'09 IL DE Craig Drummond (Ole Miss Signee)

Don't look now, but Dantonio might poised for a major coup. Illinois is "out" and Dantonio's in-home visit was "awesome" per Drummond's father in the Tribune:

Switching off Illini

Illinois, meanwhile, lost perhaps its second-best recruit when Morgan Park defensive end Craig Drummond decommitted.

Published reports had Drummond vacillating, but his father, Craig Sr., left little doubt Friday. "Illinois is out," he said by phone.

Drummond would not elaborate on the reasons, including whether there was an academic issue. Drummond said his son already has graduated from Morgan Park with a 2.5 grade-point average and he scored a solid 22 on his ACT.

Drummond plans to visit Ole Miss, but he hasn't written off the Big Ten. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio visited last week and made a terrific impression.

"Oh, man," Drummond Sr. said. "It was an awesome visit. I liked his sincerity and his passion."

If I had to bet, I would say MSU is his destination. In which case, Dantonio is establishing himself as a top recruiter in the midwest.

One of the knocks on Dantonio from Cinci and in general, was that he was only a so-so recruiter. As a fan, this development would be nice to see. In recruiting longevity is always the key. If MSU can continue to get a majority of the best out of Mich, grab several top 50 type guys out of OHIO like he has this year, each year, and get 2-3 difference makers from around the country(like a Drummond) each year; they could annually make themselves a factor at the top third of Big Ten standings. Time will tell.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Drummond had originally picked Illinois over Wisconsin, but was waivering on his choice.

Among others, Drummond was also offered by Miami-Florida, Tennessee, Ohio State, Southern California, Florida, Michigan State and Minnesota.

Drummond, who was an all-state and all-area selection as a junior after recording 22 sacks, did not play his senior season because of a foot injury.

Another source...

Morgan Park defensive end Craig Drummond is Mississippi-bound, apparently as soon as this week.
A family adviser for the former Illinois commitment -- rated the nation's No. 7 defensive end prospect by Rivals.com -- told RebelSports.net on Sunday night that Drummond had committed to Ole Miss after a weekend visit and will be enrolling as early as today.
He had planned to visit Michigan State early this week before making a decision, but adviser E.J. Jones said Drummond won't make that trip.
