2016 tOSU Really Basic Defense Discussion

I don't see the past as that relevant.

I mean, I scored 4 points last night (well, she may have been a 6 or even a 7 if you like gingers), but it is not indicative of what I will wind up with tonight.

When a guy consistently brings home 9's and 10's but ends the night with a 2 or 3...you'll wonder what happened. If you consistently have 4's, that's not a big deal.

There are quite a few candidates, depending on how you define the question. Another is the 2011 game at Nebraska. OSU was up big, then in the final quarter or quarter-and-a-half, Burkhead and Martinez ran all over the Buckeye D.
The main problem in that game was that Brax's replacement was Joe "T-shirt Cannon" Bauserman. I don't think we got a single first down after Brax went out, and the defense just got gassed.

BGSU dropped a lot of passes and missed some open receivers, so that in part accounted for their only scoring three offensive points. The weather was a big factor in holding Tulsa to three offensive points, also, but the defense really did clamp down on Tulsa's run game in the second half.

I don't know much about Tulsa, but BGSU replaced a lot, including their QB and Coach. I don't find past statistics meaningful for them.

I do find them meaningful. Did Ohio State not replace a lot as well, including their defensive (more specifically defensive secondary) coach? Why did average QB's often look like world beaters against Ohio State the last few years? That didn't happen the first two weeks. Tulsa's QB just posted the 2nd best passing season in school history last year. Programs that have been defined by their high scoring offenses for years, regardless of who is at the helm, as evidenced by their offensive rankings over the last few years were just shut down.

I get what you are saying. But Ohio State has the luxury of replacing personnel, players or coaches, with similar top notch people. BGSU is much more likely to get a flash in the pan guy or coach, then nothing, then somebody awesome again, etc.

You don't think the offense's complete inability to even muster a first down once Braxton got injured had anything to do with it? Our run defense looked pretty good when the O was able to move the ball and keep them fresh.

How soon we forget Michigan State last year and two years ago. And what about all the rushing and passing yards put on the Bucks by the Hoosiers.
2015 had more to do with the fact that the offense could only produce 5 first downs to Sparty's 17 culminating in the worst offensive game of Urban Meyer's career. 2013 was the result of one of the worst Ohio State secondaries of all time letting a passing offense ranked in the 100s throw for 300 yards.

How many of those games did Indiana win?

Like I said, I'll worry about run defense when it becomes the sole reason we start losing games like that terrible secondary.

2013 also stopped feeding the beat (Carlos Hyde) who was shredding the Sparty defense until he simply stopped getting carries.

Wouldn't mind seeing Baker get some more PT over Worley but I think we'll see a good amount of LB's rotated in this Saturday....you'd have to imagine OU will go physical and pound the run but Big Game Bob might out think himself again....

I thought Baker looked fantastic... Im fact on pass downs I'd love to go to 3-4 and remove a DT to bring in Baker once Booker comes back.

Imagine
DE-Hubbard
DT-Holmes/Bosa
DE-Lewis
OLB-Worley
ILB- Raekwon
ILB-Booker
OLB- Baker

Baker and Worley coming from a wider angle would really create problems for a team. I know they like Arnette but this formation would give us a bit more size.

Baker started last week in place of Booker. Is Booker back this week?

He was listed on the chart this week and I think expectation is he'll be back in the starting lineup.

I like Baker over Worley as I think he has better instincts, kid has a great feel for the game, seems to be a 'gamer', and I think in the big game surroundings with a QB like Mayfield that'd be a nice curveball to have for them. Worley is definitely solid but Baker is special to me.

That's good to hear about Booker. I haven't seen enough of either to prefer one over the other. Guess I'll just have to begrudgingly trust the coaches on this one.
