Hey, I agree with your points. Maybe I'm calling for a toughness that isn't there. Maybe its wishful thinking. But to let Ortiz keep killing you like this without trying something else is the worst alternative to me.

As it stands now, Ortiz is plating himself everytime against the Yanks. In that sense, its no different if you get a bomb from Ortiz & a bomb from Varitek or you hit Ortiz and Varitek hits a 2 run bomb. Its 2 runs either way. I'd rather take my chances with Varitek not hitting a home run than facing Ortiz.

Look at these numbers vs. the Yanks since '03 (including postseason):

57 G, 40 R, 74 H, 15 2B, 17 HR, 50 RBI, 26 BB, .335 AVG.

I mean, I agree with what you said about the Yanks' pitchers (Mussina wouldn't hit anybody under any circumstances). But enough is enough. Put him on his ass.

It may be an alternative, but maybe they're thinking like, for example, the Detroit Pistons in last years NBA finals. Pistons had a formula that let Shaq get his points and rebounds and all of his stats that he'd get regardless, and play mad defense on the other 4 players on the court, and it worked pretty damn good.

Yankees might feel that they just need to take their lumps with Ortiz, and hope for better success against the others. Problem with that is, the Pistons had the necessary players that are good enough on D to take care of the other players, the Yankee pitching staff doesn't look good enough to stop the other Red Siox batters.

When the Yanks had Clemens, he had that badass attitude that he would throw at guys, and I'm sure if they still ahd him that Ortiz would've been flat on his ass a few times by now. One of Clemens' greatest moments was him calling out Barry Bonds for his elbow wear, and telling him that he's going to bean him, then the next day when he's out on the mound he does infact put a 4 seamer right into Bonds' elbow armor like he said he would.

You need talented pitchers with that mentality to have that edge over a player, because even if someone gets hit by Sturtze, Pavano, Brown etc. nothing about them will make them fearful of coming up to the plate for their next at bat. If anyone, have Johnson hurl a fastball over his head, ala John Kruk, but outside of that, no one will get Big Papi to back down and lose his mental ground.

Don't blame the A's for any of those big salaries. 15 people made over 5mill a year before Canseco ever made that much. I'm pretty sure Sierra was the first to crack that barrier. Hard to believe that turd is still around.

Well, not only that, but a big thing with the Yankees is that they haven't had many lefties in the rotation. If you want to know how poorly the Yankees are constructed, just look at the absence of lefty pitchers and lefty power bats for a team that plays in Yankee Stadium. How frickin' stupid. That's a huge reason why they lose.

But anyway, back to the point: Ortiz is murder on righthanders. Not only do the Yankees not have a lefty starter (cept for RJ now) to combat Ortiz, they don't even have an effective lefty match-up guy to face him. That's been a big problem.

I liked that too. Overall, that Yankee-Giants series was pretty entertaining. Bonds hit one of the farthest balls I've ever seen at the Stadium, and Torre (who's the ballsiest manager in baseball) leaping out of the dug-out to intentionally walk Bonds with Roger on the mound. I would've like to have seen what Bonds could do had he played in Yankee Stadium his whole career. He'd dent the seats in right field. He'd probably be at 800 homers by now, and the HR record would be in the 80's too.

Brutus, I don't know what you want me to say. The A's were the first to ink that deal. Its a fact. Were does Canseco stand on the first to break $4 million? I think Kirby Puckett was the first to break $3.

I just like the fact that the A's were smart enough to dump him before they had to pay him any more than the 4.3Mil they spent in '92. Of course he did make 4.5Mil in'97 when he came back to town.
So, technically, they did sign him to that pact, but I'm happy they shipped him before it came due. Of course they did pay Sierra over 6 Mil in '95.

Boy, baseball is whacked. Bring back hockey ! (except the Rangers, they need to be put out to pasture) :biggrin:
