Shaw receiver beefs up for senior season

Monday, August 24, 2009 From staff reports

Shaw wideout Tyrone Williams has good news for Ohio State fans and bad news for fans of the 10 teams scheduled to play the Cardinals this fall.
Williams (6-7, 215 pounds) said Friday he is leaning toward Ohio State and hopes to make a decision after the first week of the football season, which opens for Shaw on Friday. Besides OSU, the senior also is considering Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas, Michigan State and West Virginia.
Scout.com ranks Williams as the 33rd-best wide receiver in the country and rivals.com ranks him 44th.
@StoryAd
The bad news for defenses is Williams has grown almost 2 inches and put on at least 15 pounds of muscle since last year. Also, he feels stronger than ever despite having surgery in October to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
"It feels better than it did before I got messed up. Running track helped a lot. It made it stronger and helped my confidence," he said.
Williams caught 11 passes for 402 yards and eight touchdowns in five games last year. He said his goal this year is to catch at least five passes and score three touchdowns per game.
He caught four balls in a scoreless scrimmage at University School on Friday.

Harding Rallies to Tie Shaw 24-24

WARREN ? Only the weather was able to stop Harding High?s second-half comeback Friday night, but not before the Raiders caught opening-night opponent East Cleveland Shaw at 24-24.

. . .

Shaw came right back, driving 80 yards for a touchdown, keyed by a 40-yard gain on a streak pattern to the Cardinals? big-time college prospect Tyrone Williams.

The 6-foot-7, 215-pound senior wideout was everything advertised.

Though he caught just three passes, they went for 82 yards and all were caught despite double or triple coverage.

. . .

On Shaw?s next possession, a dropped pass and a good stop up front had the Cardinals in a third-and-nine situation at their own 26. But Williams fought off two defenders on a post pattern for a 36-yard gain, then Small found Jerome Talton wide open deep for a 38-yard scoring pass.

Small?s 6-yard touchdown pass to Williams with 1:37 left in the half increased Shaw?s lead to 24-12. That drive included a 62-yard bomb to Micah White on another third-and-long.

He's every bit of 6'7". He could have had 20 catches but they only threw to him 5 times: the 3 catches, one he should have caught and a ball thrown behind him. I think he's still thinking alot about the knee because on the long gain over the middle, you could tell he dropped to the turf (upon contact) rather than get a few more yards, which was a smart move .

He appears to have decent speed, but his size is unbelievable. The pass on his touchdown was bad and he just made it look so easy. The Harding guys had great position on him, he just jumped up and took it away.

No one will be able to stop him near the goal line, he's just so damn big and has great springs. I talked to someone from the staff and they said he just needs to get his score up a little and also said, the funny thing is, he's still growing.

Other than, that one play, I saw no evidence of a limp.

He also kicked off for Shaw. (not a kicker):)

If he's kicking off, he must feel pretty good about the knee.

Running track in the spring also is a great sign, you don't push that hard if it's not in great shape. I think he's being more cautious then anything, and I don't blame him. He has two goals this year, 1) stay healthy, 2) keep the grades up.

Welcome to the Buckeye family, Tyrone!!

Love this one. We've been looking for a WR with basketball height for some time now. Pryor showed what we can do against Texas with height like that. Just throw the ball up high on a fade route and let him loose. Congrats Tyrone!!
