'08 OH LB/RB Brandon Beachum (Penn State signee)

When and where did Brandon run a 4.87 forty that could be hurting him?
That quote about 4.87 has been in the 2008 prospect blogs since the first edition (February 2007). If it is slowing him down then that isn't showing up in his offer sheet.
While I cannot tell you at which combine or camp that was recorded it is clear that it was not one of the current round - else the edit date on the lead posts of the 2008 Top Recruit News Blogs (1, 2) would be recent. So, I conclude the slower number comes from an earlier date.
Beachum was described in another recruiting blog as showing a 4.82 forty - but again that seems to point to a combine prior to this year.
Scouting Ohio shows a 4.62 from the 2006 Akron combine - he was also at the AA combine this year, but no results from that were publicly disclosed.

Either way - if there really are questions about Beachum's speed he has an excellent chance to answer them during the upcoming camp at Ohio State.
Hopefully he can earn the Buckeye offer he so clearly wants.

Some of the best high school football players in the country were in Champaign this weekend for unofficial visits with the Illini. Liuget, a defensive end from the Miami area, was one of three four-star recruits on campus. Washington Dunbar defensive tackle Reggie Ellis, Ohio running back Brandon Beachum and Liuget were all at Memorial Stadium to work out, meet current players and check out the progress on stadium construction.

He's like my uncle Roberto Bernini. I love everybody!

Regardless of whether or not he has an :osu: offer, he would be quite the coup out of the state of Ohio for the Badgers. If even half the offer list was accurate, it would be extremely impressive. I'd imagine the Bucks would offer him if not for the limited schollies. He pretty much gave a glowing endorsement of everyone, but to say "I visited :wisc:and basically fell in love with them", is pretty telling IMO. We'd have to be the favorite unless he has a short term memory. He does look like a linebacker as opposed to a running back though. We need lb's more too, so that would likely be where he'd end up here as well.

Not sure how it really would be a "coup out of the state of Ohio for the Badgers" when Ohio State hasn't offered, i.e., not competing with Wiscy for him.

agreed...but in looking at some of his other offers and Rivals' lofty ranking of the kid (No. 50 nationally), it would have all the makings of a massive get for the Badgers...regardless of if OSU offers or not.

coup:

1. a highly successful, unexpected stroke, act, or move; a clever action or accomplishment.

Tis a clever, unexpected, successful accomplishment to procure one of the top recruits from Ohio, exploiting the fact that OSU has limited schollies to offer.

As it pertains to Brandon's ability, I don't care whether OSU offered or would have offered. In a typical year, he probably would have gotten an OSU offer. It's speculation, but a reasonable form. The only thing "winning" a recruiting battle with OSU for a player from the state would accomplish....is to project to future success. The rest is just machismo.

On one hand you build this up as a coup...but then you downplay the absence of a head-to-head battle.

Sounds like talking out both sides to me.

Fact: If tOSU offers, he is a Buckeye.

Is there a voluntary coup? Honestly, how clever or unexpected is it if the dream school doesn't offer? Did Michigan score a coup with Mealer when he admitted that tOSU was his dream but he saw the writing on the wall?

Having a top player from Ohio, without an offer from Ohio State, committing to another Big Ten school is hardly a coup. You've already got one player from Ohio (OL Jake Current) committed to Wisconsin. We've even had a few Ohio Mr. Football winners (not offered by OSU) go to other Big Ten schools.

Would getting Beachum to go to Cheese U. be a big get? Yep. Would it be would a coup? Nah. Now if JT were to extend an offer and Beachum still went to Wisconsin, there's your coup...

EDIT: 21 sho' can type fast...

The cleverness intrinsically exists due to the fact that OSU didn't offer. Otherwise it wouldn't be that clever.

OG, it is unexpected for Wisconsin to net a top 50 rivals out of state player. The Badgers haven't even gotten a signee from a rivals100 player out of state since the site charts back to 2002. We would be acquiring a highly rated player with several offers from national powers.

It's a coup!

Edit: Sorry for igniting a semantics debate and derailing the essential topic. Back to Beachum.
