2016 tOSU Really Basic Defense Discussion

I don't know what defense you guys were watching last night. FIRE FICKLE!!!!! They took a step back last night. They only scored one TD. According to the growth chart, it should have been 3!

Might as well get rid of Shiano too. What a pathetic job he has done in the first three games. HA!

Might be the best Defense in CFB. It IS basic though. Basically awesome that is. The speed, quickness, physicality, and athleticism is off the charts. To think that it is also so young only brings a smile to my face.

Sparty and Wisky are the two teams I wonder about having the type of personnel who can maybe still maul this interior DL (to whatever degree). After last night I am confident in saying that any team who struggles with a quick DL is in a world of hurt against this team.

IU and, I guess, Nebraska are the teams left that resemble the 3 teams we have already seen OSU defend very well. The OL from tsun is the same as it was last year (I will leave it at that). Penn State is in a lot of trouble, I don't care where the game is played or when.
BUT IT'S A NIGHT GAME!!!! THEY'LL BE IN WHIIIIIIIIITE!

The best offense is a really good defense.

If I am reading/understanding my statistics correctly, the tOSU defense is "basically" scoring more points per game than they are giving up.

They seem to be scoring 9.3 ppg and giving up 7.7

That is one way to win games.

Possibly their average margin of "victory" of 1.6 ppg would go up if they got credit for the "automatic" extra point.

Defensive Line looks like it will be better than last year

Not to piss on our campfire, but while our defense has been pretty damn good overall, it's not world-class...yet. I've watched the OU game three times now, and they actually moved the ball very well on at least four drives. They doinked a short FG (not on their offense), and should've had a TD instead of a FG in the first half (their fourth or fifth drive), where the WR tripped inside in five and a few plays later a WR dropped a slant near the goal line (where he subsequently got blown up). The also had over 250 yards of offense in the first half and over 400 yards for the game. While we weren't in any danger of losing the game, they could've easily ended up with 31 points (24 of which were by offense).

Meyer himself said during the on-field post-game interview that they still need work...

This is true. I feel that defenses generally take time to gel though, just like O-lines - they should continue to improve. Plus, this was Oklahoma, not Bowling Green or Tulsa, so I didn't expect them to totally shut them out.

Same thing I said when we were on the wrong end of one of these vs UF in '06; you are never as good or bad as you look in a blowout game.

OU's offense moved the ball, they just didn't make the key plays (as a team, not just on offense). Pretty much the story of their loss to Houston.

The only spot I could say that OU clearly has a talent issue is in the defensive backfield. The rest of the team might not be NC caliber but it isn't like they didn't belong on the same field with OSU.

I'm sure they have plenty of defensive talent, but that unit did not belong on the same field with OSU's offense schematically, physically, athletically or mentally.

They were wildly outclassed.

In their defense, there are not many offenses like this one. Lots of monstrous offenses, lots of speed spread offenses, but almost no one (if anyone ) has the blend.
