2012 Offense Discussion

Oh, so 08 & 09 UF with Timmy T didn't run an up-tempo spread??

I expected this to have been answered by now...

The answer is simply: No, Urban did not run up-tempo as an integral part of the offense before hiring Tom Herman. In fact, it's been widely reported that one of the main reasons for the Herman hire was to have Herman bring the up-tempo approach with him.

I was being rather sarcastic - I was however quite sure UF ran a rather no huddle approach. I'm aware they were not where near as high tempo as an Oregon, WVU, Oki etc etc... but to say it wasn't a 'faster pace' offense doesn't quite make sense.

The Plain Dealer reported this last December:

Plain Dealer said:
...For instance, Meyer said he didn't want to go with an up-tempo offense at Florida because he wanted the leadership of Tebow and some of his veteran offensive linemen in the huddle.

"When you go up-tempo, you lose the leadership of the quarterback," Meyer said. "The whole intangible part of football, you lose that when you go fast, no-huddle. So I'm evaluating that now. I don't know."
...

Urban later said that he would still huddle in some situations so as to maintain that leadership; but that they would eventually become a primarily no-huddle offense. They're not there yet; but he's moving to that. He was very clear that he didn't do that when he had Tebow.

Now that I'm watching the nebraska game for a 4th time (on YouTube - thanks MD ) - I noticed on that, while Smith wasn't thrown to many times in the game, two throws his direction could have gone a lot better. One was thrown a little too far, the second thrown a little behind and inside (where the defender was). Both looked like GREAT opportunities for Miller to throw to the back shoulder. I know those guys have some good chemistry after the summer... would be great to see some work on that aspect, I have a great deal of confidence that Smith can make the play to his back shoulder, especially with so many defenders likely to play on top or to the inside of him to prevent the big play. Just some thoughts... carry on...

The official stats have Nebraska with 4 more minutes than OSU, not the other way around.

We did have a pick six and a punt return where we got scores but immediately gave the ball back. That's gonna skew things a little.

They also beat us in TOP by five and a half minutes in our awful first quarter.

Anyone else notice that Meyer forgot Mewhort's name during his Monday press conference? He referenced Fragel by name, Linsley too, then stumbled at one point and said "our left tackle"... I feel like a second time he didn't mention him by name, but instead by "tackle." Maybe I'm wrong, but it sure seemed like he forgot who his starting left tackle was, and I found it funny
