2016 tOSU Really Basic Defense Discussion

Heard an interesting comment from an ESPN talking head about what OU's backup QB said. He said that it was unlikely that it was an original thought. In other words, it was likely something he has been hearing from his coaches or team leaders. If that is the case - that OU's coaches and starters think that the defensive packages (which have been basic) displayed against BG and Tulsa are the same ones they'll see - I like our defense to have a big game.
If we just go plain Jane and get slaughtered yeah that'll be really disheartening... However I wouldn't be surprised if we don't do much different because Oklahoma likes to go up tempo like our first two opponents.

What people don't account for is you have to be able to beat your man to make plays and our guys are just better then 90% of the teams.

Also going to get this off my chest... everyone says the first two teams dropped a ton of balls and I agree but I feel it's because of how close/physical our back 7 play

I agree. One or two drops is just fortunate, but what we've seen the first two games looks to me like we're in receivers' heads. They're anxious and lose focus and that only increases our DBs' confidence.

This defense played great tonight. To quote Marlo Stanfield (The Wire reference), "they have big paws on a puppy". The kids played like some hungry wolves that haven't been fed in weeks. Kudos to the D coaching staff and especially Coach Schiano for not missing a beat after Ash left. The DBs are IMO the strength of the defense

Oh yeah, and #basicdefense

Couple worries from last night:

-Getting lost on misdirections and reads. Young guys didn't maintain their assignments a few times. Young, aggressive, Urban Meyer defense. It happens.
-Damon Webb has to be better. He has gotten picked on last year and this year.
-Interior D-line worried me, but that is quickly fading. It's going to keep getting better too.

Otherwise, in this day in age where we've moved the goalposts on what is a "good" defense, these guys are elite. Just cannot believe the talent these young kids have. 2 TDs and 4 FGs given up through 3 games against high-powered offenses. Plus, the opportunistic playmakers in the secondary? These guys get their hands on the ball and don't mess around. I mean, they've scored more as a D than they've given up, right?

Ballers.

It's not just picks with the DBs, they're laying some hits and are definitely getting in receivers' heads (OU's TE is still looking over his shoulder), but without making the stupid tackle whiffs that we saw before Ash. I saw some impressive open field tackles last night. Great, great cooperation between the front and back of the defense.

I agree with all of this, but see the defense growing and getting even better as the season goes on. After watching that Oklahoma game last night I'm not nearly as worried about teams like PSU and Wisky who aren't balanced enough to pose serious threats. I can't stop bragging about the DBs and how good they're turned out. I'm sure B1G coaches are sweating right now. I honestly see OSU as having one of the most balanced defenses in CFB, especially after seeing Bama play Ole Miss

Sparty and Wisky are the two teams I wonder about having the type of personnel who can maybe still maul this interior DL (to whatever degree). After last night I am confident in saying that any team who struggles with a quick DL is in a world of hurt against this team.

IU and, I guess, Nebraska are the teams left that resemble the 3 teams we have already seen OSU defend very well. The OL from tsun is the same as it was last year (I will leave it at that). Penn State is in a lot of trouble, I don't care where the game is played or when.
