buckeye fans. Let's treat the discussion of this latest incident accordingly.

From what I've read in the press, Ray Small has made a number of mistakes (late to meetings, etc.). I think everything I've read seems to indicate that he is a young man who is struggling to find his sense of responsibility. Guess what? Many people his age do, regardless of whether they are extremely talented athletes or not. Remember, some college students are already adults, and the rest are trying to figure out how to become one. Nothing he's doing is that atypical for someone his age.

Ray Small, IMO, is a very talented young man who has had some flashes of brilliance on the football field for Ohio State. He sounds like he's needed some help with responsibility/maturity issues, and the coaching staff has tried to help him understand those issues and face them head-on. I see no wrongdoing by the coaching staff here--it's a young man trying to find his direction in life, and a number of people who are trying to help him find his way. (I'm not a big fan of some of the quotes attributed to his father, but that's another issue.)

Going forward, I hope that Ray realizes as much of his potential as he can. If that involves staying at Ohio State and growing within his current environment, that's great. If it's best for Ray to move on and get a fresh start, that's also understandable.

I don't know Ray Small, but I cheer him when he makes plays for Ohio State. I wish him the best of luck, both on and off the field, no matter where his path takes him.

Well, unless it's Michigan... (to avoid the responses--that's a joke, I have no info, and would guess strongly that it wouldn't be, if only because the Big Ten does not allow in-conference transfers to be awarded athletic scholarships)

Damn, and I was one of the few idiots sticking up for him. My bad.
I hope this doesn't mean we go back to the Brians as our punt returners, at least not w/o someone else getting a shot.

In the Cleveland Plain Dealer there is alot of "he said, she said" coming out of the Small camp. Ken Small, Ray's father, encouraged Ray to lie about an injury to get a medical red shirt. This is interesting. I think I'll side with JT on this. "Character issues" IMO.

I hope he finds it in his best interest to stick around. I think he would be greatly aided by Jim Tressel and his views on life outside of football. Think about Troy's career at Ohio State. He was upset he was not getting a fair shake, he was ready to transfer because he was stuck in a rut... he stuck around and let the system work. He started to lose that "all against me" attitude and became one of the most well respected MEN to ever pass through the Ohio State program. Even now with the way his Pro career is going he is still showing the attitude he learned through his days under Coach T.

I think one of the worst moves he can make would be to leave. He needs to learn life is more than just what happens between the lines on Saturdays. If he sticks around he will greatly benefit, and I think his father needs a little of the same teachings.

It's ashame things have turned out this way for Ray, unfortunately, he only has himself to blame. I really thought he had turned the corner earlier this year, especially through the first 4 or so games. He was leading the team in receptions, and he was one of the better punt returners in the Big Ten. I still have hope that he gets his life turned around, whether it be here or somewhere else. It's never good to see a young man fail, or waste talent, but one has to wonder how many chances he has left.

It appears to me as though things might have gone to far for him to return to the team next year. I can't imagine the comments his dad has made in public will help out his situation at all. For those of you in the know.....is the relationship between Ray/Ray's family and the coaching staff too far gone for there to be any hope of him returning to the team? I understand if things can't be said at this time, due to the sensitivity of the matter, but I was just wondering if there's any hope for him to continue his education/career at tOSU.

Best wishes to Ray in whatever he decides to do in the future......I just hope he becomes the man JT and the coaching staff envisioned when they recruited him.
