Or, just to play devil's advocate here, perhaps Yahoo has an alterior motive in all of this...

Yahoo itself is having financial issues. It's clearly been surpassed by Google and Bing is also biting into it.

Add to that they generate revenue from ads much like a lot of other sites do. How do you get a spike in it? Take on the biggest fanbase and one of the most successful/hated schools in the nation.

I can do the anonymous source thing too

Hey, I hope that's all it is and OSU sues Yahoo for every penny they have.

I'm a little more defensive of journalists than most because of my degree. :p Sources dictate the story sometimes.

Again, this is Yahoo,

Yes, it is Yahoo, known pretty much only for muck-raking and program-tearing-down in college football journalism these days. In other cases they've brought a little more to the story than anonymous sources and hearsay, but we're not there yet with this one. This is right now an unsubstantiated story implying that Jim Tressel and/or Gene Smith are either so brazenly deceitful, or so very stupid, that they would ignore or lie about a situation that in the era of Yahoo journalism would so certainly come to light anyway.

My guess for the unnamed source: PennState1985. This has the makings of a wacky postmodern experiment, possibly with a thesis at stake.

So has JT ever won a game only scoring FGs while the other team only scored TDs?

you're selling YAHOO ridiculously short...LOL
Seriously. That is precisely the type of response we laugh at from other fambases. Yahoo has been pretty solid thus far. However...

My initial reaction to this story is that this article seems loosely written and speculative for such a large accusation. It seems like someone has a bone to pick with JT.
...something here doesn't add up. The difference between this and USC/Oregon is hard evidence. Unless there are recordings, which seems unlikely (why sit on them?), this seems like throwing stuff out there to further a developing reputation as college football's new crimedog.

I'll wait until more comes out before forming any kind of opinion one way or another.

Well, in this scenario the former player would likely have no way to prove that the conversation with Tressel took place unless it was in a group setting.

Which would be more than enough for Yahoo to run this story though...all I'm saying is I was instantly uncomfortable with the Athletic Department falling on the sword by saying they didn't properly educate the players, and I became really disappointed with the Athletic Department when Pitt and Thaddeus said they were told the rules up and down in regards to trading awards for benefits.

It really wouldn't take much at all to get a former player to talk especially if he is protected as an anonymous source. Yahoo has already won, the hits this story will generate has more than paid off the risk of backlash. And if shit hits the fan for yahoo, said source gets revealed.

Yahoo isn't stupid.

The source will be leaked assuming this story gains longer legs.

Well I'd hope you wouldn't want your profession to be trashed on the website you frequent too

Nobody had an issue with Yahoo until Ohio State's name was brought up. Now they're only out to tear people down and are probably not credible.

:!

EDIT: Yahoo is known for more than tearing people down. They're a legitimate news source. I don't get why all of a sudden they aren't. Actually, I do. Like someone else said, this is what we laugh at other fanbases about.

So... Yahoo would be content to run with the unconfirmed allegations from a single (possibly disgruntled) source?

First of all, Yahoo is doing there job. They should not be chastised for serving as a watchdog to college football. That's a big part of their role as a news source. They would be lauded for doing something like this to USC, Oregon, scUM, etc.

Now with that being said, this situation is complete shit. There's definitely no positive way to look at this, as it appears like someone has to be fudging their story somewhere.

I have complete faith in Jim Tressel. I would have never imagined that he would even be associated with something like this. However, people make mistakes. As much as we love him, Jim Tressel is still a human, therefore he makes mistakes. I still can't imagine him making a mistake on this large of a scale, but it's definetly possibly. There is just too much dirt here to try and ignore the story.

Here's hoping that by some miracle, we come out of this situation unscathed. Only time will tell.

:oh:
