2004 Spring Practice (official thread)

* DT -- Quinn Pitcock (G), Sian Cotton (S), Brandon Maupin (G), Derek Coker (S), Caesar Buie (G), Joel Penton (S).
What's the deal w/ Penton? I had heard some good things about him a while back. Is he just not progressing, is he dinged up, do his teammates not like him, or what? I find it odd that he was picked behind two guys I've never heard of.

He is not playing due to injury. Listing him was just a formality.

On the O-Z today, there was a quote attributed to Tressel about "Hiley and Guilford are not playing due to OSU policy but should be back in the fall". I'm sure this would be grades, but has anyone seen this quote or can verify it?

Never mind, this is on Bnuts.

I'm not usually one to say "I told you so" but I DID predict that Underwood would be the first player picked overall. Do I know my football or what? (From all I have heard this spring I would never have guessed he would go after Youboty.)

IMO very pleasant surprise to see Irizarry go so high and ahead of Hamby.

Also a surprise to see Schlegel go so low. What kind of statement is that relative to Kerr?

I doubt it's much of any. If there are only 2 MLBs, and they both are good, you know you're going to get a good one either way, so why waste your pick on opening a position you're not going to gain a big advantage from. Although I guess you can conclude that Schlegel is not Andy Katzenmoyer from this.

Man I am excited and can't wait to get up to Columbus tomorrow morning!

Dennis will not be up with me. Saturday is Senior Day at Disney World, where all the Seniors go up with their class. He wanted to come up, but I told him that he should enjoy his last few days of school and his HS friends. I will have his Mom with me,Thomas Matthews parents, Nate Salley's parents and others. It will be a great time.

I will try to come by Susan's Tailgate party before the game. After the game and before, we will be in our normal spot, and would like to invite everyone over. We are right at the start of the sidewalk (Translated, Pharmacy Parking lot/sidewalk) that goes between Lincoln and Morril and cuts through Buckeye Grove (The one with trees, not the Cyber one). We are generally the first couple of tables that are set up along the sidewalk.

Also, there is a players BBQ party over at the Hayes after the game. I think they are charging $10 to get in, (NCAA won't let them give it away free) They may be looking for family passes, but I will talk to the guy at the Field Fence and tell him that anyone who says Helping Hand is with me, and should be allowed in.

I look forward to seeing everyone,

HH

The players drafted the players they liked, the order in which they were drafted has no bearing on their ability, the seniors got together and made the picks, to say because so and so got picked before Joe Blow means something, is just plain stupid. Just my opinion.:osu:

The order in which they were picked does have some bearing. There's a reason why receivers were the first position picked over tight ends, or guards. The point was since there was only two MLB there was no reason to open that position since you would be getting a good mlb no matter which one you picked.

But the general philosohpy of the draft is that the first positions picked are those in which the greatest disparity between players exists. Holmes going first implies (underline implies) that the players thought the difference between Holmes and Hall gave them a bigger advantage than the difference between say, Kudla and Frost.

All spring everyone has been raving about Schlegel, many saying he would be the first drafted. That his position was last implies that the competition between he and Kerr is much closer than we were thinking. The implication is that there is a greater advantage gained by having Datish over Tyree than there is by having Schlegel over Kerr.

Of course, that is all in the context of an advantage gained in a single game. Speculation is that the reason Smith was picked ahead of Zwick is that a scrambling QB is a bigger advantage in a game in which an inexperienced OL has been split between two teams. (There may not be much of a pocket for a pocket passer to operate from.)
