2011 SEC Football Discussion

Didn't realize that (obviously). My guess is the new rankings will look like this:

1. LSU
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma St.
4. Arkansas
5. Who the heck knows

The crux of my scenario still holds if LSU and Alabama win out. Georgia beating LSU in the SEC CCG would probably only drop LSU to 2, depending on how harsh the human polls are on LSU.

Oklahoma St. lost and I think voters will hit them hard for a loss to an unranked Iowa State team. Too bad, because it was a tough day for them.

I think Stanford might get back into top 5 now.

I posted this in the Baylor/Oklahoma thread but deserves to be here instead...

With all the upsets that happened, LSU, Alabama and Arkansas will be 1-2-3 in the BCS. Here's an awesome scenario... all 3 win out, LSU plays Georgia in the SEC CG. Georgia somehow beats LSU. LSU most likely won't fall further than #3 in the BCS. So you have Alabama 1, Arky/LSU 2/3... but Georgia is guaranteed a spot in the BCS because they won the conference. What the hell does the BCS do in that case?

#1 and #2 go to the BCS Title game. That takes precedence over anything else. If UGA wins the SEC CCG, and two other SEC teams end up 1-2 in the BCS, the SEC would actually get 3 teams in the BCS.

There's normally a limit of 2 teams per conference, but that limit dosn't apply in this case - they clarified it a couple of years ago when the Big XII looked like it could have ended up in the same scenario.

But Arkansas plays at LSU after Thanksgiving. If Arkansas wins, and if Bama wins the Iron Bowl, the SEC West will have a 3-way tie where each team beat the other one. The tiebreaker goes to the head-to-head between the top 2 teams in the BCS, assuming they're within 5 spots, which they surely would be.

In the event of the SEC West 3-way tie:
If Bama is the lowest BCS ranked of the 3, Arkansas would get the SEC CCG.
If Ark is the lowest BCS ranked of the 3, LSU would get the SEC CCG,
If LSU is the lowest BCS ranked of the 3, Bama would get the SEC CCG.

I think most of the computers would have LSU still at #1, even if they lose to Arkansas. But losing late usually hurts in the human polls.

SEC vs SEC in a national title game will cause quite a stir and may be the beginning of the end of the BCS. Or at least we can only hope:P
Problem is ... I honestly believe that Alabama and LSU are the two best teams in the country this year. As ugly and unwatchable as 'game one' was, I've got no problems with a rematch. I thought Alabama showed themselves to be the all-around better team in the first game, they just missed a shit-load of FGs.

I agree that LSU and Bama are the two best teams in the country. However, how unfair would it be to LSU if they run the table and lose to Bama in the national championship? LSU would be 13-1 and Bama 12-1. The only loses are to each other. Bama didn't even win their conference yet they have a national championship. Of course Arkansas can blow this thing open if they beat LSU.

How is that different from the NFL where you could have a rematch? I guess I dont get all the angst over a rematch considering most folks tend to want a playoff system...which could certainly offer rematches. The BCS is essentially a one game playoff so if the two best teams have already played, so be it.

Meanwhile, SEC West has the Top 3 teams in the country. Wow. And if Arkansas wins on Friday, they probably deserve a shot at the BCS.

I would like to see Arkansas beat LSU. Then who ever comes out of the WEST lose to Georgia in the SEC championship. That would create such a mess which I'm all for.

If I'm understanding things right (I'm probably not), if Arkansas can manage a win in Baton Rouge Friday, it will put Arkansas in the #2 slot.

Alabama would then go to the SEC-CG and Arkansas would be assured of a place in the BSC-CG regardless of the outcome of the Alabama v Georgia SEC-CG.

If Georgia wins, it would likely be LSU, OK State or perhaps Stanford in the BCS-CG.

If Alabama wins, it would likely be a Hog v Gump rematch.

Crazy.

I'm not sure you're going to get a rematch of a 38-14 loss. Honestly, it's not one I'd tune in to see. If Arkansas had shown up the first time you'd have a chance. IMHO.

It doesn't really matter what anyone wants to see, if the Hogs are ranked #2 at the end of the season, they're in. It's as simple as that.

And the Razorbacks (hypothetically) beating #1 LSU in Baton Rouge should put them there.

Of course, the voters could think "no rematches" and vote accordingly, but that would be openly dishonest and blatantly manipulative of the BCS process.

I still stick by my thought that if a team does not win their own conference (let alone own division) they have no business playing for the national title

I kind of think the pollsters think the same way after the Nebraska debacle in 2001
