Derrick Timmons, a Sarasota Gators coach for a separate age group, said he was advised by the league's attorney not to speak about the incident, but said the league is trying to put it behind them.
"I don't want nothing to get twisted, so I'm not going to say anything," he said. "We all know what happened. Whatever anybody from North Port tells you ain't true. That's all I have to say about that."
Timmons said the Gators are divided into five age groups, ranging from 4 to 14. The age group involved in the incident caught on tape was 13- and 14-year-olds.

That is absolutely ridiculous, although I have seen other situations that could have turned out like this, but thankfully did not. It doesn't matter how egregious the call was, that is absolutely uncalled for.

So why wouldn't the ref press charges? Good lord, there has to be other consequences for rubbish like this other than "expelled" from the league
it was tough to see, but it looked like the ref was swinging at the dude he was arguing/fighting with as the camera swung back to that end-zone. If he threw a punch, that might be a reason he didn't want to press charges.

Nearly impossible to tell definitively from that video, though.

Oh okay, so what you're saying is the ref, after being attacked, is supposed to stand there and get the shit kicked out of him? Yeah I don't think so. And for that kid wearing #6 jersey, should NEVER play the sport again.

I'm against fighting and stuff, but my gosh if someone's gonna come after me and attack me, you're damn right I'll step up and defend myself.

I'm not saying what happened to the ref was ok.

I just made an observation as to why he might not want to press charges. There could be other reasons too. It is unfortunate that the camera was aimed away from that area when whatever caused all those people to charge the end zone happened.

Just to speculate, let's say the guy with the ref in the endzone is #6's dad. If he saw, or thought he saw, the ref sucker punch his dad, would you feel the same about his reaction? Again, that's just speculation on my part. I have no idea what really happened.

A mob going after one dude like that is never ok though.

With the abuses that referees take, I am amazed that folks even will be referees at this level...

Not that I ever coached for the money-I made about 8K to coach for 12 years, but I clear $300 for one full day/six games of youth football. I have taken my share of verbal beatings from the coaches, but in a sick way I enjoy it. What's sad is that 90% of them are shitty coaches who do little aside from yell at their kids and refs.

If I ever end up having a son who wants to play football (it'll be his choice), I'm only going to allow him to play if there are good people in charge. I've seen first hand how having guys who aren't involved in education as coaches is a recipe for disaster. In the words of Molly Shannon, "don't even get me started."

I used to umpire baseball. The players were never a problem. The "adults", on the other hand...

If I was that ref I would not only press charges I'd pursue every legal action I could against those scum bags. Throw the book at them.

Maybe the kid had repressed memories about the ref molesting him years earlier, most likely playing soccer. Face it, there's something not right about soccer.
