'09 VA QB Chris Coyer (Temple Signee)

My son plays freshman basketball for Oakton High School and we attended all of the Oakton football games this year.

Chris is a solid kid. A very good runner and he seems to have a more than adequate arm. He does throw it a little nose down IMO. The neck fracture was a frightening instance but from what I understand he's recovering very well. He had planned to come back in mid-January to play basketball but I'm hearing that has been shelved. The Watts he was throwing to this season is Trey Watts, son of J.C. Watts who you old timers will remember at Oklahoma.

I had a conversation with his dad right as the Boyd recruiting saga began and his father told me at that time that Ohio State had contacted Chris.

Lastly, the CIA is in Langley, VA. The closest high school to the CIA is Langley HS and there are several high schools between Oakton and the CIA so there is no spook factor here. Oakton is one of the more affluent areas in Northern Virginia and the school is one of the stronger football schools in the northern region of Virginia.

Evan Royster at Penn State is from nearby Westfield High School which is one of Oakton's main rivals.

RE: The Oakton Fight Song. I can't sing it with "their" words when it's played. I guess I'm just stubborn about that one.

Temple fan here. Didn't see anything about Chris on Scout, but found this. From what we have gathered/heard/learned, tOSU offered Chris and told him to come visit the school, or some variation of 'come to campus, but make your decision there if you wish to attend'. Chris turned down the offer, and from everything we know he will be accepting his scholarship to TU. Even though tOSU is the big time program and all that, Chris appreciated our loyalty and the fact that we wanted him to begin with, and were not using him as a back up plan (I mean no disrespect, but that's what he was for you guys). Chris also has a chance to start right away. Anyway, he was an incredibly great get for our up and coming program, and all of us diehard Owls fans are very excited to have Chris at Temple.

Same feelings on the Boucher decision here. Good luck to Chris. Glad to see that recruits that aren't nearly as hyped as the guys that are 4* and 5*'s have so much integrity. Losing Coyer is a shame too, as I could see him possibly being a LeFevour type.

Just to clarify, Chris was not offered a scholarship by OSU but was offered a chance to visit to discuss an offer...

I highly doubt his father would lie...
Well, there's probably just some confusion concerning the nature of an "official offer". I'll trust Wade on this one, and assume that Coyer and his parents simply misinterpreted the nature of the so-called "offer" from Ohio State. It happens all the time, and it's nothing to get worked up about.

In any event, it looks like we'll get our guy (Kenneth Guiton, from Houston Eisenhower), and that you'll get your guy (Coyer), and that everybody will be happy come Signing Day.

Indeed, we both got our guys, and everyone is happy, but I just have to post this in regards to the 'well, maybe it wasn't an official offer' talk. This is from our Scout board:

"I live in Northern Va. Last night, I went to a very big girls basketball game last night and Coyer was there watching his sisters play. BTW, they are very good and their team is undefeated and ranked #4 in the Washing ton Post. I talked to Coyer personally and here's the straight deal.

OSU has been talking to him very regularly for a couple of months. He says that they were very honest with him that he was the next in line after Boyd. When Boyd committed to Clemson, they called him the next day. I asked Coyer if they offered. He said that the two coaches on the phone said, "I'm sure you're aware of what happened with Tajh. That's why we're calling. We'd like to offer you and get you up to Columbus this weekend so that Coach Tressel can do the official honors. But, we're going to need your answer while you're here."

He said that he really wanted to make a trip to OSU, but Boyd dragged it out too long. He said that Tajh wasn't going to OSU for the same reasons that Coyer wasn't really interested. Pryor is there for at least the next couple of years and the chances of Ohio State recruiting an in-state stud to leapfrog him during that period is very good. Although everyone would love to be in a program like that, the risks of not playing are great for anyone. The risks didn't outweigh the potential rewards in this case, and that no one wants to put in the kind of work required in a D-1 program and not play.

He loves the staff at Temple. He says the offensive system is a great fit for him. He is of the opinion that opportunity to play D-1 is more important than where you play D-1. The staff has more than convinced him that he will play at Temple. It is close to everything important to him. Temple is a good school in his eyes. Overall, he believes that Temple is the right fit for him, and that he has a better chance of accomplishing his personal goals at Temple than anywhere else, including OSU."

After Boyd's Clemson commit I was wondering if the staff's preferred approach was to go to '10, go with only Devontae Payne or go with others not previously in the mix.

Interesting development here, anyone have any inkling why: Curious has been a lack of interest from Virginia and Virginia Tech as both schools continue to court other quarterbacks.
This is probably way outdated since Coyer's sticking with Temple and you guys have Guiton now, but UVA picked up two quarterbacks (higher-rated, too) for this class very early in the process. There was no need to offer Coyer after that.

And that's the key - Ohio State doesn't officially offer any kid who does not first visit the campus in some fashion - junior day, summer camp, official visit. If Coyer had visited this weekend, then they would have given him the "official offer" (assuming that everything went alright on the trip - no red flags and that sort of thing). When Coyer said, "no thanks", then Ohio State moved on to Guiton, who did agree to visit, and will (presumably) receive his official offer this weekend. Some schools probably don't follow such an elaborate procedure, but Ohio State does.

So has Guiton visited? Also, we can get into semantics, but the point is that tOSU wasn't wavering--the offer was there for the taking, and he didn't take it. I'm not looking to get into a shouting match over it, but there's a lot of shady business going on between Rivals and Scout--changing headlines, unchecking Coyer's offer from tOSU, checking it, then unchecking it again. Makes you wonder if someone from tOSU didn't want people to know/see that a recruit picked lowly Temple--a MAC school and non-BCS school no less, and a school whose team was the laughing stock of the NCAA just a few short years ago, over the prestigious The Ohio State University. Hmmm...

You won't want me around when I tell you I've been a Gators fan since I was little :tongue2: :wink2:

You're safe from Chaney. He's too busy golfing and rambling about whatever to worry about college football.

Right, because there's NEVER any inconsistency with recruiting profiles and the accuracy of whether they've been offered :roll2:

Save your conspiracy complex. OSU just publically offered Austin Boucher, so that blows up your whole theory.
