Ohio State football: Tressel expects biggest leap from Pryor this season

Jim Tressel thinks Terrelle Pryor will be ready to let it go this year.Of course, one of the most popular topics today was Jim Tressel's sophomore quarterback.

Everyone anticipates Terrelle Pryor and this sophomore class emerging as the leaders on a team that lost 28 seniors and three juniors, and Tressel can see how that could happen.

"I think it will be more natural for him to lead from this point on," Tressel said of Pryor. "It was a little bit more difficult when he was thrust into the role he didn't expect in the fall, or maybe we didn't expect in the fall."

But Tressel said leadership comes from doing it on the field. And Pryor has room to grow there. The biggest area would be what most fans saw last year - Pryor's reluctance to let the ball go at times. That's a good mistake to make in Tressel's book, but Pryor can find a better balance.

"He was only going to throw it if he was sure. And I'd rather he'd err on that side rather than just, oh, I'll just throw it," Tressel said. "But to be really good you have to be pretty sure and (think) I'll let it go because it might be on time. When you have only seen those coverages a few times in your life and you don't even know our things, it's not like it's branded in your brain yet. You're going to be slightly hesitant."

...and now he weighs 238

A monster year seems likely. The term "Sophomore Slump" is often heard because it is often the case. All indications are that TP will avoid that fate. Here's hoping that bigger and stronger and more experienced will lead to something special.

I don't doubt the possibility, but neither am I counting on it.

"I want to be better than Tim Tebow..."

You better genuflect when you say that fella!!!!!!!!!

You want him to bend at the knees???

If nothing else, I love the kid's attitude. His attitude will spread amongst his teammates, and the 2009 recruiting class coming in. It all starts with attitude, which I've always thought was this past senior class's biggest weakness. They never seemed to consistently believe they could compete with anybody.

While I'm probably a little more skeptical than most fans regarding the upcoming season, I truly believe we will be tough to beat. We still have a lot of holes to fill, and the USC game should be interesting. But if these guys have the attitude and the confidence to win, then they just might......

I totally agree. I think Prior's shortcomings as a freshman were largely due to a lack of a full spring practice to get integrated into the offense. He's repeatedly shown a great combination of leadership, motivation, and sheer talent that pegs him for a breakout year.

Pretty neat day...Most of my classes are usually on the other side of the oval but I had a biology lab in Jennings Hall today and who was just hanging out near the building? Terrelle Pryor...I just had to say whats up to him. He had his yankee hat cocked backwards and to the side. Very cool and nice dude willing to just talk for like 10 minutes. I can't wait to see him tear up the defenses this fall Go Bucks!!!!

You know, the two things I love about Pryor is his confidence and his ability to seize the leadership reins as a frosh. He will only get better at that as we watch him grow.

Everyone knows his mechanics and decision making need to improve, but that's what he has the coaches for. I have looked back at every QB we have had during the Tressel era and can honestly say that every single one of them has gotten better. They might not have been to the level we wanted at times, but all showed significant improvement.

I look for this kid to get better and better and bring home a national title. the pieces are there and he is the guy to lead them.
