Your top 25 favorite movies.

I have a hard time adding newer movies to my all time list without seeing how they stand up over time, so here are the movies that are already in for me (no real particular order):

Godfather - simply the best movie ever, except…
Godfather II - perhaps tied with #1
Shawshank Redemption - “Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’: that’s goddamn right.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - maybe the reason I studied religion in undergrad
Empire of the Sun - absolutely perfect movie featuring a young Bale, Malcovich & Pantoliano (and, randomly, a young Ben Stiller)
The Usual Suspects - I just love this movie
The Goonies - an early favorite movie
Back to the Future - an early favorite and now an iconic American movie
Star Wars IV-IV - I hate the new ones, but the originals are still fantastic
Casino - one of my favorite gangster films for the way it was shot - fantastic looking movie
Once Upon a Time in America - highly underrated gangster film
A Bronx Tale - one of my favorites
Hoop Dreams - the perfect documentary
Scent of a Woman - great movie, but probably ruined Pacino’s career by convincing him he needed to yell in all of his movies going forward
Dead Poet’s Society / School Ties - tied for second place behind Scent of a Woman in prep-school dramas
25th Hour / Malcolm X - Spike Lee’s best movies (and the movie that Denzel should have won best leading actor)
Glory - IMO the best war movie
Thomas Crowne Affair (the newer version) - it was hard to believe that Pierce could have been a bigger pimp than he was as Bond, but he was a genius in this movie
Se7en - Creepiest movie ever, IMO - tremendous performances by all involved
The Matrix - this and T2 started new movements in visual and special effects
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - Gene Wilder’s performance gets better the older I get - his character is completely detached
Beverly Hills Cop / Coming to America / Trading Places - Eddie’s best work
Kings of Comedy / Killin’ Them Softly / Bigger and Blacker - my favorite stand-up videos (yes, ahead of Raw and Delirious)
Swingers - just a classic guys’ movie
Bad Boys I & II - highly entertaining, the Bruck produced the action - great on-screen comedy combination too

And here are some new ones that I think are great:

Syriana - excellent commentary on what’s going on in the Mideast these days
The Good Shepherd - great, great realistic
Blood Diamond - I still can’t believe that Djimon Hounsou didn’t win best supporting actor for his performance
The Last King of Scotland - scary-good performance by Forest Whitaker
The Bourne Trilogy - Damon kicks some serious ass
The Ocean’s Trilogy - hilarious with amazing ensemble casts
The Interpreter - for some reason I just really like this movie
The Departed - just a great movie, with a better cast

Still working on newcomers…

Well, in no particular order, I'll name a few of my random favorites, starting with a serious Coen brother's fix:

1) The Big Lebowski ("Obviously you're not a golfer.")
2) Oh Brother, Where art Thou? ("I dont want Fop, goddamnit! I'm a Dapper Dan man.")
5) The Usual Suspects (Biggest twist in American cinema history? Well, there is still The Crying Game.)
6) Amores Perros (one of the best films I've seen in years, but can make you queasy if you're a dog lover like me)
12) Donnie Darko ("How exactly does one suck a [censored]?" This movie has a cult following for a reason.)
25) Cool Hand Luke ("Callin' it your job don't make it right.")

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Well, I got started on your list and just finished this. I greatly enjoyed it. I need to watch it again to make sure I fully comprehend everything it was saying. :)

(The "ummm..... :frown2:" factor of this film is pretty much off the charts.)

A good place to start - definitely one of my top 25.

Lurid and shocking and violent to be sure ... but so is Macbeth. A very beautifully filmed movie, despite the disturbing images.

Actually, a very spiritual message is at the heart of the movie: Free will is God's greatest gift to man, and thus forcing a man to act "good" is itself "evil" because it removes his free will.

What's your problem with Happy Gilmore? :p

Dr. Strangelove (1964)
2001: A Space Odessey (1968)
Pulp Fiction (1994)

Picked up those three tonight (and Raging Bull). Dr. Strangelove is fantastic. Every scene in the war room = classic. I'm glad I listened in history class, the film wouldn't be nearly as great if I had no idea about our views of communism back in the day.

I still think 'Raging Bull' is DeNiro and Pesci's best.
