List: tOSU, Illini(offer),FSU, Miami, Michigan, Tenn, Purdue
Will likely be one of Ohio's top defensive back prospects in 2005. Drawing comparisons to Antoine Winfield. Great speed and is a hard hitter and tackler. Good feet, hips and instincts. Received his first scholarship offer (Illinois) before his sophomore year.
Jovanni was at tOSU camp last season.

Bench: 265

The OPS guy compares his hitting style to that of Will Allen. He says Jovani is a true cover corner who shows the same hitting style of Will Allen. He saw him match-up with some top senior DI recruited receivers and hold his own. His game is played at a fast & intense pace, and he possesses the speed to break on a pass in a spilt second. In coverage he saw him use great technique in getting position on receivers, and either make the play or kill the play.

Jovani is coached by former Chicago Bear Maurice Douglass. tOSU, USC, ASU, OU, UK, Illini, N. Dame, FSU, Miami, Michigan, Purdue, and Tenn. have been inquiring about Chappel. Chappel was "hands down" the best player at the Cincy MSL camp last year. He was also able to showcase his speed and cover skills at the Junior AA combine. There were 4 videos provided. He looks like a good tackler, but as always it is hard to tell if he truely posseses great cover skills on these type of films. He is listed at 5'8 by this report and that seems about right imo.

Gosh, can scUM please continue to recruit these tiny dbs? Once Lyons, Hartline and others come of age, as well as possibilities with Hornsby, etc. we might have to ask our receivers not to jump vs. scUM corners in order to make it more challenging and better preparation for our bowl games.

CB's need to be fast and quick as opposed to big and tall. Jump ball situations where a 6'4 guy is simply outleaping a 5'10 DB are not extremely common, whereas a DB needing to react immediately to the ball w/ quickness are-that's where smaller guys make their mark. A good CB should not be reacting to a large receiver, he should be reacting to the ball, and using his speed and quickness to make a play first. That's why there are plenty of 5'10 CBs in the NFL doing just fine. If you remember Antoine Winfield, he had one nightmarish game against Plaxico Burress, but was an All American at OSU and is an All Pro caliber CB. Why-he hits and has great technique and quickness.

I wouldn't say that at all. Winfield was a hell of a player, but to say 1 in a billion-you really are smoking rock. He is/was a much better hitter than most CBs, but there have been plenty of college CBs w/ his level of skill since 98'.

By Chris Pool...includes video. Jovani is one of the best cover corners in the Midwest. He has great closing speed and good hips. Size is all he is missing.

Rivals
Chappel has offers from Illinois, North Carolina, Penn St., and Eastern Michigan.

North Carolina, Penn State, Ohio St., and Tennessee are his favorites. Jovani was at the OSU junior day, and is very interested in becoming a Buckeye. It appears he will wait until after the season to make a decision.

Scout $
Boston College, Notre Dame, Purdue, Illinois, North Carolina, Eastern Michigan, and Toledo have offered. Alabama, Wisky, and Wva may soon follow.

By Chris Pool Midwest Recruiting Analyst

Lock-down cover cornerbacks are always at a premium and one of the best in the Midwest is Ohio’s Javoni Chappel. The 5-foot-8, 175-pounder, from Trotwood (Trotwood-Madison) has the ball skills of Brandon Harrison, who signed with Michigan in February but he attacks the football better than most corners that I’ve seen on film. Who has offered Chappel? Who are Javoni’s early favorites? Check it out.

Cornerback is the most pressure-filled position on the football field. Cornerbacks have to have selective amnesia and they have to have a little cockiness to themselves. Explosion out of the back-pedal and smooth hip turn are a must to play this position.

Javoni Chappel has all the tools to play corner at the next level. He’s a super athlete with explosive quickness and outstanding footwork. Chappel says he owes his success on the football field to his coach.

“I owe everything to Coach (Maurice) Douglass,” said Chappel.

“Coach (Douglass) knows what it takes to play cornerback at the next level. He played with Kentucky and in the NFL with the (Chicago) Bears.

“Coach Douglass is good at teaching the little tricks that cornerbacks can use to their advantage on the football field.

“Coach is the one who taught me to have a plan before I go out on the field. Study my opponent on film. Look at the tendencies of my opponents. He taught me to be confident but not cocky. Coach Douglass has been a true mentor and I’ve been blessed to have him be a part of my life.”

For those of you who feel that Chappel might be too small to play corner at the next level, take a look at his film clips. Javoni has a tremendous vertical leap and he hits like a strong safety. He’s also excellent at supporting the run.

Which schools have offered Chappel a scholarship?

“I have offers from North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Purdue and Eastern Michigan. West Virginia and Wisconsin are close to offering. Michigan just requested tape.

“My favorites right now are Ohio State, North Carolina, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Purdue, Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan.”

Chapel told Scout.com that he attended a 1-day combine at Tennessee last weekend and he plans on camping at Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan, West Virginia as well as a few different combines.

“We’re going to West Virginia as team.” Chappel said. “Coach Douglass is going to be helping out at Michigan this year, so I’ll be going to that camp for sure. I’m also going to be going to the Michigan Nike Camp and the (Scout.com) combine at Akron.”

Chappel led his team in tackles from his cornerback position with 65-solos. He broke up 12 passes and had 2 interceptions.
