'09 VA QB Chris Coyer (Temple Signee)

just from a numbers standpoint, seems like it is worth a scholly to add someone to play qb in a pinch.

I know Bauserman, played well in spring game etc., but he hasn't truly had any meaningful reps at qb since high school about 4-5 yrs ago.

I assume OJ is gonna rep on Defense in the spring (unless we don't sign a qb). and I thought the staff was pretty high on him there. If he has to prepare at QB it'll set him back at his ultimate destination

This guy Coyer seems like he can play.

I wonder if the head injury is why he's not higher up on people's boards.

I didn't understand how when Henton transferred they didn't look to go after somebody the next day. I don't understand how they can fill comfortable with just two scholarship QB's on the roster with your starter more of a runner than a thrower at the moment. If they are lookin at Coyer I'll take him. His profile seems legit.

Do you realize how hard it is to recruit during the season...let alone start a search for a position you never planned on recruiting very hard? Or how about the fact that most of the best talent has been recruited by other big name schools for up to a year previous before OSU would get a chance to first talk to them?

First you have to find a prospect out of 1000's by either info you gathered the summer before (in this case not a ton of QB info because they weren't going to need to recruit one) or a hearing about them or reading about them. (you know..ask other coaches...see a player while watching some one else's film...etc)

Then you have to contact the high school on order to obtain film on said recruit.

After viewing film...you have to a determination whether or not he would deserve a scholarship, you have to contact coaches, family members, friends, to find out what type of kid he is...

you have to make sure you meet the kid in person and talk to him to make sure he would fit the program...

And the whole time you need to make sure you are following recruiting rules and regulations, and continue to coach and look over the current players and get ready for the season...

OSU had one month to do this at the QB position before the season started, when game planning for each week started, before daily practice...etc

Recruiting is probably the most time consuming aspect of coaching. It isn't as simple as going on to Rivals or Scout and playing pick and choose

I've answered this a dozen times via PMs...my understanding is Payne is not even on the recruiting board so forget about him being an option. Terrence Owens has a better chance of getting an offer at this point, IMO. FWIW, Coyer does not have an offer but there has been contact...that is all we know at this point.

I cannot disagree with much of what is here, but there were strong indications in the months before Henton actually transferred that he was going to do so. I have to imagine that the staff knew this as well. Realistically, knowing that there was a fair possibility of Henton transferring, they would have had all summer to evaluate and recruit quarterbacks. The possibility of having just two scholarships on the roster for 2009 is too worrisome to chance it. They did a great job recruiting Boyd and were unlucky that Boucher wanted to go to school with his twin and had just switched his commitment to Miami. Coyer seems like a decent backup plan, and I assume there is probably at least one other guy they are thinking about offering as well. Still, I just cannot figure out why all the QB action at least seemed to come about towards the tail end of the season when it seemed to be an issue since at least early in the summer. Obviously the coaches aren't stupid, so there must have been a method behind all this, I'm just struggling trying to figure out what it was.

We were content to not recruit a QB because we weren't going after one all season. Then Boyd (kind of) falls in our lap, but we end up not getting him. Now we've decided we need a QB and go after Boucher and Coyer? It just doesn't add up to me.
83-19 adds up to me. I'll trust the coaches on this one.

That's the best way to look at the situation.

I understand offering Boyd, but then scrambling for back-up options a week before signing day, when the pickins are slim?
Well, Troy Smith, Brian Robiskie, Donald Washington, Curtis Terry, and Ohrian Johnson were all "back-up options a week before signing day", so the staff has had some success with very late offers.

Right on. Apparently, the staff has the luxury of a few extra schollies, and they can afford to take a chance on a kid at a position where they probably don't need him to develop for at least three years.

Ditto. Payne has never been an option for Ohio State, for a number of reasons.

It will be interesting to see if any prospects show up for official visits this weekend....

It totally makes sense... It sure would not be good if Pryor/Bauserman both went out with injury (Oregon anyone?), and a ill-prepared Orian Johnson has to take over with zero knowledge of our system. Now I don't know about any of you but it's very possible that it can happen with only two QB's. If one gets injured in the Spring (It happened with UCLA), and one in the Fall then there goes our season. Literally if we were to lose both our starters people will go all out on the run and while I love this 09' team more than anyone I can see 7-5 or 8-4 if we lose both our QB's. We're very very thin at QB and even if Pryor was the only one to get injured for instance that would IMO automatically get us two more losses.

Think Michigan's QB situation from last year (just not as awful). Besides we don't know ANYTHING about Bauserman. He hasn't taken a meaningful snap, and because of that we best try and sign someone. Waste of a scholarship? No not really. With James Jackson surprising us all by coming in early that free's up a scholarship. Better be safe than sorry here and target another QB.

Now if they move Orian Johnson in the spring then perhaps we can get away with the depth at QB, but if they decide to only go with two QB's then that's just asking for a disaster.

And a class-of-2009 commit does?

I think that just being around the offense and practicing against it you get a general idea of the system by osmosis. Grant Schwartz has been there for three years now, and as he is a former QB I wouldn't be surprised if he has had a peek or two at the playbook...plus he was a "mobile" QB in high school, so he could be plugged in the system in an emergency and hit the ground running.

Well that's why I think if Johnson Switches over this SPRING that yes we could be ok.

However if we wait till an injury for instance in mid 09' season to switch Johnson over then he will be a far cry away from being a threat at the QB position.

If we do sign someone in this class he will atleast have Fall practices under his belt. Where as if Orian was switched mid season he would have zero. Now of course if Johnson does indeed have Spring/Fall under his belt as a QB then of course he'd be a better option than a new recruit.

So I guess I'd say if Johnson moves ASAP to QB then i'm all for saving a scholarship this year. For sure I won't disagree even if we do take another QB regaurdless because again better be safe than sorry.

Article from Washington Post on Coyer sharing time at QB with Ryan Harris....

Oakton Quarterbacks Share the Wealth

Sitting on a bench at football practice earlier this week -- away from their parents, coaches, teammates, friends and recruiters -- Oakton senior quarterbacks Chris Coyer and Ryan Harris shared an uncomfortable smile as they recalled the August meeting when Cougars Coach Joe Thompson pulled them into his office.
They remembered how they felt when Thompson told them that he still couldn't make up his mind on a starter and that the two would share time, again.

More on Coyer, from the Washington Post...

Oakton's QBs Are Simply Too Much

Oakton Coach Joe Thompson has the kind of problem that will garner him more dirty looks than sympathy in the Virginia AAA Northern Region. He has two quarterbacks whom he would like to have on the field at all times, and only one spot to alternate between them.

Coyer, the starting quarterback, threw two touchdown passes to Watts. Harris, like Coyer a left-hander, tossed for a score and ran for another in gaining 64 yards on seven carries. Coyer and Harris also play other positions.
