Arizona makes offer to Chandler's Hemmila
Wolves OL also has offers from Arizona State, Oregon State.

The University of Arizona continues to build ties in Arizona State's prime recruiting ground.

The Wildcats made an offer this week to Chandler two-way lineman Zack Hemmila (6 feet-3, 280 pounds), a junior who figures to garner more interest on the offensive side of the ball as a tackle or guard.

"He's really a unique kid," Chandler coach Jim Ewan said of his best lineman. "He doesn't get as much time in the weight room in the spring as I'd like because he plays defense on our lacrosse team. But the plus in that is that he's in great shape and runs really well for a big kid."

Not that Hemmila lacks strength. Ewan said his body was a little soft when he started as a sophomore but "it's really starting to change. If he grows another inch or so I think colleges will put him at tackle because of his quick footwork and his ability to pick up guys off the edge."

Hemmila also has offers from Arizona State and Oregon State, where he attended a camp this summer.

"His dream school is Ohio State because he was born and raised in Ohio," Ewan said. "But Ohio State doesn't usually get this far out in its recruiting and I'm hoping to push him to stay in-state. We've got to start having the best kids stay in Arizona."

Humphries becoming a top-of-the-line player
Mallard Creek lineman has emerged as one of area's best junior prospects

Mallard Creek offensive lineman D.J. Humphries has gone from one college football offer to more than 20 after attending a Virginia Tech football camp. "I was getting some interest before," Humphries said, "but after I did that camp, it just went to a different level." JEFF SINER - [email protected]

In May, Mallard Creek offensive lineman D.J. Humphries attended a football camp at Virginia Tech and his life changed.

Humphries, who is 6 feet 6 inches and 280 pounds, was named the top offensive lineman at a camp that featured a strong field of top college prospects.

ESPN's recruiting website wrote that Humphries was one of the more advanced high school offensive linemen seen last summer at any grade and said he could be the nation's top offensive tackle recruit in the class of 2012.

Rivals.com national analyst Mike Farrell agrees with that assessment, comparing Humphries to Xavier Nixon, a former Fayetteville Britt top 100 national recruit now playing at Florida.

"The Mallard Creek kid is a no-brainer," Farrell said. "He's really, really good. He reminds me a little of Xavier Nixon because he's tall, athletic and really hasn't filled out yet. Once he does, he's going to become something special."

Today, the Observer releases its list of the top five junior recruits in North and South Carolina, and Humphries heads the list in his home state. In fact, after speaking with recruiting analysts and coaches, it appears four of the top five are from the immediate Charlotte area: Humphries, Indian Trail Sun Valley receiver Jody Fuller, Berry running back Germone Hopper and Berry linebacker Nick Dawson.

All are getting used to the heavy recruiting attention they're receiving. For Humphries, he's gone from one offer - from Clemson - to more than 20 after attending the Virginia Tech camp.

He said that list of schools includes Clemson, Florida State, Louisiana State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Look Ahead: Huge game in Maryland

Analyst: Mike Farrell

Game: Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic at Olney (Md.) Good Counsel, Friday

Stefon Diggs Good Counsel, 6-0/160, ATH, 2012 prospect

Diggs is easily the most explosive athlete on the Good Counsel team and possibly in the game, but will he get enough touches to make a difference. How will he deal with double teams and being keyed on by the DeMatha secondary and linebackers?

Mike Madaras Good Counsel, 6-6/270, OL, 2012 prospect

Madaras already has offers from Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Pitt, Rutgers, Stanford and West Virginia. Is he a legit 6-foot-6 and how much of his frame is filled out? How will he fare against a very talented and athletic DeMatha defensive line loaded with future D-I players?

After seeing Dixie Heights quarterback Zeke Pike play again Friday night, I’m convinced that no local player is as important to his team. I know he’s nowhere near a finished product and he’s struggled at times while learning to play varsity quarterback against a tough schedule, but there’s no doubt the kid is a special talent. If I had to pick the 10 most impressive plays I’ve seen this season, I think four of them were made by Pike. Against NewCath he avoided what looked like a certain sack and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass on fourth down. Against Simon Kenton he hurdled the line of scrimmage and blocked an extra point. Later against SK he got out in front of tailback Seth Bruns and threw three perfect downfield blocks. Last week against Highlands he rolled to his right and threw a bullet, an absolute Aroldis Chapman strike, to Goose Cohorn in the side of the endzone for a touchdown. The other stuff should come. If it doesn’t, college coaches still are going to be blown away by his tape. Northern Kentucky, enjoy watching. We probably haven’t seen a talent like this since Jared Lorenzen was shrugging off defensive linemen and throwing 80-yard touchdown passes.
