'13 OH PF Devin Williams (West Virginia Verbal)

In spite of the silence around Williams recruiting I think this is OSU's best shot at a true 4/5 in this class.

Hoping Matta can lock this kid up and focus on one final "elite" top 50 recruit for 2013.

Has Devin grown any taller than the initial post indicates b/c if he is 6'6'' how can he be considered a true 4/5?

Edit: Rivals lists him as 6'8'' which is closer to a 4/5 for Matta.

After Williams officially visits Ohio State this weekend, Angela Williams said, the family will sit down and make a decision in time for the early signing period.

"It's decision time," she said. "He's just absorbing each visit, because he's the one that has to feel comfortable. I'm gonna be there, obviously, and I'm gonna have my input, but he's the one that has to go to the school."

I think this is a big one for OSU. Landing Williams give the Bucks 3 players at positions of need and all top 100 talent. Again, that allows Matta to focus his efforts on 1 or 2 final elite kids. All of which is really icing on the cake at this point.

I fear Anya to IU and Vonleh to Cuse but anything can happen.

I've never seen him listed under 6'8, and some even list him as 6'9. I don't know where the 6'6 came from but it is plain wrong. He is more of a post than a F right now. I'd call him a 5 who could eventually play some 4 in time at the next level. He is more comfortable on the low block than anywhere else at present.

I have not stood next to this kid but all reports have him closer to 6'8 than 6'6. If so, that puts him in the same range as a Terrence Dials.

S&GFAN,
I think Devin is in the 75-100 range on most scout's lists because he is a bit lacking athletically. Like Jared he will not jump out of the gym anytime soon. Which limits his upside at the next level some I think. He is pretty strong and reasonably crafty inside - not Jared strong or Jared IQ or hands or feet but relatively speaking he is stronger than most frosh are coming into college. I think he will help more than many higher rated players will as a frosh - because of that strength advantage. But he may top out quickly at the college level because he doesn't have hops or as much potential as many others on the scout lists ahead. They rank on potential - just as the NBA drafts - and that is not always what coaches care about or look for primarily. I think Devin will produce as a frosh, he just may not produce that much more as a JR or SR than he does next year. Which is fine by me.

Agree for the most part. He reminds me of Terrence Dials for some reason. Maybe it is build and similar athletic ability but if he can produce like Dials it would be a huge addition. Obviously that is a big "if" at this point.

Build wise and being inside-centric I'd agree that TD is a comparison. He was highly underrated coming out of h.s. due to several knee operations, particularly one that limited him as a SR. So he was even lower-rated than Devin is by most back then.

But the one thing that TD and Sully both had, that few big men do, is GREAT HANDSand GREAT FOOTWORK. Soft in catching ability yet strong in finishing and powering through fouls and bumps/bangs. Both also had great footwork that assisted them in getting advantages over most others inside. They both were in the TOP 2% as far as hand/eye for BIGs, to go along with great strength and power bodies.

I don't know that Devin has great hands. They appear rather mediocre from what I've seen of him. He has the strength to overcome his height inside, but I am not sure he has the hands or feet that TD and Sully had - that set them both apart from the masses. That is what would make the difference between him being a good college player and a great one. We'll see eventually.

This is 1 recruitment where it wouldnt surprise me at all if he went anywhere but OSU. Does anyone have a feel for how this will play out?

I feel like it's trending towards Ohio State. Originally he seemed like a UCLA lean, and then coincidentally or not, once OSU got involved heavier, they seemed to disappear from the list. Now you're competing against WVU and Memphis, who certainly aren't Kentucky or Duke. I think he may have been "perturbed" by being offered somewhat later by OSU, but it's an offer he wanted. Looks like the staff has turned the heat up speaking with Devin daily, and with Mom coming on the visit, and being an Ohio kid... I'd personally be surprised if he isn't a Buckeye by next week.

EDIT: Just read that an insider on scout feels that OSU is slightly behind one team.. but hopefully the Jent/Matta/Paulus/Boals and Dickerson combo can close this weekend.

It has been a strange saga. He reportedly was all UCLA and Xavier, with us a distant 3rd. Then he eliminates UCLA because they are too far away and Xavier because they are too close to where he grew up.

Sounds like it may come down to WV or us now as close enough for his family to attend games but not so close he feels like he is living at home again.

I'd also guess that if he and his mom like what they see this weekend he will pick us.

The only thing that I question is if his grades are really in order. WV seems to be a bit like MSU in FB, when they contend for a kid you have to wonder if grades are an issue. They already have Macon in this class - for instance. I'd also read somewhere that grades were one reason Matta delayed offering him until this summer. And that the xfer to the Prep School was to raise his grades more than anything else.
